  1. It’s true we do not have sufficient electricity to cater all the consumers during peak hours, but generators that the CEB uses to provide the Peak demand are operated only for a few hours of the day, after the night peak, the generators which generate the peak demand shutdown until people begin to work next day. Next day again these generators need to restart which ingests quite a lot of money as a huge energy level is required for a fresh start, so I think what Champika’s plan is to introduce a new calculation and special tariff between the hours of 2200 and 0400 for charging cars so they do not need to shut down the generators every night which eventually saves lot of money for CEB. Pros If you can get 2 electricity connections at your home then the monthly cost for home usage and vehicle charge will not exceed 4000/=Rs. (Considering you fully charge the vehicle 9 times a month and your home usage is below 140 units) Other option is if you can go for a solar system it will save around 25000/= per month (Considering my petrol cost is 18k and electricity bill is 5k per month) but again it will be an investment of at least 0.6 million. Lower maintenance cost Cons Limited range - You can’t drive long distance Charging limitations in SL -Car cannot be charged during rainy days (half of the year in SL) Long recharging time - If you go for charging station you will need to wait in the Q for an hour or so and then charge it for 40 mins. Even if more station exposed it will be proportionally same with the higher numbers of vehicle. Lack of choice- There are very few models in the market for next few years. You can’t use the vehicle in urgent situation if the battery is in lower end Replacement battery packs can be costly
  2. Dude, you need sumanadasa to discuss about future of electric cars? You dont need to have a PHD to predict the future of something you are aware about, all you need is some historical data and some basic mathematical skills/logic and you are there.. Are you a admin or pro member here? cause I do not normally argue with most of the admins here, what i believe is- 'Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.'
  3. Quoting from the dailymirror article- "Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka is also attempting to drive the purchase of electric cars by setting the consumer’s mind at ease, as he has set an ambitious goal of having 1 million electric cars in the country in the coming few years."- 1 million electric car is something not practical to achieve at this stage IMHO, the primary reason is people do not have a wide selection, also SL people are more in to Toyota and then Honda but both of them are not yet in to electric vehicles..
  4. e-golf is a hatchback..I dont think it will make any difference in SL
  5. Rumesh88 - The questions I have here is different from all the previous Leaf posts
  6. Guys, Few questions on Leaf usage: 01) What is the cost per KM ? I have heard its 5Rs per 1 KM, but is it true? 02) What is the average mileage you can drive in a full charge? I have heard its around 100Km in city limit..is it true? 03) What is the life time of the battery? 04) How much will it cost to replace the battery? 05) Will electric cars survive in Sri lanka? The doubt I have is, There is not much selection in the market at the moment and future is also not looking promising for middle class users as there is not much electric cars in the making in next couple of years..it was different for Hybrid where there were many options like hatchbacks/sedans/suv/jeep/etc were available but I do not see much variation in electric vehicles so far… You cant make the electric vehicle trend in SL only by Nissan leaf, if there is no trend towards electric vehicles then GOV also will not be bothered to create and support the infrastructure which electric users required. Any thoughts?
  7. Guys- What about Thissa auto electrical in Maradana(darly road) ?
  8. Guys just a quick question (it's not related to the topic )- Can the digital speedometer manually altered/changed in a conventional cars (not hybrid or electric)? how do you check of the mileage is genuine ?
  9. Dude-this thumb-drive example is a very lame one... So in that case you will have to wait till the ultimate thumb-driver comes in to play... So do you think 1TB hard drive will have the same value in next 5 years? Technology is evolving so fast dude... We have to accept and move on with it... Do not worry about resell value.. Enjoy the technology... According to your example you will have to wait forever to buy a hybrid... Same example Happened to one idiot I know.., he wanted to buy a Samsung S sereius flat screen TV years ago but still he has not bought a one because technology is moving so fast that he did not have courage to buy a one.. He could have sold his old fashioned TV easily and bought a flat screen one if he did it at right time..now nobody would want to buy that old fashioned TV even if it gives for free.. Same thing will happen to gasoline cars also bro ;-)
  10. Yeah its funny how they get pissed over hybrids
  11. Thanks a lot guys..it helps..this looks like a good vehicle for the given price range..do you know why this vehicle is not so popular in Sri Lanka and why Toyota chose to discontinue this model? also do you know the average fuel consumption of this vehicle ..??
  12. Guys is this a good vehicle ? Please share the experiences..
  13. bumblebee Its too early to think about 2nd hand market, but what options you have anyway ? Petrol 2nd hand market also will be drowning in coming years , as I already mentioned the 2nd hand value of the vehicle which are cost over 2.5 Mil will be rapidly go down as everybody want to go for a hybrid these days..I have personally seen 2008 axio sold for 3.1 Mil and 2008 IST Jeep model sold for 3.0 Mil, so as you can see it's more like 700k Rs lost and no body can guarantee that this market will boost again...Regular car market is started to sink and these vehicles will be dissapered in coming years...Thats why i said its not easy to sell a petrol vehicle these days its not that Axio value has dropped down but its just that you will find it very very hard to find a buyer for a petrol car which cost more that 2.5 or 3 Mil. Any one who have over 3 Mil budget would be going for a Hybrid..and once Axio hybrid comes in to the picture it will be a nightmare to sell your 2nd hand regular axio..things will be worse if or when the allion and premio turns in to hybrids. And on the other hand, GOV has reduced the hybrid tax to promote hybrids in Sri Lanka, and once the hybrid trend gets going GOV will surely increase the hybrid tax..early stage of hybrid migration in sri lanka, people could buy a Prius for a less than 3.0 Mill with the initial tax (there were less tax in the beginning) so now if you check the 2nd hand Prius advertisement all of them are above 3.2 Mil at least, that's where the 2nd hand market stand, I don't know whether there are buyers for them but you can simply make a call to an old advertisement and ask whether he still have the car or sold out, if it's sold you can ask him the price which deal took place.. And I dont think electric cars will be a success specially in Sri Lanka, some reasons are they are not set for long trips where for 4 hour charge you can go only 120Km and other reason is we do not have that much of electricity to cater all the vehicles in this country, even if it does electricity cost will be high and it wont be economical compared to hybrid or regular cars...may be the future will be plug in hybrid for next few years where you have both options... Well what I was thinking when I bought a Honda FIT was- Simply my budjet was around 3Mil and there were/are no any other brand new vehicle you can buy for that price range with the latest technology and all, also I knew that Hybrid taxes will go up and we should act now to get some benefit in the future..In Japan, hybrid cars are more expensive than the Petrol cars..In Japan Auction you can buy a 2012 Allion for 1200000 JPY but Prius 2012 would be 2000000 JPY, its the tax deduction what makes them cheap in Sri Lanka. So anyway..about the 2nd hand market..In my opinion I think there will be separate markets for all the hybrid flavors where a different market for Honda semi hybrids and a different market for full hybrids and another market for plug in Hybrid..
