  1. OPINIONS WANTED ASAP.I gave up the idea of moving to a new car for a few months. But suddenly a relation of mine said that he is going to sell his 2013 Allion due to the reason that he bought the new Eclipse Cross for the permit. The car was very well maintained with KW plates imported on permit,in Maroon colour. Not met with any kind of accidents.G plus package.Only problem is that it had done 110000km.The running is almost based on highway and around colombo with good maintainence and he is quoting around 5million.For me he would most likely to reduce the price a bit.I know I have to stretch my budget to the extreme for that, but the car is in good condition. He said that he did repared the AC and an interior cleaning is needed, since he has two kids.Does it seems to be a good bargain?Sometimes he is likely to reduce the price further.Should I grab or let it go?Since he is very famous around the family for maintaining cars very well,I’m a bit hesitant to let it go?

Yup this is the 1.5 version.I always wanted a 1.8.But 1.8 version seems to be extinct in the 2013+ models.Only seen a 2011 A18 so far.

I will definietely consider about the strut bars mate when I bring her home?

    3. iRage

      iRage

Well...thanks to our lovely import tax structure...many 1.8++L did not come to the country. SO if you do not see 2013+ 1.8L variants, its probably because it didn't make sense for anyone to bring them during the period :D Like right now...wouldn't bringing down a 1.8L Allion be ridiculously pricey ?

    4. alpha17

      alpha17

Yup mate the 1.8 Allion in SL will cost equal to the S class in USA??‍♂️

@alpha17 apparently the  1.6L Z6 engine makes 105hp  and the 1NZ-FE makes 109hp... so you might have felt the extra 4 horses in addition to the CVT :D

Looking forward to the ownership thread btw. Did you find someone to restore the silver trim panels yet?

@Hyaenidae not yet mate.I’m a bit busy these days. The owner also had no time to fix the doors’ fabric upholstery. So I plan to visit Lal Cushion works to fix that. Also PreseaLover gave me the contact number of a known painter.Still I’m finding for a specialized place for these kinds of repairs.Plan to fix all of them before New Year?

@alpha17 95 on an allion is unnecessary right? Unless of course you are pumping that IOC stuff (i dont remember the name).

Also, since it's now lower why not just slam or hellaflush that allion with some Modellista or similar body kit & add a twin turbo setup, an ECU chip & 650cc injectors along with hoosier drag radials and some brembo brakes. Just saying...

You should know....driving around with worn out shocks is not only a safety hazard but can lead out to other components wearing out prematurely. It can even lead to interior bits starting to make little vibrations....

I got like 100-120mm of ground clearance at the front of my Hiace and the front tyres are further away from the front bumper compared to a car. You get used to the lower ground clearance after a while, your driving style will change over time. For example, when you come to a start or end of a hill/slope you will get used to going over it at an angle and also start spotting the smoothest line to tackle it :D

@Magnum no machan there are few silver insertings. The multifunction button panel is silver. The door’s inner handle is silver. Most of them tend to wear out faster. @RuslanThere was one place advertised in fb and I went there after calling. They said that it’s the same part I wanted. But when I got there it was the chrome door opening handle.Best thing to do is repainting them.I checked with few other shops and most of them said they are not available. The thing is when I went to inspect a car in a car sale, with a mileage of 79000km(probably done more),all those silver insertings were perfect. It should have been repainted.

  6. Went to inspect a 2007 Allion near Colombo. When I saw the ad from a sale site and called, the owner said he is the registered second owner, with genuine mileage 93000km, service records with 100% condition. Then came to know that he and I had graduated from the same university, same year batch. Then without hesitation today I went to inspect it with a friend. Man oh man!!! The car has been fully painted from a makabass. Therefore the paint is like "hodi gala wage". Even the front left side had met with an accident and the signs can clearly be seen. Engine had oil dripping marks. The car took so long to start due to bad battery. Went on a test drive. Bad hub razors, brake problems,so and so...So disappointed...Then left the place thinking how good is my current ride.

Guys, its getting really tiring to see thread after thread, post after post of people asking about the fuel consumption of this and that car model.

My advise is if you have to worry about how much your car is doing on gas, sell the bloody thing and take a bus!

If not just look after your car properly, pump the specified fuel, stop pouring in all the muck you see at 3am on As Seen On TV in to you engine and just enjoy your vehicle.

A 2-4 Km per liter difference will not make you a happier human being, especially when you are stuck in Colombo traffic during the school rush on a hot day with AC full on!

Cars on SL roads average 6-12 Km/l if your car is within that range, shut up and drive.

Like I said, if you have sleepless nights over this minor issue, sell the car and bus it!

this comment by @VVTi on crisco nihal thread is the most valuable note for anyone looking for a car. If you love and value your ride and take good care of it, that's all that matters. Resale value, should it be a high priority, will hold reasonably irrespective of the fuel economy if the car is well taken care of and in good nick. Just my thought :)

But the fun is unlimited all through the thread. :D

I totally agree with you Avante about the Swift. I haven’t driven the your generation (what they used to call beetle model) but the older gen (jeep model?) is driven frequently. Really fun to drive. Nimble and easy. I hope the newer one is miles better than those mainstream Toyotas to “drive”.

I know I have to forget about driving pleasure totally. Anyway Ground clearance is a major concern as most of the new cars like fit, aqua touches the floor when entering to our house premises.

    4. alpha17

      alpha17

@MNI Nope mate. Due to the lack of good samples I'm being patient and waiting. Ready to wait anytime till I get my hands on a well maintained one in good condition for less than 4.5 million, or till my budget expands to 5 million. I know that there are only a handful number of vehicles which fits my criteria, since I want a 1 or 2 owned, less than 120000 kms done with records(less than 100000 kms if possible:D), G Grade one (since there are only two grades in  2007 Allion 1.5 and 1.8; base grade and G grade. This can easily be identified by the meter panel),prefer 1.5 or 1.8 (again 1.8 is preferred if possible:D). Exterior colour and interior colour is not a major concern, but can't stand that bright red:action-smiley-012:. I know I have to wait for a pretty long time:rolleyes:

  11. Went to inspect 3 Allions(2-2007 240 and one 260 1800cc)and a Mazda 3. Actually they are from car sales. One 240 has met with an accident and the comples nose cut have been replaced(i noticed),but quoting 3.9million. That particular car had a problem with idling since the car rapidly changes the rpm. The not a single car justified the price. Mileages have been tampered for sure, but none had a pleasant interior. Even the 260 has developped a funges on the back seats and arm rests, which is a sign that the car has been sitting there for a long time. After inspecting, getting inside my car gave me a sigh of relief. My good old 121 had a better condition than all of them but anyway I’m going to find a 260 allion patiently.

I have never driven a Mazda 3. So there was one which had a decent interior, and the engine was well tuned exhausting water drops. So I drove it. I expected more from a Mazda.overall the car is not smooth or comfortable as a Corolla, but felt well planted and heavy. The steering has a weight and a feel but overall I think the car lacks refinement and comfort levels I expect. I floored it and the engine loves to rev and shifts quickly, but lacks a punch. Overall I felt I was cramped inside and Hondas felt better. That’s maybe the car may not be in perfect condition, but I don’t know...The Mazda 3 doesn’t rang any bell for me?I know the Mazda 3 has been praised everywhere for its sportiness, but I think there are 2 major reasons for this.Either the car is not in a mechanically good condition or my mind prefers the numb and smooth Toyota ride?

      alpha17

@hrmI’m not in a hurry, so ready to wait for another 6-7 months to grab a good one. This selling craze started because one of my father’s closest friend owned an Axio Luxel Alpha edition, which is personally imported and used carefully told me that he is going to sell his car and go for a hilux. But he was not ready to spend over 4.8 million. Due to lack of good examples, his idea changed for a vezel and almost all the people told him about the dual clutch as a “major fault” which caused him to keep his current car. So I had to go through a very hard time, since the car was advertised and 3 buyers were ready to purchase it. He might not sell it for about another couple of years. Since my budget allows me to go for a new ride, I kept finding a car eversince

    4. hrm

      hrm

Yeah patience is the best thing. But if you spot a good one you have to hurry as a sale bayya would grab before everyone else. When I bought my car there was a tug of war where I knew the car is genuine. Owner being a good guy didn't accept my advance payment due to some other guy had made an offer. I offered more but the thing went on for couple of days until owner found out the other person is a car sale guy so I was given the chance. Good ones sell out soon. Lemons remain for months.

  13. What do you guys think of this car? It was purchased by one of my friends, a few weeks ago. An Allion. The car was manufactured in 2017, imported by a permit holder, and registered in 2018 November. When he brought the car home it had done around 4900km. It’s sure that the SL user had used the car rarely since the windshield writings are still there. The insurance was expired a few months ago too. Everything just feels as new. But when he asked me before buying this car, I advised him to check whether auction sheet is true. He couldn’t find one, so he just went and bought the car from a sales guy. The car is in brand new condition, but I’m still unable to believe the mileage done in japan. Altogether the car had done only about 5000km... but for whole 2 years, considering the fact that it was in japan for 1 year it’s a bit puzzling me about any hidden truth...I don’t know, it’s the feeling I get. There was another one made in 2018 with around 10000km and I adviced him to get that one instead, as the mileage done is unbelievable. Somehow he bought this for around Rs.80,000 less than the 2018 one...What’s your idea?

      matroska

completely ot but why do sri lankans hate wagons?

    3. iRage

      iRage

I think it is the simple fact that actual wagons were converted to hearses and that has created a stigma for the whole body style. So anything that had the same body style was hated. Actual wagons were as pricey as sedans (eg. Fielder and Axio) so because of the stigma I would say they preferred to go for the sedan ?

Interestingly what we call wagons are actually van variants of the body style...the DX Wagon..is actually not a wagon but a stripped down business variant...same with the ëlephant back Corolla..the wagon variants of these were the KE73G and then the AE101G (G/L Touring wagons). Same with the Nissan AD series....but then again these actual wagon variants were as pricey as their sedan counterparts....

    4. matroska

      matroska

yeah the popular 'wagon's were all Vans - bland and minimal. There was a Sprinter carib for sale on a fb car group a couple months back...those are extremely rare. Guess since we are not 'practicality' oriented people we prefer sedans (compared to  europe for instance where you rarely see a sedan)

  15. Been reading a post about Axio and reminded me of many many things. Anyway, the most significant thing is that Toyota watered down it’s quality and refinement after the 140 series. I’m not talking about the all new Corolla series, but the 160 series Axio. Yes, the 140 X grade had less options than a doctor sunny and the interior was plasticy. Still the colour combination of the enterior, design shouted that you are in a class above of all the Vitz and Belta owners. But the 160 series interior is lacking this plush feeling. Interior is dull and you get the same feeling like you are in a Vitz. Also noticed that the engine is more noisier and unrefined, where the 140 series sound deadening was closer to that of the Premio and Allion.

Then finally, Toyota rolls out the “just” Corolla crushing the Axio and even the Allion, Premio in terms of options and looks. The ride might be better too due to the independent rear sus.

@fiat fan Software glitches are somewhat acceptable as they can be rectified through over-the-air updates...But the CLA and A classes are not meant to be the ultimate Mercs in the lineup. So purposefully, they are designed with cheaper materials, but cannot accept the poor fit and finish. We’ll see how they would hold up against SL conditions.

But I see some horrible cost cutting in the new Toyotas. 2016-After Premio/Allion got some features reduced. There was a cool light in the center console which lit up when you unlock or in the near proximity to the car. It was removed...I really love that light which was there from 2007 models and at that time there this was a bit of a never-seen-before-thing in their class.

In the Axio, it’s seen everywhere.

    3. Ruslan

      Ruslan

Axio 160 is more of a Budget piece of shit to me ?. Finally Toyota is getting their act together and replacing it with a "Proper" Sedan this time. i still loves 90's Engineering, those are rock solid beasts. Analog Rules. ?

    4. iRage

      iRage

Well..the 140 series Corolla Axio was based on the same platform as the export 140 Corolla/Allion/Premio....the only difference was that they cut down the dimensions of the body panels to meet the "Japanese" road sizes. The Corolla is considered to be the car of Japan because that is the first car from Japan that made it in the global market next to the Land Cruiser. Being the car of Japan the Corolla catered to all walks of life..so the 140 series Aio had the basic variant all the way up to a classy variant (i.e. the Luxel).

With the 160 series things went hay wire....I believe it was a period where Toyota was having trouble redesigning new models for their lineup and figuring out where to invest in terms of redesign, especially when Toyota was learning the value of an integrated  platform from Mazda (SkyActiv) .So the 160 Axio redo was plagued with uncertainty stemming from not knowing what to do with the Allion/Premio, Vitz, Aqua which all needed redoing, Crown getting reworked whilst the Mark X was hanging, etc...and it seems like Toyota put all its efforts in coming up with the CHR, Yaris and the new Crown as models and then working on the TNGA platform. The TNGA was a smart move...working on the CHR was smart, working on the Yaris was also smart as hatches were the only segment un-effected by crossovers. The Crown was a gamble which paid off but short lived. However, the stupid move was moving the Axio 160 to the same platform as the Vitz/Belta/Yaris...yes....the 160 Axio went a step down. The Japanese considered it an insult to the industry but Toyota was stuck with it. IMO they should have stuck with the same platform as the previous model (which they still used for the 160 Corolla, Allion/Premio) and just stuck a new body on it....but I guess they went down a platform level because they were hoping that the Allion/Premio can be used to sail through their sedan demands (which did not work).

The new Corolla is a pretty nice drivers car...had the pleasure of driving them the last few weeks. Nice handling..good firm ride...I would say I prefer it a lot more than the new Mazda 3. Only hitch is...it feels like a bloody cave in there...the rear is dark and taping down....my wife is not very tall..5ft2inch and she was bumping her head getting in and out....

The center console light you talk about were always an option in the Allion/Premio (and other models too). It is just that during a certain time they would have been offered as a standard add-on by the dealer. As sales of the twin models died...well...none of the dealers actually cared to offer these add-ons because they were making money in other models and the Allion/Premio is just a waste of everyone's time.

  16. When I advertised my car for sale,on different days, different people came for inspecting it,but around 5 of them came particularly from a one area. All of them quoted an extremely low price for the car.Everyone quoted the same price.None of them inspected the maintainence records or documents.Even without taking the car for a trial...So I thought that the value might have been reduced. But when I checked,my expected price is average, but not much high. But those particular set of people came from the same area on different days quoting the same price made me think that there is something like a hideous buying mafia is going on...Yesterday a bugger came acting like a very truthful person and told that he sold his Axio to open a new shop and therefore he only got one and a half lakh less than my expected price(which is the same price all of them quoted). That bugger acted like a very innocent gentleman...This made me realize that one gang is trying to buy the car for a very low price to sell it again. Most probably it is the reason for not inspecting the records.

      alpha17

      @Car Doctor Mr. I-know-it-all guy,

Let me break it down for you. Your DFCC might be a good car, but the Glory 330 which is indeed from the same manufacturer left a bad reputation in SL due to numerous issues. I myself have driven one, which felt alright to drive, but most of the interior parts seemed to be built not-to-last. For the price you pay(4.2 million at that time) will get you a brand new car with a lot of options. I have not seen a recently registered 330, which implies about the bad reputation it left during the past 2-3 years.

Yes DFCC(I prefer it calling this) Glory 580 might be better in terms of durability than the 330 since most manufacturers try to rectify problems when introducing newer models. But I personally think even the 580 might hold up well against time than a jap or euro vehicle. There are several reasons:

-A car maker cannot increase the quality or reliability(specially the reliability) to that of industry leading manufactures in 2-3 years. I think you might have heard the story of Mercedes Benz from 1995-2009. The company took nearly 1.5 decades to bring the reliability to the level they had 15 years ago, which one of the best car companies in the world. So the quality cannot be leaped unless DFCC shifting the production to Toyota or Honda.

-Those budget oriented car makers’ technology is not up to the level of jap, euro or korean cars. Yes, you car has most options like dual A/C, sunroof, power shutters and power mirrors. But those options were in the old 1995 Pajero. They still don’t have the required technology to develop driver aid systems and safety systems(which have now become a standard for all the vehicles) such as Lane Departure warning, auto brake, auto dimming headlamps and adaptive cruise control.

-CNCAP rating is not up to the standards of JNCAP. Safety is a major concern while most SL people neglect it for the price. But this 5-10 lakhs saving could be the killer in your next accident.

-Testing of vehicles are also not done thoroughly as other manufacturers, and that’s a major assistance to the reduced manufacturing cost.

-Most of the vehicles which came cheap to SL like Kyron,Rexton,Actyon,Baic X25 were sold like hot cakes at the introduction, but later no one bought them. That’s because their bad reliability.

I know you still won’t accept it, because you paid over 6 million to a Chinese vehicle. We as members want to share our experiences honestly, without any bias. We had bad experiences with the 330, and still It’s a relatively new car brand in SL. So we are unable to recommend it to another saying it has all the options. But you people talk like it’s the best SUV in the world giving various price figures compared with other vehicles. A good car cannot be measured by the amount of options offered at the lower price, but it’s the dependability. That’s why the Toyota Corolla has been the best selling car of all time regardless of the lack of options.

I joined to this forum in 2012 as newbie without knowing much about vehicles. I gained so much knowledge and information from here. Now I have gained much more experiences than I were in 2012 after driving every car that I could get my hands on and collecting information. So think wisely before you say pointless things in this forum, and don’t think that you know everything. You owners started saying it’s the best suv and we tried to explain you the truth but still you all would say it’s the best.

  18. The X-Trail seems a nice bargain for the price, starting around 5.4 million, but I'm aware about the gearbox issue. I mean can this issue be rectified permanently or it keeps popping up after every 30k-40k kms?

Well I have a friend of mine, got one of these in 2015, they own a large chain of vehicle dealerships here and have property In Japan, the facts being said as the vehicle was absolutely pristine off the factory, zero mileage, it was black and had all the autech kit as well, they ran the car in their garage plates until a special no was available, I can’t remember what it was, the fella put an infinity sound system as well , so it was not bought to be sold, but as soon as it was touching odd 10000km, they suddenly got rid of it, back then no one had experienced this issue and I was like why ? The fella told me it developed a gearbox issue and apparently the whole model had started issues in Japan, sad part is some poor chap got the end burden but to them business is business. Probably their warranty tried.

@tiv Thanks for your information mate. It’s just the low price and the road presence grabbed me. I heard about the gearbox issue earlier, but never thought that it would be as serious as this until reading some posts and your info. No wonder for their eye catching price tags? Reminds me of the Navara. Then got the chance to drive an Outlander gasoline version which had the Rockford Fosgate audio system. Man that’s the bomb! The sound system alone make me want the car so badly. When driving, it’s okay, but feels heavy and well planted, and absorbs most of the small potholes. But uneven surfaces gives a bit of jolt. Sadly the interior parts feel very cheap and brittle, but almost all the vehicles are PHEV so wouldn’t be a good decision for my weekend usage.

      @sathyajithj99 Both have CVT mate

  19. Is the Merc W212 E200 pre facelift a good choice in terms of reliability? I’ve seen many commenting about Mercs return to the days before 1995 from this car. Seen few with over 150k kms looking rock solid without wear in the interiors.

I’m not expecting Toyota like reliability, but if it has no serious issues costing 2-3 lakhs a time (like the infamous BMW N47 Timing chain failure) I wouldn’t hesitate to take one home just for sheer comfort and prestige! Seems a bargain for 7-8 million than paying for a 2016-2017 Premio. Would buy something like a Viva Elite or WagonR for bad road trips?

It’s a dream to drive and sit in though, I didn’t even notice the hum after driving noisy 3pots and large diesels

      alpha17

I also read about the airmatic problems, so it won’t be there in the E200/E220 as 99% of them has the normal adaptive dampers unless purchased as an option.

@tiv that’s something to think? Thanks mate

    4. alpha17

      alpha17

@tiv is it a diesel one? Seems that 2.2 cdi diesels are prone to this timing chain problem with a replacement cost around 900 euros.

  20. Drove the new Mitsu Eclipse Cross and I’m amazed by the balance between comfort and handling. Certainly comfortable as a car, while being sporty enough to rocket out the corners. Highly recommend over the Honda CRV. The turbocharged 1500cc is much more livelier than what you get in the CRV. Only downside is the fuel economy which is around 12kmpl during long runs and 6-7 round the town.

And how on earth does @hrm no what a cat getting electrocuted sounds like ? (strangely, I do not recall my father in laws car making any weird noises in the winter...damn..now I am going to be tormented by this till I find out....and winter is still a good 2 months away !)

@iRage It's a loud meow sound (when the engine kicks in). Then suddenly it stops (cat dies :( )

I mean there is nothing left when you rev over 4000rpm... @hrm I recall what you say?. When you start the car, engine comes to life and again, after sometime, the engine stops. And the cat thing is totally true?. And one thing I recall...when the engines of the hybrids stop, the silencer makes a sound like farting:D

@naavislade It’s the highest grade of the Axio. During that time period, the car had some options which could only be found in higher end models(Axio is an entry level car). There are 2 variants; Luxel and Luxel Alpha edition.Alpha edition has Radar cruise control,Pre crash safety,6 airbags and auto parking. The first 2 options are not available with the normal Luxel for sure, but not sure about the others. Both have 1800cx engines with tiptronic transmission. As a fact, there might be about less than 20 cars in SL.

  24. What the hell is wrong with Toyota now!!!??? They’re trying to make luxo barges like Lexus LS sportier, while letting the Supra to be designed by the BMW. What a shame!!!

      ajm

without cost-sharing synergies, they cant afford the development cost of rare models. If the Supra was inhouse developed, would cost many times more!

    4. iRage

      iRage

Well...there always have been sportier barges...nothing new....A lot of people think the Supra was Toyota's flagship car  that showcased Toyota's engineering prowess. Not true ! What the Supra was was Toyota's flagship sports car...the big kahuna on top of the speed chain.

The Supra has always been built with borrowed parts...and from guess what !!! ??? luxo barges ! During the first generations the parts came from cars like the sportier Carina, Mark II, etc....then with the Mark IV Supra...even the much loved 2JZ-GTE was actually designed for the Aristo (to compete in JTCC)...so Supra has always been a borrowed tech car and what truly showcased Toyota's engineering capabilities were the barges. The only exception is the LFA where the LFA was Toyota's halo car.  The way they have mapped out the DNA for the current cars is the LFA is the Halo car and the Lexus brand borrow things form that....in the case of the standard Toyota line...the root of the DNA strand starts with the Le Mans winning Hybrid car.

As for cars becoming sportier....well..Toyota's focus has always been to build average cars....they are not exciting nor are they very awe inspiring. However..with just a small tweak in a few small things (lie putting a strut bar or a few more weld points) the car takes on a completely different characteristic.
