Yep, it's the 1.6 THP petrol. And with oil burning issues as you'd correctly guessed.

Unfortunately it wasn't changed under warranty afaik, not sure of the exact reason why, could've also just been us being ignorant about it. But the warranty was over when we started running into issues iirc, and the quotations for the engine rehaul were so exorbitant we decided not to go ahead with it.

    Thanks again!

To be pedantic, it was not an official recall. PSA replaced it with an updated unit under warranty IF you were to face the issue within the warranty period. The issue was discovered by owners after crossing about 50k - 60k kilometers.

That's the sad part as there were many owners who didn't do that mileage within the warranty period.

It was a BMW-PSA joint venture project from 2006. The engine did have a recall for a timing chain and tensioner issue (both parts were designed by BMW, they had issues with Timing chains in their diesels and other petrol engines as well from that era, most famous was the N47).

The engine was a good design; lightweight, compact, had good low down torque, made good power, smooth and economical for the power outputs it offered in various tunes. On the RCZ-R, It was tuned for 270hp and it had the highest HP per Litre ratio of any production car, until the Yaris GR came along about 5 years later.

The main flaw being that the piston rings were fragile in the earlier years and gave way very quickly. Similar issue to what the Honda Fit GP1s faced. They resolved the issue with better quality rings on the later THP engines.

How bad is the oil burn in yours? Does it drink more than 1L per 2500km or so? Lot of white smoke? Rough running and noise?

Might as well call it a baby Type R. Good find man and wishing you many happy miles! That manual with that high revving 1.8 must be such a joy.

The FD platform was so good, they sold them as an Acura in North America. All the car you need.

@fiat fan agreed and remember, a doctor hopes you fall sick, a mechanic hopes your car breaks, while only a crook wishes you prosperity! 🤣

I have a Bajaj Discover 100 (5 Gear) model manufactured in 2011. I bought it about a year and a half ago and it was doing about 50kmpl. But now the fuel consumption is around 35-40kmpl and hill climbing performance is significantly reduced. black smoke is coming while accelerating at idle position. It was a lot in the beginning, but now it is less due to a recent carburetor adjustment. Also, I heard this model should perform an average of 65kmpl.

Since I did the carburetor cleaning and adjustment, what could be the other possible reasons for reducing fuel consumption?

How many kms on the engine? You may need to go for a rebuild if you are seeing signs like white smoke, Hard start, oil burning etc.

Like the above comment said, checking the sparks are a start.

You might be better off replacing that carburetor as well next time since the Discover/Platina 100 carbs are not too expensive. With lankan fuel quality, you need to be cleaning them more frequently depending on usage.

Almost half a year later - bumping this thread up. Just curious on the thoughts of the community of this forum - who are few of the last sane people left in this cuckoo-land.

Has anything actually changed in Sri Lanka?

    Bump (2)

Alot of my friends have left lanka in the last 2 years... alot. Even my own family is away for a while. So its a bit lonely at times but I'm content with the life and people here considering I was exposed to the foreign life for 12 years, so I was fortunate to have a slice of perspective as to what the other side holds. Its a lovely country and it is home.

Sure, alot of things are still way behind global standards but its manageable for the most part.

The current obvious issue is with the whole recovering economy, you just lose your drive, your enthusiasm. As if there is no end in sight to your turmoil and hard work.

All one could do is bear, work and hope towards a better future. Or leave in hopes of a better future elsewhere. But the home-sickness will always persist.

What does the owner's manual say? If it says 95 Octane is mandatory and any lower would damage the engine I wouldn't pump 92RON.

I have a Mitsubishi Lancer, the owners manual recommends 95RON but states gasoline with an octane rating above 90RON is compatible because the car has a knock control system (almost all modern vehicles have this system afaik) and pumping 90RON or above would not damage the engine.

    gI5EUd3.png

If there is no audible knocking sound from the engine after pumping 92 I think it would stand to reason that the knock control system is capable of adapting the engine to 92RON. For example, fellow forum member @misnad tried pumping 92RON to his Civic and had to revert back to 95RON because the engine started audibly knocking despite the knock control system

If you have an ELM327 OBD scanner you can see how much your knock control system is retarding the engine timing to compensate for lower octane fuel. Compare the readings between 92RON and 95RON and if there is not much of a difference it would be safe to assume that switching to 92RON wouldn't be an issue long-term

What app/software did you use? I have ELM327 and the 406 doesnt seem too happy with 92. Need to get a reading.

I have never found a permanent solution for my Vezel.
All I get is conflicting info and no one is guaranteeing a fix.

So I survive with it, until It completely dies for a new gearbox I guess.
There is constant loss of power and acceleration is horrible. Gear change is sometimes slow, but I am used to it now.
If you ever get a solution, hit me up https://t.me/cobham

How is the Honda dealership in Kenya? Also like iRage said, its down to those 2 issues only 99% of the time. You just gotta find a reliable mechanic who can open up that gearbox properly.

Due to some reasons, I need to buy a car within 4 million to 5 million budget. I want this car to be sold within 1 year and buy another one. So it should have good 2nd market value.

I work from home. So I don’t drive cars everyday. Only for short rides. Is it true Hybrid cars are not suitable for this use case? If yes, please suggest me some car options

    Thanks

Get an old 2013 Nissan leaf if its strictly for short rides. Nothing wrong with hybrids. Hybrids have issues if you dont drive them for too long, just like most cars.

If you must burn 5 mil:

Fit GP1, Picanto, Perodua Axia, WagonR, Vitz, Swift beetle are some easy choices to buy, use and sell these days.

These are some good options - the P11 would cost a lot less than your budget - you'll have plenty of spare cash to do any mods or if any repairs come up.

Even I am curious, on paper the Primera is a good car. Why does it have a resale value lesser than some rare euros even. You're getting a 2L spacious sedan with a nice rev friendly engine, manual, Independant suspension, power everything and Sunroof.

  10. Avoid Evo and imprezas cause you might get caught with a botched or abused car. Sometimes without updated book even. Maintenance isn't gonna be cheap just because it's a mitsu/subie.

Avoid B4 unless you are willing to have patience to maintain and feed it fuel. They drink alot. Heavy cars with the old inefficient EJ motor. Can have vacuum and turbo issues too. Otherwise its a nice car.

Try EK3 Vi-RS, Civic FD1 (1.8L), Carina GT, Mazda 3 (BK5P), Copen, S660, Primera P11 with 2.0L (SR20) and Starlet GTs. Very economical and fun to drive choices.

406 is a great driver, you can't get a jap with that mix of comfort and tight handling in that budget. Peugeot has their own handling dynamics game.

But drive one and see how you like it, you need to be up on your maintenance game, considering it's a 20+ year old European in our Lankan environment.  Parts and mechanics aren't as common as for jap models. The wiring and plastics are quite fragile for our climate. Doesn't help that the French make cars with their own weird rules so you will see so many things that are different from regular jap/German cars.

Volvo S60 is a nice left field choice, provided you can find a T5 with the 240hp 2.3 Turbo (if we even have any around) but it also falls into the same scenario as 406 in terms of maintenance.

Another left field choice is the X chassis cars (Cressida, Chasers, Mark IIs). Mostly luxo barges but decent driving dynamics I have heard.

There are other nice to drive euros in your budget such as B5 Passat/A4s and E36s. Problem is, I don't easily recommend euros to other people unless the person asking my advice is mental and into old euros as well. Masochists really.

Don't fear high mileage. We once had a 406 with 330,000km.

I'd rather have a well maintained high mileage car than a neglected low mileage one. A car sitting for too long can have problems too.

All the above cars are readily available in manual too. Like @matroska said, nice to see more people wanting manuals.

Seems like its harder than I thought it would be....here is a hint: "the company that makes this is more popular for manufacturing a car named after an insect" :)

    <literally giving the answer there>

Was gonna say Karmann Ghia but that's not it. Damn this a good one.

Where can i find Carina 192 Petrol/Manual(1995) car ECU? Thanks

It would be helpful if you mentioned where you are from or which city/town is closest to you. AT190 series parts shouldn't be hard to find, check with any recondition jap parts stores.

Wow, this is some awesome stuff for me as well, as I am trying to buy my 1st Peugeot, being a previous Toyota and Honda user. I am also with kind of the same budget. 2 Mn

@AVANTE from the info what I have gathered by speaking to few people L6A is a 8 valve engine with 89 HP, Where as LFY - 110 HP, EW7 - 114 HP & EW10 - 139 HP. in that case L6A seems little underpowered for a car like 406???

This is what I have heard and by any means I am not an expert and you are more than welcome to correct me if I am wrong.

Correct. It's underpowered, and burns a bit more fuel. But due to the unstressed nature, it has less wear and tear, and lasts longer than the other Peugeot petrol engines. Strong and simple unit.

You guys are amazing. Those gave me quite a good start.

If any noob going through the comments is wondering what those different trim levels are, there's a good explanation here

@AVANTE I'll definitely reach out to you when I am moving ahead with the plan. I just need to arrange my finances first. Quick question, I didn't get what exactly you meant by "Non-com 2000/semi mux". Even Google didn't help on that.

Do you guys know about maintenance costs? How often do you think there'd repairs that cost more than 50,000 to fix.

At the end of 1999, Peugeot and Citroen started using a protocol named COM2000 on their cars, which is actually a VAN protocol, a precursor to CAN. VAN stands for Vehicle Area Network, not advanced as CAN. Unlike VAN, CAN is not a vehicle specific protocol, it's almost used everywhere where different electronics must communicate each other. (taken from quora)

MUX - is basically short for multiplexer. It's regarding the wiring. There are 2 types, Semi-MUX and Full-MUX. Full mux was standard after 2002 I believe.

Its a 20+ year old European car. So there will be work. But it's not as bad as you think. In fact if you buy the right car, it could be as easy to maintain as a jap car of that age too.

Take a look at ebay, ikm4n and a few Peugeot vendors around panchikawatte and you'll see parts prices are very reasonable for OEM compared to Jap oems too. But ofc, buy a bad car, and the bills will rack up.

Peugeots OEM parts brands are Valeo, Magnetti Marelli, Bosch & Mann. All Premium European parts manufacturers.
