  1. Dear Friends I wish all of you a Merry Christmas with Peace and Love. Just to update you with a fuel shortage in Gampaha District. I am not sure whether this is the case for other areas as well. There is a speculation that fuel prices will be slashed again and filling stations stop taking stocks because of that. Top up your tanks and have sufficient backup if you are planning to travel in the holidays. Please update with your experience and any sheds still issuing the fuel. Thank You
  2. Indrajith, There was a thread on this. Please refer it first : This is very reliable model . In different countries it was introduced in different names, Yaris, Echo, Vitz etc. This runs in 1SZ-FE is 1.0 L four pod engine with early stage VVTi technology. Compared to modern engines, these engine is bit under powered. Specially when you overtake with four people on board you will notice it. Fuel efficiency depends on lot of things. In these cars you get optimum efficiency around 50-60 km/h driving speeds. Again if you try to accelerate too hard, it consumes lot of fuel. Another thing to check is gearbox. Most of these came with conventional 4spd gearboxes. By now most of these models should have done over 100k. So gearbox also matters for the fuel economy. If you can find a mannual gear, that problem is not there. There is another sedan model called Echo or Platz, same era. But a very few good cars with mileage below 100k you can find. It has both 1.0L or 1.3 L engine variants. 1.3L models are very good in fuel efficiency.
  3. No. That is only to submit the application. As explained above, " Queue 1: On arrival you will be issued a token upon verifying your NID, Driving License and Medical Fitness Examination Certificate. Then you will be taken in number on around 10." . You need to have the medical fitness certificate by then. Its a prerequisite for submission of driving license application. Medical examination will take minimum of 3 hrs. It can be obtained from any of the National Transport Medical Institute branches. Here is the branch network. http://www.ntmi.lk/index.php?option=com_gmapfp&view=gmapfplist&Itemid=205&lang=en If you are based in Colombo you can obtain from one of the following ways: 1. From Nugegoda Branch : Recommended to go there before 10.00 AM. Per day they take around 600 heads (max) . But it depends on the availability of examiners (doctors) per day. Once you get the test done, you have to reach Werahera before 12.00 noon for one day service before 3.00 PM for regular service. Non peak hours it takes around 20 mins by car from Nugegoda to Werahera. There is a dedicated (so called) three wheel service for that as well. Parking in the Nugegoda is bit of hassle when you go late there. 2. From Werahera Branch: Here both works can be get it done at one place. Still you have to get the medical test done first, then go to the driving license application. Usually many applicants for medical examination compared to Nugegoda. So you have to reach very early if you are planning to get the same day service. Usually people are there from 6.00-6.30 AM. Comparing both, it is recommended to go Nugegoda for medical examination and then go Werahera for driving license. Its saves queuing time according to me. If you don't have a strict deadline you can get the medical one day and go for driving license application another day.
  4. Found answer for above 3. "Due to the unique crankshaft design of the Atkinson, the expansion ratio may differ from the compression ratio. By adjusting the linkage to allow a power stroke that is longer than the compression stroke, the engine can achieve greater efficiency than with the Otto cycle engine. The exhaust expansion stroke was 1.78 times longer than the intake stroke." How about 4?
  5. Confused...! 1. "The higher expansion ratio in an Atkinson engine compared to that in a Otto engine is a direct consequence of the lower expansion ratio. " I suppose you wanted to mention, " direct consequence of the lower compression ratio" . is that ? 2. "Apart from that, there is nothing particularly done to achieve a higher compression ratio in an Atkinson engine" this is other way round. Atkinson engines are lower compression that of Otto. 3. "The mechanical (ie the effective piston travel ) difference between two engines is in the compression stroke." You mean piston travel distance is different from compression to exhaust ? How come it 4. "expelled gases, it does not contain a particularly high CO2 content. It is just the same air/fuel mixture at the intake manifold". You mean the air-fuel mixture is same even after combustion ?
  6. Price for 4WD has come down below 5.0M. I saw couple of cars for sale around 4.8 M.
  7. Dear All Experts, This has been discussed under several topics and this is a continuation to the feedback provided by Rumesh, back in 2016 June. ☺️. Hope you can remember it. I thought of shifting this to a new topic since it was under a topic not relevant to the content. This was your feedback This is some addition to what you have replied above. Other than the lower compression ratio (delayed intake valve closure thus less compression) following video explains the modern Atkinson engines use higher expansion ratio after the combustion, creates less pressure in the cylinder during exhaust. Technically both compression and exhaust strokes are extracting lower power from the engine during its compression and expelling cycles. This offers a better fuel efficiency. But it is under powered compared to Otto cycle engines. Further to that, you mentioned that " Expelled portion of gas mixture is sucked into the next piston on suction stroke while ECU makes necessary adjustments in EFI to take the expelled gas mixture into account.", is there a big advantage of sucking the expelled gas back into the next cylinder ? Aren't these expelled gases contain very high amounts of CO2 , which reduces the efficiency of the firing ? However, I agree with you the point that engine saves power by utilizing the pressure from the expelled gas to filling the cylinder in inlet stroke.
  8. Yes it has. 8 years. Dude, please keep it safely. If you get caught by traffic police, regardless of the mistake/ violation you did, they will send you to the court. When it comes to law carrying a illegible driving license is equivalent to not having a valid driving license. You can't argue and win on that.
  9. That argument is senseless. Because your driving skills are not related to the type of driving license you are holding. Unless you add a new category top on what you have. Driving licenses with magnetic strips are no longer issued. If you have a one, keep securely, because it has no expiry date.
  10. Why driving test for renewing your license ?? unless you met with an accident which deletes all your memory and habits. ☹️
  11. This is based on my experience of renewal of driving license. This is applicable to anyone has a driving license of; 1. Old school type (book) got damaged, faded. 2. Driving license with magnetic strip got damaged, faded. Both these types have no expiry date printed, it means you can use them as long as driving license is readable and undamaged. There was a circulation to mandate all these previous versions to be updated into new system, but it has not yet been implemented. AFIK There are two steps: 1. Medical Examination: It is compulsory to appear for a medical examination. This is done in several places in the country. In Colombo district you can go for Werahera or Nugegoda. Procedure is set out under this http://www.ntmi.lk/images/pdf/the_process_of_issuing_medical_fitness_cirtificate.pdf I went to National Transport Medical Institute - Nugegoda branch. - It opens around 8.30 AM but you can go there up to 10.00 AM depending on the numbers. Per day they take around 600 applicants. No parking inside the premises unless you are a V*P. - take your driving license and National Identity Card. - Queue 1: Here you will be measured for body weight and height. Then they issue you a simple form (Registration form for obtaining a medical fitness certificate) with a TIN number ( in order of the issue) mentioning your body weight and height. You have to fill out the rest of the details, your name, Driving license number and purpose of the medical test, date and signature. Make sure details are correctly filled, else your details in the final certificate may be wrong. - Queue 2 : This is for registration and payment. This takes quite bit of time. As far as I have noticed, they take nearly 3-4 hrs to serve 500 + numbers. They will take you according to your TIN number though you are smart to cross the queue. So not necessary to stand or wait in the queue all the time. If you know who is ahead of you in the queue, you can go out for a coffee and come back. Once you are called, they will ask your driving license, NID and form given to you earlier. First they will enter your details into the system. Will take a photo of you. Also they will ask your telephone number. After registration is completed they give you back the endorsed form. Take that to the payment counter. For light vehicle it cost Rs.800/= - Queue 3 : This for examining your blood. This was done at a separate place to the registration. Here you will not be taken strictly to the TIN. But more or less you will be there according the previous order. Produce your NID, Driving License and the form with you. They will test your blood glucose and blood group. Not necessary to take your blood group verification details. - Queue 4 : This is for examining your body fitness, blood pressure and vision. Here you will be called according to the TIN. Usually they will take you in group of 10 at a time. First they will verify your registration details one by one. Physical test: You will be given few hand and leg movements to verify any disability or abnormality. Similar to the school time PT period. Vision test : You will be checked for the vision, any play in your eyes. If you are wearing glasses, make sure to take them. Blood Pressure: They will verify your blood pressure. - Queue 5 : This is the final queue where you will be given the certificate. You will be called by the TIN. n.b: There are cases where you will not get the certificate without any trouble or they will deny to issue you a certificate. Specially if you have high blood sugar, high blood pressure or any problem with your legs or hands (swollen joints, cellulitis, etc) you will be further examined or will be rejected. X-ray examination is required for application for heavy vehicle driving license for first time. 1. Obtaining Driving License: It is not mandatory to obtain the driving licence on the day itself of the medical examination. you can go any date up to 6 months of the medical examination. You can obtain your driving license in any of the regional office including the head office at Werahera. In Werahera it is pretty much efficient and streamlined. If you go Werahera, you have to go before 3.00 PM for regular service and before 12.00 noon for one day service. But these times are little flexible as I noticed. - Queue 1: On arrival you will be issued a token upon verifying your NID, Driving License and Medical Fitness Examination Certificate. Then you will be taken in number on around 10. - After this, you will directed to counters. In the first counter, they will verify your details including the previous driving license details. etc. Then they issue you a form printed with those details and will direct you to another counter. In the second counter you have to produce your finger prints and they will take a photo of you. This is the photo which will be appearing in your driving license. After that they will print another page including your photograph, where you have to enter your postal address, telephone number, date and signature. This is basically the application form. In the third counter all the documents will be scanned including your NID, previous driving license, application form ,etc. They will punch the previous driving license before it is returned to you. Finally, in the payment counter you will be charged according to the type, regular or same day service. Upon payment you will get a receipt and temporary driving license (for regular service). According to them, in regular service you will be receiving the driving license within 3-4 weeks by registered post. For same day service you have to go to driving license collection center located outside the main building. n.b: If you are not planning to get the driving license on same day, it is advisable to go around 2.45 pm-3.15 pm, if you don't want to wait long in the queue. They don't accept debit/ credit cards, take enough cash with you. Else there is an ATM just outside the main gate. Have a good day.
  12. You are referring to the Third Schedule of the Gazette (Extraordinary) No.2079/42 dated 12.07.2018 and effect from 13.07.2018. http://www.imexport.gov.lk/images/pdf/2079-70_E.pdf. In fact this comes under CEA Act No.47 of 1980. According to my understanding present CEA acts in regulating vehicle emissions are too lousy. Recently I went through emission testing, I had a problem of testing RPM. According to the testing guy, they uses a vibration probe, which reads the engine vibration to calculate RPM based on the vehicle model. This is too empirical and vague. Guy was sticking the probe in couple of places until he found the correct place. Even with that car showed almost twice the RPM that of in their system. Finally I verified the calibration of the sensors. It showed it was OK. But I explained him this approach can go wrong due to various reasons, such as probe contact point, condition of the engine mounts, tyre pressure. I suppose optical or laser tachometers give accurate measurements. Even magnetic tachometers.
  13. Well, with all these publicized information, how some agents manage to sell vehicles without meeting those requirements, such as DFSK Glory, Zotye even to date ?
  14. Seem renewal of old driving licenses too require medical examination. useful video
  15. Almost a year ago government made an announcement saying that, vehicles without ABS and Air Bags will no longer be allowed to import to the country. But even to date there are many dealers getting down vehicles without any of these ? I wonder why government propose things if they can't commit on these. ? On the other hand I saw lot of kei models met with accidents during recent past killed the drivers and front passengers. Are those Air Bags really effective in local accidents ?
  16. Thanks. At least how long it will last without any issue? any idea of replacement or repair cost ?
  17. Hello everyone, I am after the , fuel consumption (average) and any specific issues of the following. Model: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Engine: 2.0L petrol hybrid Year : 2013-2015 Thank You
  18. Unused and/or zero mileage Vitz is beyond your budget. its over 4.0 m. But if you are particular on toyota you can go for a pixis. Passo also slightly above your budget.
  19. According to your concerns go for a any Suzuki (WagonR, Spacia, Hustler, Alto) model or any Daihatsu model. Those are within your budget. Belta and Yaris not in your budget.
  20. This is corolla This is Toyota Corolla AE112R Ascent Seca Liftback from late 90s to 2002. I used a 2002 model. Very reliable car with a good second hand market. Economical to run as well. Haven't seen this model in SL though in Aussie.
  21. Out of all three models, Suzuki wagon R is a better option due to these reason 1. All three operate in 3 cylinder engine. when it comes to 3 cylinder, dynamic balancing and overcoming the vibration have been a challenge for decades. But Suzuki has manged to get around this problem to a satisfactory level. When you sit on all these models in idling, you feel the difference. So better go and experience by yourself rather depending on what others say. 2. When it comes to maintenance, there is no big difference out of all three. But Suzuki engines are very reliable and less wear and tare. I don't agree with the below post of early stage sludge formation. It happens either if you use wrong type of engine oil, delayed oil replacement or problem with the oil filter. Our people are very smart to change odo meters, be careful to get it from a reliable place unless it is not from agents. 3. Interior quality ( comfort, finish) and other options are far better than other two models. In Question: 1. wagonR are, kei models , so they have physical car size and engine capacity limitations. Example you are not allowed to carry three people in rear seat. Other two options comes with 3 cylinder 1.0 L engines. So people think it may be quicker in initial pickup. But for me I don't find any issue , since it uses s-ene technology. During the pickup, it extract additional power from the hybrid battery. If you can manged to get a turbo version it would be far better. But only a few people getting down turbo versions. 2. Idling stop: WagonR is built to save power. so it automatically stops the engine in longer idling times. If you do more frequent stops, it may be a problem to the life of the hybrid battery. 3. Other two models are non-hybrid. So if you worry too much on hybrid battery life and replacement cost don't go for a wagon R. Usually you don't get any problem with the hybrid battery within first 5 years. But our car dealers are very smart to swap the batteries with unused cars. what is the mileage of this car ?
