  1. Interesting topic indeed.

What you have got there is a one in a million opportunity mate. Just think, people die trying to make that move in boats. But that being said, in the end its all about finding contentment right. I'd say to make life interesting, try to find at least few good things you enjoy there. May be its the eerie silence in the winter, May be its the good coffee or new hobby, some volunteering ? :) Try to focus on those things rather than the negatives. There must be few good aspects there... it cant be all gloom.

And if your main objective of moving there is savings, doubt you can achieve anything lucrative when living with the family with a single source of income. In that case, have you considered moving there by your self first and bringing the family after like 1-2 years may be ? By then you are settled in and have savings built up. Agreeing with @noddy, never know what will happen to SL its too volatile and no one can predict. If you held up to that job by your self given the family can manage alone here in SL without you I think that would be the best option. They can always join you in case things get too bad here.

Would love to hear others have to say, as I might be in the same boat in a few months time ;)

By the way, has anyone changed wiper blades yet? Mine are squeaky so the rubber is due a refresh. Any recommendations?

Been using NWBs for few years now. Last pair lasted over 2 years. Can recommend. Got them from Gree**Mon*** paid 10,000+ for the new pair 1 month back. 2 Years ago same pair was 6000 😪

    • Thanks 2
  3. I ordered a set of wiper blades on end of March, but had no issues. I got them in like 2 weeks. (Still it was bit late, and had to pay almost the double I payed 2 years back for the same set) But they did deliver.

But things might have changed now, 1 month is more than enough to go out of business the way things are happening now. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Second what Mats suggested, I used a Perodua Kelisa from 2011-2015. 2007 Manufactured, Manual. KF plates. Used to travel up and down from Kandy to Gampaha every weekend. Amazing car, didn't give me any issues, that 1L 3 pot is rev friendly and has some good low end torque. I could easily overtake anything in Kadugannawa with that little thing. I guess it ticks all your boxes too. @matroskawould you believe I bought that for 11.5 lacks back in the day with just 11,000 kms on the clock. God I really miss that car. 😔

    Talk about it!

The Sri Lankan version of car ownership summarized:

    1. Find the car that would make the neighbors' jealous, ticks all the boxes as per your drinking buddies and allows the wife to brag to her friends.

    2. Pay unnecessarily high amount for afore mentioned car. But do NOT transfer it to your name.

    3. Find out the previous owner has sold you a lemon at the first service - hate the service guy for mentioning that the car has met with a massive accident never go to that service station again.

    4. Dress it up - but give zero sh*ts about it's drive train. Do the cheap stuff like waxing and washing so much so it looks like Cher with all the make up in the world.  Skip services, use the cheapest replacement parts but make sure you have a cover for your remote key so that it does not have a single scratch. Invest in the most nasally devastating air freshener. Keep rolling back your odo at each service.

    5. Brag about fuel figures - make your co workers jealous. Brag how you went from Malabe to Kataragama and your car did 34 KMPL over a bottle of Gal Arrack. Make sure your conversation precedes any discussions about Kusal Mendis's batting average.

    6. When the car starts giving the first signs of trouble - get it shown to a makabass ideally someone who is recommended by Roshan who is in the tuk-stand closest to your house.

    7. Ask the makabass to patch it up. No expensive fixes. 'Malli just make the error go away'. Malli will reset the errors. Patch up any existing issues. Thank god you did not transfer the car to your name.

    8. Do a nice wax up job - post an ad : tell them the previous owner is your brother in law and you never bothered to transfer. Wait for Jayantha who is a buy-and-sell-guy from Kohuwala to haggle for  a few hours and buy it from you and make the problem someone else's.

    The process repeats.

  6. Sorry for bringing up an old thread. I am contemplating of buying a Vitara for some time now. The model I am looking for is the 1994-1995ish manufactured Vitara JLX, the LWB version. Registration number 18- , 19- or 301- I know its not be best time to buy vehicles here 😕 but will it ever be normal again, and how long to wait..

Main reason I am looking for one is tackling bad mountainous roads like once or twice a month with 2 adults, 3 kids and luggage. Wont be using it for serious off-roading. I know these comes with a 1.6 engine, not sure if these can handle that too now after these years. These are old, and changed hands numerous times, undergone engine rebuilds most are not in good shape etc.

Anyone can shed some light of this model, how they cope up with the age. I am willing to spend some on repairs if needed, and any potential modifications. And anything specific to look for when buying for one.

Any better alternatives for the price range of 2.5 mn- 3mn with 4wd ? All I seek is good ground clearance, 4WD, and 'some' reliability that It does not breakdown middle of nowhere :D fuel is not a concern. All your opinions and ideas are most welcome.

    Hi Friends,

I have a 2004 suzuki swift HT51S and recently I noticed that after starting the car power steering function is not working for a while. However when driving automatically the power steering comes in to work (after 5 - 10 minutes time). This happens only when starting the car.

Appreciate your valuable suggestions, opinions in this regard.

    Thank You

This is a known issue with this model. You will have to replace the M5 steering control module. Usually this comes attached to the steering column, thus when you buy reconditioned might have to purchase the whole steering column.

If I remember correctly it costs arround 15,000lkr or more.

  8. Hi All, my Axela 2014 has this AFS (Adaptive Front Lighting). But for some reason I find by default the beams are focused for a short distance. (Both low and high) and may be not centered to the middle of the road. Can this setting can be adjusted, I hope its not a DIY job ? Any recommended places. Thanks.

  9. Friends, has anyone of you renewed the insurance policy recently. Need bit of an advise here on setting the market value. Due to the prevailing 'artificial' market prices, is it advisable to set the policy for the market price. My agent warns me that that if we have undervalued significantly then they will pay a proportion e.g. Insured Value / Market Value. Is it true ?

Normally when you have a full insurance, the insurance company will undertake to pay to RMV when the next insurance date comes. Drawback is sometimes the payments done to insurance does not get updated on the RMV system.

I see, since I have been paying my insurance premiums online it doesn't include the lux tax portion to that. Thanks for clarifying. Wonder why RMV cant put up a system to pay taxes also online.

These taxes are collected by insurance companies.

I have always paid them to them apart from the 1st one which you pay when you initially register the car/ SUV..

You mean subsequent annual luxury tax payments ? Didnt knew that.  so far I have paid to RMV by visiting them.

What about the receipt issued by RMV, does the insurance company issue you a receipt for the tax portion ?

  12. I have been using 5W 30 Toyota oil. Never used 0W 20.

And I do change in 5000km / 6 month intervals. For me also 6 month is reached earlier than reaching 5000kms for past year.

If I were you I will change the oil in 6 months regardless. And I dont see an issue in moving to 5W 30.

  13. When you say Reconditioned, it may or may not have gone through cell replacement.

It might be taken out from cars met with accidents, in that case no gurantee on the mileage / lifetime. It may or may not have a significant life remaining.

Its a risky option if you plan to keep the car long term. If I were you I'd buy a BN from TL, dont want to risk spending around 150k for a recon one.
