  1. Forget both and buy a WagonR considering your daily figures. You won't regret. I myself drove a N 16 and it would cost u more. FB 15 is too old. If you don't care about fuel economy, my first recommendation is an EU.

Isn't it much easier to take the tire to repair shop nearby on a tuk-tuk than expecting a someone in this forum to know a mobile tire repair contact in your area? I mean think of the probability for a positive outcome.

Thanks. I have decided to do that actually. But it would be convenient as I am stuck in office with meetings. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

    Hi All,

I've a Toyota Fortuner petrol (Auto) 160,000KM. It started to develop an issue about 1 month ago. When under heavy load the engine stalls. When it is started again it runs fine.

    - It doesn't matter if it the morning or after a long trip - Eg : Ran to Nuwara Eliya without an issue and at the end of the journey engine stalled.
    - No check engine light. Scanned at Toyota Lanka and another place. No error codes.
    - Issue happens when AC is On/Of - Not relevant.
    - As I see the problem.. when the RPM goes down, it suddenly drops going below 700-800 and if there is additional load (Eg : Climbing, Turning) car struggle to keep on and if I don't press the accelerator it dies.
    - Idle is correct it seems 700-800, Verified by Toyota too.
    - Can simulate the issue by having the car on Park, pressing the accelerator pedal till RPM 1500 - 2500 and then taking the foot off suddenly. RPM drops suddenly, car shakes and then catches on after struggling(on P). On Drive (D) if same is done specially on a hilly road + turning while braking - It would try to die.
    - Happens on flat road too - I drive mostly in Colombo.
    - Throttle body and spark plugs inspected/cleaned at Toyota Lanka -No Change
    - 3M intake cleaner and 3M injector cleaner applied, Petrol filter checked at another place - No Change.
    - Pick up etc is fine, Idle is not super smooth but OK (Not very rough/vibrating).
    - My first thought was MAF sensor. Cleaned it - No difference, replaced with few other MAF sensors from Toyota's (Not the exact model though, Makabass @ work) - Nothing changed (Didn't want to buy a new One without being certain.)
    - Makabass style of vacuum leak check was done - Will have to redo properly.

Planning to put the car @ Toyota lanka, but before spending big bucks, I would like to know what you experts think ? Thank you guys !

Did you check the idle adjuster?

I had the same issue and got rid of the same by fine tuning. Tech said it had something to do with Aircon and some kinda signal it sends through.

Try accelarating to max and release it on P and see if engine stalls. If it is the case I guess u r having the same prob (most probably )

Hello folks. I'm new to the country and this forum so a big hello to everybody here. I have decided to throw in the towel after charging myself with figuring out the best way to procure a vehicle while on assignment here in beautiful SL and decided to ask for help over here. I have three requirements and three questions. The requirements are:

    i) The car needs to be a dual purpose vehicle as my work obligations require me to travel extensively across SL from Jaffna to Batticaloa to Yala-Hambantota and back to Colombo. So it also needs to be brand new with Agent Support. (Doesn't necessarily need to be bought from an agent)

ii) The highest my employer will go is Rupees 12 000 000. A spartan spec is a non issue. I'm currently interested in a Hilux CrewCab 2.8G or a Ranger Crew.

iii) A support network for the final vehicle as agreed upon is paramount. Cost wouldn't make much of a difference. Readily available spares is a huge necessity as I'm required to leave behind my vehicle by the end of next year to the next fella who will be contracted to work and hopefully it still needs to able to take a proper beating down the line.

As I was made to understand the VW Amarok is not currently being brought to SL and I've heard a few horror stories about the agents so let's leave that and the Mazda ute out. Does Sri Lanka have a strong presence from Isuzu? I would like a clarification on that aswell. Now to my three main questions.

    i) What's the import duty on a dual purpose vehicle? Is it the 57% that's been touted around or is it a much different amount?

II) Who are some of the reputed car sellers if we so decide to skip an agent? Is skipping the Agent advisable? (Toyota Lanka seems to have a good reputation at-least on word of mouth but how has softlogic fared so far?)

III) What are my other options if I decide to go a different way from a ute and decide on something different that might still fit my needs of being able to properly take a good beating down the road, carry aid material frequently and still be very reliable for around the same budget?

    Thanks heaps. Cheers

    Hi Hermano

    Welcome to SL.

If you are so reluctant on importing the vehicle yourself just ignore my suggestion.

    1) a brand new Hilux can be bought here from a reputed seller (would rather not mention names here) for around LKR 10mil (may be lesser) without the hassle of considering duty. (If you are OK with a 15-20k Km on the clock used one, it will cost you only 50% of your budget)

    2) Toyota agent support is available even you have bought it from another party. But most of repairs/services are paid.

    3) Other than Hilux, with the routes you have mentioned, I suggest a Land Rover Defender which can be bought under LKR 10mil.

Hope above helped you making a decision.

Well if u had a N16 back in 2009 it was cheaper than a FB15 ...think abt it and well pegeout 406 was barely 10lacks then... Reasons was due to bad fuel economy as u agree and also for the expensive parts of repair on pegeouts...well taking the N16 has this major engine buzz when idling if u had noticed... Although many say its normal..the actual repair of that problem isnt successful and well taking throttle response even the N16 is bad.....just my opinion btw... No experience im driving a pegeout. Only my neighbor had one and had to hear all his suffer tales... Thnxxx

I assume few things from your reply above.

    1) You are trying to grab attention of people by just posting here without true knowledge.

    2) You have not maintained your N16 car regularly. As a result you got the false impression that all N16s are bad.

    3) Your neighbour who own a Peugeot (these are my assumptions) does not know where is the right place to go for resonably priced spares and correct repairs. On top he might not be maintaining his car regularly (Neighbours are alike I guess :D )

Good luck with your future car usage and suggest to be more educated/experienced before putting comments in a place like this where lot of people with knowledge/experience.

    Hope you got the idea...

Rather a starlet which is goddamn old try for the japanese swift 1.3 , its really good in fuel(13-14)Kmpl and good pickup and less repairs due to mid range engine... Resale market of swift 1.3(jeep model im referring) is one of the best sellers and surely more than pegeouts and nissan n16 n starlet

Even comfort and boot space you will find more in a swift 1.3 than a starlet... If ur not into swift then surely go for the FB15...(N16 is the most failiure car ever...people dont understand its problem till they use it... So people blindly buy it.. DONT GO FOR N16 OR PEGEOUTS.... THEY SUCK)

    Hope i helped.... Thnx!

Can you elaborate your reasons for saying both N16 & Peugeot suck. Reason is my previous car was a N16 and present car is a Peugeot 406 which I love too much and doesn't give trouble except bad fuel economy. Personal experience of mine makes me challenge your opinion on both N16 & Peugeot.

First you need to get your priorities right.

Is it reliability? comfort? relative luxury? fuel economy? performance? maintenance cost? feel good factor? safety? that you are looking for.

I'm afraid there is no car in the market sub 2 mil price range that can achieve all the above and thus compromises has to be made.

It seems like you are looking for a trouble free car with affordable spares and easy maintenance that takes you from point A to point B.

My personal advice is to avoid indian mini hatchbacks as those are notorious for safety aspects, even though they are somewhat reliable, cheap to maintain. I also think cars like FB-15, AE-110, 121 as massively overrated cars and it is very difficult to find a clean un-hacked sample for a reasonable price.

I have never owned nor driven viva elite, but the consensus among motoring community is that, elite is a good small hatch and Japanese technology and parts included certainly raise its value to some extent.

If you don't mind euro car, Peugeot 406 is good reliable car that is relatively easier to maintain (in comparison to German, Italian and English cars) here in SL and will provide much better safety, comfort and driving thrill than most cars in its price range. Also a good one can be had for less than 1.8 mil and if you go for a diesel, it is very economical too.

Also, I think our fellow member @AJ84 has something to say about a 406. Is it a coincidence that I am recommending a 406. I think Not. :)

    Hi Kal-El

I do not recommend a 406 to a person who is looking at a 2mil budget. Even though it is priced under 2mil, maintenance will be challenging

Thank you for quick reply. I like march k12 but I read it very bad on fuel.and i don't think Perodua Axia is in my price range.but tell me how about viva elite and honda city(2004)?

Viva Elite is fine. But it is not comfortable in comparison to Japs.

Honda City is also in your bracket but it is too considered not very good on fuel.

Thank you for backing me up.

But there is still slight doubt about upgrading to an E38 from a S Type Jag. S type is a more modern (with retro looks that is a homage to original S Type of 60's) car (1999-2008) than E38 (1995-2001). So I am worried that, E38 could be a downgrade from the S type.

Now if someone with hands on experience of both cars... doors are open to share your opinions

Jag to Beemer never would be a downgrade in my views.

However it is totally upto you to decide. :)
