  1. That is a decision you have to make for yourself based on taking both on test drives....Sorry to be pedantic but there is nothing called a RAV4 Vanguard. RAV4 is one vehicle (SWB) and Vnaguard is a different vehicle. I personally prefer the Vanguard over the Sorento but the Sorento is also a decent vehicle and I believe you would get a bit more bang for the buck with the Kia. Also, you do get quite a few of them around and the local agent supports the vehicle so you are always covered. The Vanguard..well..for the most part it won't be any more difficult nor easier than maintaining a normal RAV4 (the local agent did NOT sell that many RAV4s in SL and 99% of RAV4s you see on the road are grey imports and our expereience with the RAV4 has been that third party parts suppliers have a lot more parts on hand than the agent). I have seen several Vanguards around...albeit almost all of them are 2WD. Even in Japan the Vanguard did not sell that well compared to the RAV4 mainly due to the price...which also reflects on why the thing never made it to SL.
  2. The 3rd Generation RAV4 came in two body types....the Japanese and some european markets got the RAV4 in Shortwheel base form, whilst some markets got it in Long Wheel Base form. However in Japan both the Short and Long wheel base versions were sold. The SWB was badged as RAV4 and the LWB version as Vanguard (so it is incorrect to call it RAV4 Vanguard...although one can be understood for calling it such). THe Vanguard was introduced to the Japense market as the replacement for the Kluger (Highlander in other markets) as the new model of Kluger was not introduced in Japan. If you are looking at the 2.4L Vangauard then it has the same engine and gearbox as the RAV4 (the variant that is common in SL) which is a 2AZ engine with a K112 series CVT. If you are looking at a 3.5L variant, then is has the 2GR engine from the Crown with a U151 5 speed automatic transmission. The 2.4L variant machanical parts would be easy to find because there are plenty of SWB RAV4s around. The 3.5L engine parts would be a bit harder to find but not impossible. Some body parts between the RAV4 and Vanguard are interchangeable..some are not...so those parts owuld requires some hunting down. The 3.5L variant is a lot more nippier and fun to drive with the extra power and raunchiness of the automatic transmission. The 2.4L with the CVT is also prettier decent but the CVT takes a bit of the fun away. The Vanguard is not as nimble as the shorter RAV4 but it does feel a bit more stable and comfy at higher speeds (as to be expected with a LWB). As for the third row seat at the back....it is quite easy to get in and out of and has enough leg room space if you are a short built person and the middle row seat has been pulled a bit forward. Same goes with head room. Shoulders would be rubbing a bit though. With the third row seats down you will have luggage room for 1 medium suitcase and some grocery bags and that is it.

    Usually the JDM vehicles would have softer spring rates and lower perches along with, in some cases, shocks that have different strokes and captive regions than their export model counter parts. The latter models, especially for places like Sri Lanka, SEA, etc...; are designed with the assumption of them being for hard road usage (emerging/developing markets).

    It is technically illegal to have more than the number of passengers registered in the "book" (which is what the manufacture has indicated) travelling in the vehicle...so yes it is illegal...but SL being SL...the authorities do not care a ##@[email protected] unless the vehicle meets with a deadly accident and it makes a good news headline. Technically, it is NOT safe to do so....the vehicle does not have enough seat belts nor are the other supplemental safety systems designed to safely transport more passengers than what the has been designed for (so everything from people not wearing seat belts to how the body crumples in an impact can actually hurt the occupants..don't forget..crumple zones are designed with a X number of buckled in passengers in mind). But SL being SL....people do not care about safety... Comfort wise...no it is not comfortable....even with small built people. The seats are designed in such a way that each spot will comfortable seat one person...when bums start crossing across these seating regions/areas..it becomes very uncomfortable as there are height difference on the seat surface etc....not to mention limited shoulder space. The above applies even with small kids ! Kids MUST be bucked in safely and comfortably. If you do not buckle your kids properly you are a bad parent and should be canned in public. If your kids are small buy a child seat. If child seats are expensive....well..you hsould have thought about that before spending that extra 2 or 3 million on a car you bought for "patta resale/market" factor and ""thel supiriyata karanawa" factor and all the impressing of the neighbors and colleagues factor. If you have to transport more than 5 people in a vehicle..then you will need a 7 seater SUV or a minivan. If buying a minivan or SUV is out of your financial means (which is surprising considering how much Allions/Premios cost); think about buying a slightly smaller sedan and save some money. With that money, when you need to travel to Kataragama with 6 people...rent a minivan for the trip. If you have to transport 6 people on a daily basis...then...you still need a SUV/Minivan....think about going for a slightly older vehicle that fits your Allion/Premio budget and is designed to carry 5 to 6 people. Sorry...you touched a very touchy-feely subject....

Those who do so are lying to you and you do not need them in your life to advice you. Go to a garage that can do an ECU reading....they will see what error codes your car is giving and advice you on the actual problem from which point you can start to look for solutions...

    So far the press release says NEXT N-Box...so the presumption is that it is the next generation....on the other hand with most of these kei cars..the next generation is mostly just outward refresh because the platform (engine and even the frame) remains the same for ever and ever. For example the Suzuki kei engines have been around for ages with nothing but new improvements over the ages and generations of models...

I doubt this would be that popular in SL (atleast for the next foreseeable years) even if this was offered in SL cheaper than even happened to be better than the 200 series mainly because of the SL market's mentality. What is ironic is vans originally did have front noses....Also, in SL people do not seem to care that much about safety....

    Axio - New shocks or 'used' shocks?

    Nope..it is the same....the Toyota numbers are different from the KYB numbers ! That is a given ! Like I said before, there are conversion tables out there which will say what the KYB part number for a certain Toyota shock absorber part number is ! For example, 48510-12F10 Toyota part number might be KYB number 33318902 or something. Same goes with other parts like spark plugs, etc.... The reason why TL shocks are 120% more expensive is of three fold: 1. It not because they are different but because they yarn tales to justify/hide keeping a large markup. Last year I bought all 4 shock absorbers, lower and upper control arms and stabilizer links, steering knuckle joints, bushes, and dust boots for our RAV4 in Japan from my local Toyota dealership. It cost us a total close to 132,000yen. My dad checked the price in SL for the same parts (before buying them in JPN) and the total was nearly 450,000LKR for the parts alone (one front shock unit assembly was nearly 80K !!! vs 20K yen in JPN). The exact same part ! Same Toyota box, same numbers. The 132,000yen with 40% import tax (which we did not play) plus another 11,000yen for postal fees for the shock-absorbers still does not amount to what TL charged. (at the time the exchange rate would have been about 1.33 for 1 yen so you are looking at about 255K LKR, that is pressuming we paid full taxes, versus 450K ...a markup of 200K ??? 2. Sometimes the manufacturer sells entire kits whilst the source manufacture might sell just a component of the kit (although it would not apply to shocks in some cases) 3. TL and most other agents do not have much parts sales because of the cheaper third party parts flooding the market along with independent part suppliers bringing in genuine parts (and fake ones) from other markets....so the agents have to mark up their prices to account for lost sales as they still have to cover their operational costs. (This is speculation on my part) Granted the KYB agent might not have the direct part they give to Toyota due to market differences as you suggested for certain models and might just have a compatible one. Even within a certain product series (Excel-G or Gas-a-just, etc...) you get different spec'd units and what you get in SL might be those spec's for local conditions. Also, sometimes a car model might have different type of front shocks through-out its production period for which the local KYB distributor might only have the direct replacement for only one type. For example , the Axio 16x series has 3 different types of front shocks (each with slightly different specs), but fitment wise can be installed in the entire Axio 16x range. The KYB agent might carry only the direct replacement part for just one type of thie Axio shock but sell it to any Axio (so if the Axio comes with Toyota shock number A,B,C KYB-SL might only have direct replacement for A, but still will sell it for an Axio that might have come with shock B or C) .However, the KYB agent (can't remember the name but had their office/showroom at Hyde Park Corner) had the direct replacement for my Mark X...so it is hard to imagine that they do not have the direct part for an Axio (or they just have only one part). But yes..the height and other aspects could be because it is not the direct replacement but a compatible model added with the fact that they need to be broken-in. Yes...in SL you do not get the higher end options for almost all parts (unless you go to specialist parts suppliers). At the end of the day your choices are: 1. Pay a 120% markup and buy from TL 2. Buy from KYB agent a direct/exact replacement (which they might not have but only compatible unit) 3. Buy a used ones 4. Go to a reputed car parts importer (independent guy) and get them to bring you down an actual set of shocks purchased at a Toyota dealership in Japan Option 3 is completely a waste of money...only time I would tell people to buy used shocks is if they see the car they came from with their own eyes and watched them remove it after you agree you would want them... but even then...I would not tell them to have much long lasting hope. I too have not heard of anyone complain much about Excel-Gs for street cars....

    Axio - New shocks or 'used' shocks?

    Used shocks are senseless...you do not know the status/condition of the units you are buying. They might last for 40,000km or they might just last for 400km..you never know. Just buy new. Also..shock model to shock model there is no difference so if you buy the same line of KYB shocks from TL or the agent you will get the same ride and height....like some of the comments above...the difference in height and stiffness is typically because of the difference between the new shocks and the old worn out shocks. Look around the internet...you will find the corresponding KYB part number for the Toyota part-number and you will pretty much get the same thing. In Japan the price between the KYB and the same shock in a Toyota box/labelled-bag is the same. In SL it is not so because the agent charges a premium for Toyota authorized parts (partly because they need to make up for lost sales due to cheaper parts in the market and partly for other non-sensible reasons).

    This is what happens when safety takes precedence over the aesthetics (and there is no way of avoiding it). The front-nose came about because the previous nose-less models were having trouble meeting increasing safety standards (yes..Japan still has the old nose-less model because safety standards in Japan, especially for commercial vehicles, are still crap and most updates will not take effect until 2021). On the plus side..this model apparently had gotten a 5 star rating in A-NCAP tests and were commended for it. But yes...the compromise is that it does not have the simple and nimble practical functionality of the old model.
  18. On a side note....there is nothing called a perfect car...every car on the face of the planet has some niggle. With the CR-Vs we had...the notorious diff whine came up abnormally (1st gen)....steering fluid started bubbling out because a seal in one of clips for the hoses wore out (2nd gen)...the interior rubber started chopping off at the edges like a dog had bitten it (2nd gen)...the AC compressor started getting a a very low whine (still kept working with no issue),etc..but they were all just simple issues easily fixed and even then the car kept running...even the RAV4...little things like that..so...it all depends on what you expectations of reliability it....and these were all cars that were taken care of like babies.

The CR-V, RAV4, Harrier....they are all pretty reliable vehicles with time proven tech (in the case of a Hybrid Harrier then there is the issue of depleted batteries which you will have to consider..but there are petrol ones around). The issue is you need to make sure you find a properly looked after vehicle. If properly looked after and will scheduled/pre-emmptive maintenance these thing will run for much longer without any difficulties. So make sure you find one with a decent service history. The CR-V has an advantage in this regard because there were a lot that were imported and subsequently maintained by the agent. Then get it properly inspected by a 3rd party Car Check place or the agents (if possible both as the two have strengths in different areas). Nevertheless...save some money to do some repairs as soon as you buy it plus a bit more for some running niggles that might turn up over the next few months).

    Try changing the cable on your existing antenna. Sometimes if it has shaved (and touching something) or broken it might be bad....is there an "antenna" "drawn" on the windscreen ? If so it might be damaged as well...since you do not have an external protruding antenna fixing one neatly can be tricky....even if you get a pasting type fin antenna (or a conventional rod type) you will have to drill the body at some place to pass the cable in or you will just have to pass it in through a door crack or something. To remove the stereo you will have to take off the surrounding bezel. Os of the time they are clip ons. Be careful when you pull it out because if you break the snapping clips it will never fit properly and will be vibrating. Once you remove the bezel you will see screws...you will have fogure out which screws to remove as it is different from car to car (in some cars you can just remove the stereo in some rare occasions you might actually have to remove another panel to remove the stereo). There are plastic prying tools designed to remove these bezels....try those or you can use a butter knife of something. Try not to use a screwdriver to pull it out as the screwdrivers are thick it will leave marks...(one of those micro screwdrivers would also be okay I suppose)
  21. From your list the CR-V would offer the most luxurious and refined ride and features. You are looking at the RM series....until 2014 the RM was assembled in Japan for the Japanese market and those had a bit more refinement in available trim levels. So getting a JDM import would give you a better bang for the buck. There is nothing wrong with the rest of the range...after 2014 the Japanese assembled ones were available only for the export market and that was slowly phased out with production being exclusively outside of Japan. Vehicles assembled outside of Japan have nothing wrong with them and are on par with Japanese assembled vehicles in terms of quality. Only difference is that these were for developing and other export markets, thus, the trim levels were different and the type of materials used for upholstery, accessories/features, etc were more suited for local conditions than the JDM variants. If you do not mind something slightly older....you can look in to something like a Harrier or the JDM RAV4 (the A30 series was available in Japan till 2015 and there are quite a few permit imports in SL). Out of these three the RAV4 would probably be the most SUV feeling with a more utilitarian interior and feel. That also means the RAV4 has a less luxurious feel. However, the RAV4 feels more nimble and lighter and peppier than the CR-V and Harrier (granted we have owned only the CR-V and the RAV4 and the Harrier use has been limited to short term loaned vehicles). The Zezel gasoline will not have the DCT issue as the gasoline variant did not come with it. Not sure if you find any of those in SL though. and even if you did it probably might not be worth it. The Vezel and the Vitara feel more like a cross over coupe. The X-Trail....well I have the suspension..the gear box sucks...the gasoline variant is under powered and the hybrid is barely sufficient to pull itself around. No comments about the MG.

    Yes...L048 was the model designation for the LWB 2.3TD. I think 46,47,48,141,146 were long wheel base versions. Typically there is a G at the end if it is a SUV variant; if not it was usually a van which was a (V)/special vehicle variant. Now...the following is just me spilling out what I remember. The combinations were endless and with so many markets there were quite a few codes....but generally in the Japanese market and a few other general export markets: The segment after the "-" indicated the body and spec variations.... If the first letter was a W it meant it was a Super Wagon, V at the first position signified a Van (...in the japanese market which was referred to as a wagon in export markets...not to be confused with the V at the end of LxxxV), the G at the second or after position was designated for Wide body/fender. A "R" (not at the end) signified 4A/T, F a 4M/T and N a 5 M/T. A standard V at the beginning implied a Metal top which is either a flat roof in case of a 3 door/SWB or a high roof in a LWB. A M indicated a mid-roof (which you are referring to as flat roof). T at some position for Turbo. L or R at the end signified a LHD or a RHD. In the Japanese market they had a J, X or a D to indicate a grade. For some models J referred to GL and in some JX and the X indicated a XL and D indicated DX. I have no idea what your VGJ code is....the Japanese market unit did not have a VGJ code. If one was to use the Japanese coding scheme it would mean your vehicle was N/A, was in a market that had only one type of transmission, was a Wagon (or in Japan a Van), came in a wide body configuration (in some markets this also meant that it had the wide track but not necessarily the wide body) and was a GL grade. Since the M is not there it might suggest it is not a mid-roof. Again..the permutations were endless depending on the market....so yeah.... Budding and swapping bodies is illegal (in all parts of the world) for safety and security reasons. If a body has been swapped LEGALLY, there should be letters from the RMV authorizing it and the issuance of a body permit for importing the body (or something of the sort; not entirely sure of all the documents). Basically,the only thing you can swap without prior approval are the body panels (inner frame/chassis needs to be untouched). Even then the body panels have to be a one to one replacement and not change the original design of the vehicle. In SL, people get away without any of these formalities because our guys are too lazy to check the legality of all these and even if they did check they turn a blind eye if "gratitude" is shown.
