    Dear Experts,

Recently I saw a very nice looking VW Polo ad published by a certain popular car dealership in Duplication road and started doing some research on the vehicle. It looked like a really good vehicle(to me), but the only problem is that it is not a Japanese vehicle. My knowledge about vehicles is not that great, but as I understand, there are certain disadvantages/hardships in owning a non-Japanese vehicle in Sri Lanka. I have a few questions that I would like to pick your brains on.

    1. One of my main concerns is that there does not seem to be a VW agent in Sri Lanka. Is that correct? I know Drive One is now the sole agent for Audi, but do they also do VW?

There is a facebook page with a shocking 34 million+ likes(even lot more than the population in Sri Lanka ? ) and the website URL as www.volkswagensl.com, but the last post on the page is in 2016 December and the website is dead.

    2. How difficult would it be to maintain a VW in Sri Lanka? Are there any reliable places for maintenance and repairs?

    3. Is it total stupidity to even consider buying a VW, given all of the above I have mentioned?

Thank you very much in advance for your valuable input!

VW agency was with Senok. Now they accommodate routine VW maintenance in the Subaru workshop at Grandpass. You don’t have to worry about this agent. But better if you speak to them about availability of spares, maintenance of the model you intend to purchase.

Apart from low center of gravity and the counterbalancing of engine vibrations,is there any advantages of Boxer engines that improve durability/reliability?(its Two, not just one head gasket that could leak)

Because the pistons move in opposite directions the natural rotational balance of the engine is very good, due to the cancelation of the piston inertia forces that move in opposite directions. Which means lower levels of vibration and harshness, which translates into less wear and tear and there fore higher level of durability meaning a more reliable and lower cost of ownership.

Edit: With regards to the head gasket, I'm with you.

because they are driven continuously on highway, the stress levels are would be lower than the same car driving over potholes in  traffic and sitting parked at the office.

And the benefit of a boxer engine of course.

A good set of maintenance practices and good driving without thrashing your car will most likely increase the life span of the engine but again will depend on many reasons. electronics will most likely degrade but again you cannot say when n where this can happen.

I saw awhile back a Subaru Impreza Southern highway patrol car logging in 500k ODO at the Agents

Yeah. J at Senok said those cars might do even 1 Million without an issue.

Can’t expect same figures with the new 1L turbo versions. A1, Civic, etc...

Time to end this. Project R is very nearly finished. It’s been four years since I posted anything and so much has happened since then. Not gonna bore you with details but will try to

    1. Update the old photo links

    2. Summarise what has happened since then.

    3. Cover future plans.

Heres a teaser for now :)

Well the government says it wants to encourage greener vehicles, but the practicality is that the new structure does not make any green vehicles which can be imported in to Sri Lanka affordable. I think there is some justification for people to be pissed off there. The new structure seems like a grand exercise in social engineering where the Govt is forcing people to not buy cars.

Also with tax structures being so prohibitive, i feel that the Govt will lose out on revenue.

As we can clearly see the government is not encouraging new vehicle imports. Is that a National issue at this very moment?

Even for the electric vehicles , the benefit is only given for brand new imports. Since our Nissan agent does not bring down Leaf , and all the other Leaf imports are not brand new, the price will remain more or less the same.

AFAIK BMW agent brings down I3 brand new. I heard the price will be reduced.

    Yep. Nissan to BMW......

  8. As we know main stream Japanese cars were popular before the major revision of Import duties in 2007 (as I recall) Then when all the JDM loyalists saw the price reduction of the German counterparts, they went after those. If Mercedes offer a 1L C class or Ford come up with a electric car with the same price range of a leaf, you can imagine the rest......

Hi, Thank 4 all of ur opinions.

Crishan, u right, it is in that site (blue one).

The car may be a seized one. But need to verify. There was a another white colour one with 44k on clock by same seller with same price (2.5 mil) , but it was sold in few days. this is 100k on clock and still remains.

But anyway, what about have a good check and test run at spot and decide whether to buy or not..?

Cuz, though I'm aware of risk, i'm love to buy this car.. because it it a good looking new car to fit my budget. paying little more for repairs is OK to be, but not in millions..!!

Any more advice or opinions please..?

    Crosswind is spot on.

A popular insurance company in SL had a good quote in Sinhala. "Laabai, Baalai"

Paying the correct price for a well maintained car sold by a genuine user, will enable you to enjoy your ride for many years to come. Just my opinion.

    Hi Crosswind,

I had refer this site several before buy cars for me and my friends, but this is first time I make a post here.

I like very much of ur posts on Ford Focus. So, I think u may help me to decide on this car pls see link,:  #####

This is actually a company used car like u hv said . but price is so attractive , I think price could be further reduced on more negotiation. (but I didn't talked to him yet). Seems like car has parked for a long while (fungus on interior)but meters are working as per photos.

Anyway, this is a manual, so will have more fuel economy than auto's..?

Looking for ur idea to decide whether I will go and check that car, otherwise it will be a time waste to me.

I assume you are referring to the advert up on Quick site.

If so do you have any idea why it is offered at a lower price tag?

Yes, but there's one red hatch that needs to be avoided like the plague. It's been through a nasty accident and never properly recovered from it.

Yes CW, it's always better to take the car to the agent or to Car Ch@&ks for a check up prior finalizing the deal. All cars came up for sale went of pretty fast.

    Hi Crishan,
No.  I am not going to get done full service.
I am just looking for good place to wash Engine bay near Kandy.

This way I can save my time!

Why wash the engine bay? Washing it during the engine oil change/full service is sufficient.

    That's true Mate! That's why I am searching a good place :D

I assume you want a good place to get the routine full service done (since you have mentioned washing the engine bay)

Since this will not be done daily/weekly/monthly, why not a visit to the agent in Colombo or an independent workshop recomended by another person?

Any one knows the quality of work done at Honda Agent. This Bike bugger hit my Vezel from behind. Need to repaint the buffer and a panel. As maintenance was done throughout from the agent, i thought of getting the work done from them.

Any one who has previous experience on paint jobs with them, comments are much appreciated.

Did a paint job when I had my Insight from their Maradana work shop. They did a good job.
