I wanted to replace the front shock absorbers as they seem to be nearing the end of their life. But then mechanic told me about places that rebuild/recondition them.
Anyone here who has done that? Is it a case of you get what you pay for? Or is it a complete waste of time and money?

My friends used to refurbish them....they did not last long. A lot depends on the craftmanship, and the parts used to refurbish. Sadly, the joints my friends tried probably didn't have either one at an acceptable standard. If they are oil shocks, they stand a better chance than gas ones.
If you are doing a complete disassembly and rebuilding it then it really doesn't matter what the condition of the shock absorber is. The fact that most places do not even attempt to build it if it is worn out too much means they do not do a complete rebuild but replace a few seals and replace the fluid. Over here rebuilding shocks are not even considered anymore because rebuilding it to the point where it passes shaken inspection costs more than actually buying new shocks. -
@AVANTE did you get your shock absorbers repaired?
I’m in the same situation.
-
Thanks @iRageand @varotonefor the valuable inputs.
@pantheraleoyes i did get them refurbished at Lanka shocks wattala. 1000kms done and so far nothing of note. Another guy claimed to have done 30k with no issues so far. Lets see how they hold up.

What does everyone here think of the new locally assembled Hyundai Grand i10?

@Gummybr Ferentinos are quite good, I put them on my car from Continentals and I still get comments on how the car feels like a cloud (although that may be also because I spent a shit ton on rebuilding the suspension when I got the car)
-
@MaleCortana wouldn't it be a bit of a concern if the tires are cloudy smooth/soft ?
I would most likely say it is due to the rebuilding of the suspension. When all those bushings and stuff gets replaced, you lose a lot of vibrations and noises as the new bushes would absorb them a lot better than the old hard and brittle ones. -
@iRage that is possible yes, I'm not complaining

@fiat fanthis should be the quote of this year!!!

@tiv it’s true though isn’t it? I still see buggers with fancy stuff that needs a lot of $. So many super cars changing hands too. Do we even have a crisis? lol

Who is (or was) the agent for Opel cars in Lanka?

Has anyone done sound deadening padding for their cars? What product did you use? How does it feel?
Thinking about doing some padding for the door cards and wheel wells. Car is quiet but for the sake of it, just want that extra bit of silence

@MrCat let's forget dynamat, this is good enough I think! Time to visit the local hardware store 😝

I took the emission test recently. The guy said the car seemed to be wasting a bit of fuel.
333,000km, 20 years old but still.. How accurate are our Lankan emission tests anyway? Need to know before I go digging into the issue and diagnosing any problems.

@fiat fan kind sir the very functional hood vents is to cool the luggage and the red stripes on the rear view mirrors is to tell Burnoulli to f* off so the car is able to cut through the air seamlessly. He cannot explain this all to us plebs so he did the math and rightfully assigned a proportionate engine capacity that would have performed the same.

@Hyaenidae exactly 😆

That's one weird thread - PreseaLover's(If that isn't weird enough) thread on a location for a house party eventually went OT into discussing his sexual orientation. A moderator had to remind the folk to mind their language. 3 years later some random dude from "Reddick" (Florida?) comments using Nigerian-Scammer-English.

Need advice:
If I'm selling an engine (small motorbike engine) to be exact on ebay. Can I ship it abroad without running into trouble with any of the officials? Will it be a pain?
-
Curfew has been lifted in my area. I and the pugger can finally come out of our caves. Its going to be serviced tomorrow.
Now the issue is, I found the necessary brand and viscosity fluids, but I can't find the recommended Bosch filter. Courier from Colombo isn't happening also. I don't wanna delay the oil change. Shall I go with a genuine VIC filter? They are good enough right? Atleast I'm not looking at any Sakura stuff.

I'm restoring a 1985 Honda Hawk CB250T.
It's undergoing engine rebuild and I'm unable to find brand new pistons for it, but I found new Piston rings, seals, gaskets.
Pistons could be ordered from abroad but they are chinese and expensive. Lol
What the previous owner has done is polished the pistons and installed new rings. Which isn't a long term solution.
Now I'm being advised by some people to find pistons from some other model that have the same dimension, take it to a lathe, and get the top part/crown carved to accommodate the 3 valves (Suzuki Gn125 pistons fit but the head is made for 2 valves). My mech said he has never tried that because he thinks it's impossible. I need insight guys.
Is this feasible?

Actually keep the tire on then, at least till your Dad gets used to riding a bike again...
Its a wider (more control) and if it slows down the bike then great! (Assuming the bike is for your Dad right? Well then, not a bad option!!) Not saying your Dad is a bad rider but its probably been a while that he's been on a bike and even though he might think he wouldn't need to re-learn any of his lost skills the truth us he will probably have a bit of a learning curve!
?
-
That's a good way of looking at things! Impressive
Last time he rode was nearly 2 years ago, and well he isn't the luckiest rider tbh but can manage. This bike is supposed to be like a weekend toy for him for short stints and backroads. I myself am trying to stop 2 wheelers and shift to cars itself for good as riding on a daily basis has scared me good.
With outstation narrow roads and sometimes coupled with traffic and all, it's almost a dire necessity to have a bike. Can't take your car everywhere so easily and quickly.

Guys.. What's the current 2020 situation with the galant sigmas? Seen a few rotten/scrapped cars. How's the parts availability now? Why don't these cool looking things get much recognition?

Lots of starlet GT/glanza Vs have an improperly closing bonnet. Why?

@MaleCortana Cars don't come with spacers out of the factory. It is something that the moders do. It was first done in drag racing cars way back during the muscle car days. It was a quick and cheap way for the kids to make the car move faster by reducing air drag in the engine compartment as well as ram in extra air.
-
@iRage That's definitely something I didn't know, thought high performance versions of normal cars would come with them XD
-
Oh no...manufacturers do not put spacers even on their GT and Touring Car championships...they just mod the bonnet with additional vents and do up dampers and such...at least so far I have not seen manufacturers use bonnet spacers.
The only time I have seen manufacturers use anything to lift the back end of the bonnet is in pedestrian safety systems (they make the hinge end of the bonnet pop up to make the bonnet sit up straight so that it gently catches pedestrians in a collision)

Watched the recent carwow video where they redline and run 3 cars without oil.
The Ford Mondeo lasts 20 seconds before engine seizure
The Peugeot 206 lasts 47 seconds
The Honda city lasts a mind blowing 6 minutes and 22 seconds
We all know Japanese cars are reliable and can take a beating/abuse better than the Europeans which adhere to strict maintenance and tolerances. I'd expect it to last twice as longer than a European under abuse. But, lasting 8 times longer than a similar European.. Eight. Peugeot was in the steel game since 1810 (210 years ago) way before Soichiro Honda's grandad himself was born. It's feasible that Honda can surpass Peugeot using good old Japanese techniques and assembly line system.
But 8 times more? How? Do they use vibranium sleeves, diamond piston rings and carbon fibre pistons?
Could it be a possibility that the Honda engine's internals were worn out so bad that it was leaking compression and the metals weren't touching each other very closely?
Or is the video staged?

@varotone maybe the oil pressure switch went bust a long time back. Also I read somewhere that Honda sets up their engine to simulate a 30 degree incline with 5 passengers and let's them run for a month and has never had an engine fail. Now I don't know if this is true or not, but still it begs the question, are these jap engines really more solid than euros? Euro car service intervals are longer than japs although they can't take abuse like the japs.
@speed8 probably anyone who has a fetish to watch good things fall to their doom. Not me lol

What are the legal obstacles one has to pass through in order to do a motorcycle engine swap in a car? (for example, a 1000cc CBR engine into a 1275cc mini?) has anyone attempted such a project in lanka before? I know the drawbacks and the engineering involved but no idea of the legality.
Edit: seems there is an R1 engined Mini here now. But that's meant for racing only.

Is it still legal to drive a LHD car in srilanka? Even if it's already registered?

Well...Toyota is working iwth Mazda on a RWD sedan. Yes...the rumor is that it is going to be the basis for a Mark X replacement and an equivalent Mazda marquee. Current size wise one can think it is the 6..but then considering the investment made in the 6's skyactiv platform...will they ditch all that and go with a RWD for the 6 now ? If they don't ditch it they might go with a badge like Sentia (which was RWD) or Millenia (replacement for the Sentia but FWD) whic sort of have a sporty outlook. Originally the Capella/Atenza/626/6 was positioned to compete with the likes of the Corona/Carina and the Sentia/Millenia, Persona etc...with the likes of the Mark II/Cressida and the Luce/929 with the Crown.

Came across a 2008 Mazda Axela that the owner claims 'is used as a 2nd car for driving pleasure'... Come on now, are they really THAT good? I get they are fun and sharp to drive but how good is it really, that one justifies it as a 2nd car? It's an automatic too. How much sharper or better are they to drive compared to a Lancer, Civic or Swift of the same year? Or is it just hype?

So...got a 2017 Mazda 3 2.0L over here as a rental car in Vietnam. We have 3 days left here and I had to give up the Fortuner a few days ago.
As before the 3 just begs to be rev'd...at low revs it feels slow and lethargic and just has this stiffyness in the pedal that makes you want to just stomp on it...when the revs reach like 2500-3000 it just zooms. The ride, even though the car is hacked is still nice and firm yet soft and still has that active feel to it.
What I do not like:
Steering is too light.
Seats..the fake leather is just yucky
The tiptronic gear box in manual shift mode is annoying...its bad enough that it is lethargic to shift up..it is 1000x more annoying shifting down when it jsut decides to jerk (not predicatable at all). So yeah....keep it out of manual shifting and sports mode

Had nothing to do so I watched Jackie Chan's thunderbolt (1995)..man that's a terrific nostalgic trip for any Mitsubishi fan I'd say.
