  1. I wanted to replace the front shock absorbers as they seem to be nearing the end of their life. But then mechanic told me about places that rebuild/recondition them.

Anyone here who has done that? Is it a case of you get what you pay for? Or is it a complete waste of time and money?

I wanted to get mine reconditioned and went to a joint refurbishing shock absorbers. After checking the shock absorber, the mechanic said it's too bad to repair and advised me to replace. The guy seemed very honest and told me that some may offer to rebuild mine but it would not hold on for long.

  2. Day by day the 'Hit' automative quote in SL is making sense is'nt it.  "සබ්බං පහාය ගමනීයන්" - Must leave everything behind.

Anybody else, contemplating on leaving SL ? I know its not the forum for this classic debate. And it has been argued back and forth. But are there any rational to stay. Because I can'nt find any, apart from parents. :(

p.s. I have been very firm on staying here in SL until these recent developments. But even if these issues in the country gets temporary solved by some loan, will there be any assurance things will get better and remain better in future.

Leaving parents, your assets here to start from 0 in an unknown setup with lot of risks. Is it still worth, the way things are going right now ?

USD pegged dollar may be a means to retain the workforce amidst increasing pressure to migrate. The company is anyway getting paid in USD, so pegging the workers salary to USD won't hurt the companies bottom line. But the disruption to electricity, unavailability of fuel, and the general instability of the economy would certainly jeopardize the IT industry

  4. What's up with larger sedans and interior abuse? Most of the 90's Cefiro, Bluebird, Camry/Vista interior bits look like a bunch of sabre toothed tigers had an orgy inside them. This is not the case with the Sunny's Corolla's Starlets and Marches *most of the time*

Even an adult German shepherd can't fit in to a Starlet. So, the sabre-toothed tigers throw orgies in barges. Simple as that!😅

  5. When driving. there is this kiri kiri rattling noise coming from inside the rear speakers. Without putting the setup on. Anything to do about it? The normal kiri kiri noise that comes in old cars

    1. varotone

      varotone

The speaker itself is loose? Tighten any screws. If you fail to pinpoint the issue, remove a piece at a time and drive the car to narrow down the source. Remove the plastic trim and drive. If the noise is still there it's not the trim. Then remove the speaker and do likewise.

The plastic trim snaps on to the board with a plastic clip like mechanism? A piece of foam tape on the underside would make it fit snug and eliminate the noise

Are you sure it is a mechanical noise and not electronic noise from the speakers? Try disconnecting the wires to the speaker and see if it disappears. The cheep-ass "usb kit" on your stereo outputs noise even when switched off.

Hunt down the old car kiri kiri noise if after confirming it is a mechanical noise. Start with the usual suspects like door cards, Window winders, door handles...

  8. Sometimes I feel like going to a owner with a good condition U13 or a Presea and tell them "Sell your damn car to me oi, you drove this enough"

    1. varotone

      varotone

I hope there's a good therapist with a mint condition Presea. And I pray to God that you see that Presea very soon!

  9. Yeah I think I finally found out what I should do. I will be changing preseas every 2 months or so, so that I can keep searching for preseas, as well as drive different preseas at the same time. No matter how good the presea I have would be, I always after sometime feel its not good enough, I wanna own someone else's presea and easily get bored with mine. Just like I get bored with girls. So this is what i should do. Damn why didn't this come to my mind before???

  10. Selling the previous car on open papers was a bad idea. The new owner has already knocked the whole of the front. Not sure how many he has run over. I gave it for open papers because he said its for his wife he is buying and RMV is closed so don't date it.

A letter signed by the buyer acknowledging the purchase may help you get out of trouble. Also, you can lodge a statement with the police stating the facts for your safety in the future. Talk to the OIC saying that you don't want to make any complain. Just to record a statement. That might let you off the hook when $hit hits the fan.

  11. Watched the recent carwow video where they redline and run 3 cars without oil.

The Ford Mondeo lasts 20 seconds before engine seizure

The Peugeot 206 lasts 47 seconds

The Honda city lasts a mind blowing 6 minutes and 22 seconds

We all know Japanese cars are reliable and can take a beating/abuse better than the Europeans which adhere to strict maintenance and tolerances. I'd expect it to last twice as longer than a European under abuse. But, lasting 8 times longer than a similar European.. Eight. Peugeot was in the steel game since 1810 (210 years ago) way before Soichiro Honda's grandad himself was born. It's feasible that Honda can surpass Peugeot using good old Japanese techniques and assembly line system.

But 8 times more? How? Do they use vibranium sleeves, diamond piston rings and carbon fibre pistons?

Could it be a possibility that the Honda engine's internals were worn out so bad that it was leaking compression and the metals weren't touching each other very closely?

    Or is the video staged?

    1. varotone

      varotone

I watched the video after reading this. Entertaining and depressing at the same time. Three random junk yard cars don't represent the manufacturer in anyway. A larger sample size of randomly selected cars would be meaningful. (But what's the purpose of the experiment? How long an engine can redline without oil and coolant doesn't matter irl)

This is just for entertainment. Period.

But the check engine light lighting up only very late and the oil pressure light failing to light up bothers me. ?

  12. Guys, whats the procedure to get a "Special No" when you register a new car? Plus can it be done on a car purchased with a finance?

    1. varotone

      varotone

There used to be a system where you can get a vanity plate of your choice (provided a vehicle is not already registered under that number) at the time of registration. It was valid for 5 years only. After that, you have to change it to the regular number that you should have received at the time of first registration.

Now there is a new system in place where you can reserve only the number in advance with the ongoing sequence of English letters. The payment depends on how far ahead the number you want to reserve is. You can pay the amount and reserve the number before you actually apply for registration. Unlike the old system, this doesn't expire in 5 years.

  13. EGR valves are ridiculously expensive. Am@y@m@ quotes $256. €ba¥ quotes $40 for a freaking USED one. There are more products to "Delete EGR" than to replace the valve!:suicide2:

In the Sri Lankan context or stock markets in general?

If you want to learn how stock markets work and gain theoretical knowledge about investing, there's a lot of books. Start with for dummies and move on with Beating the street - Peter Lunch, intelligent investor- Benjamin Graham. There are text books (I don't know the names) if you want thorough knowledge.

If you want some practical knowledge in investing in the Colombo stock exchange, (CSE) go meet a stock broker. Central depository system (CDS) conducts one day workshops for investors. More info here https://www.cse.lk/home/banners

Doesn't take much time or money to get started, mind you, it's a different ballgame in CSE. Many pump and dump schemes with manipulative big players.

  24. Guys just need you inputs on this.

Let's say a car has been used by the current owner without transferring it under his name (still on open papers) for more than 1 year. How do we know/is there any way to know whether previous owner have already submitted his copy to RMV?

Note that car is not within the limits of colombo city limits

    1. varotone

      varotone

Although the previous owner (seller) is legally required to submit a copy of the transfer form to DMV, it's rarely done. Most sellers sign the form and give it to the buyer who will or will not register the transfer of ownership. Just see if all the pages of the transfer form are signed and intact. If one copy - copy to be sent to DMV by the seller, is missing, it's reasonable to assume it was submitted.

(I may have misunderstood the question. It looks like such a simple question)
