  1. Does anybody know and can recommend a good mechanic who can troubleshoot an old VW? Thanks in advance!
  2. I bought my first Kia vehicle in 2007 for the doctors duty concession permit. It was a Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDI 4WD with tiptronic transmission. I used it extensively since I was stationed mostly outstations.. and during this time until last month when I sold it it did not give any problems at all apart from routine maintenance such as brake disk pad changes etc..would you believe I haven't even had a flat tyre in that 5 years. I liked the vehicle so much last year I bought a permit and bought another Kia, this time a Sorento. The Sorento too has so far proved to be an excellent vehicle. Since I have got another permit now and do not have the need for 2 SUVs I sold the Sportage and ordered a car. So that's the reason I sold mine. The main reason however why there are a lot of new Kia SUV's in the market is that some people import them just to sell them as they had a good demand since they were one of the few good SUVs you could get for the permit until recently. Hope this clarifies a little
  3. Sorry to hear that you got scammed by this place. What I don't understand is why did you not try to sell the car yourself by advertising on Sunday newspapers. People always prefer to buy from a private seller especially if you are flexible on the price as you were. I have always advertised my cars on the papers and usually managed to sell them during the morning itself! However I think you should have complained to the police anyway. At least it will make them a little more cautious and also if more people keep complaining police will have no option but to start an investigation at the very least.
  4. You would be surprised how many times the obvious is overlooked!
  5. I absolutely agree and that is what I stated. However there are certain things that cannot be factual but is a matter of opinion; for example whether its better to buy a black Montero or a white. Well you know what I meant.
  6. I am newbie to this forum but have been a member of variety of other forums (fora?) for a long time and the following is only my opinion: 1) A forum is a "meeting place" where members can exchange ideas, get advice, trouble shoot their problems and engage in general discussions. 2) It is the responsibility of the posters to ensure that all postings are pertinent and relevant to the topic discussed and that to the best of their knowledge accurate; If they are giving their opinion based on their beliefs and not facts it should be mentioned so that others do not get misled. 3) If a member posts an irrelevant/inaccurate/out of topic, the others should POLITELY point it out with a gentle reprimand. Inaccurate info could be politely corrected. In addition the moderators could also decide whether that post be deleted. There is absolutely no need to use profanity and insult our fellow members. 4) The creator of a thread should also ensure that he is starting a reasonable and relevant thread and also his statement or question is clear to the readers. 5) Since everyone does not share the same degree of knowledge or expertise there maybe instances where a genuine question may seem stupid to others. Members should understand that these questions are asked because the poster is actually looking for an answer and should respond accordingly without belittling the OP. 6) The moderators should take a prominent role in making sure that insulting and abusive posts are deleted and the dignity of the forum is maintained 7) We should all bear in mind this is probably the only forum where we can discuss about vehicle in our own local conditions and should try to keep it informative and productive. Entertainment is good but not at someone else's expense. 8) Members who repeatedly violate forum etiquettes should be warned by the moderators by PM and if they continue to be abusive towards others should be banned. However light hearted bantering should be recognized for what it is and should not be overreacted to. Kudos to the original poster of this topic as I think it is timely and appropriate as I have unfortunately seen some unacceptable posts in this forum. I hope every one will cooperate as etiquette should be something that comes from within us and not something that should be enforced. Cheers!
  7. What you need to do is to get a set of alloy wheels (maybe trade in the ones you already have) for a set with a bigger rim size; ie if the one that does not fit is a 14" rim size get a 15" set. But make sure that you compensate with the tyre size so that the outer diameter of the wheel is unchanged. Example: If the ones that does not fit are 14" rims fitted with the tyre size 185 x 14 SR 70, get a 15" rim set and fit is with 185 x 15 SR 60 tyres. Cheers!
  8. I think our private bus owners are already half way there, because they are already adding about 5 ltrs of petrol when they fill up their tanks with diesel!
  9. Not true! This is the case only if the vehicle was imported using a govt servants (Commonly known as DOCTOR'S PERMIT) duty concessionary permit, as during that time there was a price limit of 16,000 USD for a type 2 permit and if you opted for a Auto transmission the 4WD would be out of budget. HOwever if the vehicle was imported normally or with a provincial councillors' orMps' permits you could get any option you wished. About the vehicle, I bought a 2008 Kia Sportage which is the same as the Tuscon and a 2012 Kia Sorento which is the same as the Santa Fe (not the model referred to in this post) and both are excellent vehicles which are trouble free. My Sporty has done almost 80,00kms and has not even had a flat tyre yet! Several of my friends have the 2008 Santa Fe and are extremely happy with it and are infact waiting to buy the new version due next year. The price is reasonable if the vehicle has been carefully used, but is the currently going price for it. Since you must be knowing your friends vehicle I would say go for it! Good luck.
  10. The best and most economical method of converting a 2WD to a 4WD is by selling the 2WD vehicle and buying a 4WD vehicle.
  11. I am not working for any insurance company and don't have any affiliations to any motor related industry. I too had a bad experience with J A N A S H A K T H I and now I insure my vehicles with S R I L A N K A I N S U R A N C E and twice I have had accidents. Both times I called the Insurer and they sent a representative who took pictures and had me fill a form, after which he said I can give my car for repairs. I gave the vehicle to the agents, and even got rental car till the repair is done, and the insurance company paid the bill directly to the agent (inclusive of the rental) and all I had to do was pick up my vehicle and return the rental. Very good service and the only cost to me was like 4 telephone calls. I agree that their premiums are a bit high but i feel its fully worth it considering how hassle free and stress free the whole procedure was.
  12. For those who have KIA vehicles, everything you need such as workshop manuals, parts list, maintenance schedules and technical service bulletins can be found at www.kiatechinfo.com . Registration is free but the site works best with Internet Explorer.
