  1. Hi Stig, I guess I was lucky and didn't fry the MAF - Anyway the car works fine now, no more trying to die when turning etc. It was good to know that running around without MAF can ruin the O2 sensor. I just ran it only for 2-3 Kms to test, and hope nothing serious happened to the O2 sensors. AJ84 - Hmmm. Did you mean throttle/accelerator cable adjuster by idle adjuster ? This got e-throttle. Anyway I don't think it was a problem with idle - idle was perfect.
  2. Hey Rumesh/NRX, It's a great community we have over here - Thank you. I already spent nearly 11,000 Rs for this (2 Scans, Throttle body cleaning, 2 x 3M cans etc). So thought to check the MAF myself. So I unplugged the MAF - Check engine came ON as I thought but voila the problem seemed to have gone. I ran a bit with the MAF disconnected - all the symptoms I had were gone. When I give gas up to 2500 RPM and take out the foot - RPM comes down nicely and settles at the idle. So I thought this was the culprit. (Funny a garage already cleaned the MAF but they sprayed only a little amount.) I did some research on the internet last night about cleaning MAF, EGR etc - and many had actually advised against using carb cleaner and they recommended a MAF sensor cleaner spray (Which I couldn't find anywhere around.) So settled in for a Wurth carburetor and injector cleaner (Shop guy also advised against some carb cleaners leaving bubble like residue but said this was good..). .Cleaned for few seconds and put it back... No luck - I thought what the heck and emptied half a bottle at the little thingy. It is running fine now, but I'll have to run few hundred Kms to see if the cleaning helped long term. If not I'm going to buy the part and swap it. Since the situation improved after cleaning, I don't think it is with the connectors/wiring too. I'll keep you guys updated. Thanks.
  3. Thanks NRX and Rumesh88. Thanks for the pointers - I'm very sure that Toyota would talk me into doing a full overhaul/tune-up and that's what I'm exactly trying to avoid. Too bad they don't allow us to be with the car and give our opinion on things while they check. I'll check everything you guys told. I just wish this damn thing throws up a code somewhere to make life easy. Rumesh - The strange thing is I can simulate this issue every time (Even though not the stopping of engine). As I mentioned earlier If I press the accelerator to RPM of around 2.5K and take my foot off. It stabilizes on idle only after going well below the idle RPM.. I want to try remove the MAF sensor and see if it try to take a default value (Maybe from MAP but don't know even that exist in Fortuner) and simulate the issue ? Do you think it is a good idea. Also I would like clean the MAF sensor myself again and see - Is carburetor cleaner good enough for this job ?
  4. It's at the normal range - half on the temp meter. Never saw it rise above. Have happened on occasions on very short drives (5 Mins) - when the engine is not that hot as well as on occasions when the engine would have been very hot (Eg : 6 hours of driving)
  5. Hi All, I've a Toyota Fortuner petrol (Auto) 160,000KM. It started to develop an issue about 1 month ago. When under heavy load the engine stalls. When it is started again it runs fine. - It doesn't matter if it the morning or after a long trip - Eg : Ran to Nuwara Eliya without an issue and at the end of the journey engine stalled. - No check engine light. Scanned at Toyota Lanka and another place. No error codes. - Issue happens when AC is On/Of - Not relevant. - As I see the problem.. when the RPM goes down, it suddenly drops going below 700-800 and if there is additional load (Eg : Climbing, Turning) car struggle to keep on and if I don't press the accelerator it dies. - Idle is correct it seems 700-800, Verified by Toyota too. - Can simulate the issue by having the car on Park, pressing the accelerator pedal till RPM 1500 - 2500 and then taking the foot off suddenly. RPM drops suddenly, car shakes and then catches on after struggling(on P). On Drive (D) if same is done specially on a hilly road + turning while braking - It would try to die. - Happens on flat road too - I drive mostly in Colombo. - Throttle body and spark plugs inspected/cleaned at Toyota Lanka -No Change - 3M intake cleaner and 3M injector cleaner applied, Petrol filter checked at another place - No Change. - Pick up etc is fine, Idle is not super smooth but OK (Not very rough/vibrating). - My first thought was MAF sensor. Cleaned it - No difference, replaced with few other MAF sensors from Toyota's (Not the exact model though, Makabass @ work) - Nothing changed (Didn't want to buy a new One without being certain.) - Makabass style of vacuum leak check was done - Will have to redo properly. Planning to put the car @ Toyota lanka, but before spending big bucks, I would like to know what you experts think ? Thank you guys !
  6. There was a hesitation in engadging reverse in the cold starts and a loud thud when it engadge. additionally sometime back a slight cvt judder was there and it was sorted out by changing the internal cvt oil filter. Both were sorted out.
  7. You could also try out Indika Motors at Kollonnawa. He managed to sort out few issues with my CVT and it runs smoothly now.
  8. Guys I found this really cool app and thought to share about it with you. It worked really well with both android and iOs. name of the app is autoblog 360. It provides 360 degree view of almost all new car models (both interior and exterior.) It's a fantastic time killer as well as a nice tool to compare vehicles and their basic options. Try it out.
  9. Car : Honda HRV GH4 JS4 CVT transmission. Problem : On cold starts, moving on D/R from P would need some effort/revving. Few minutes after it starts moving, it's smooth. Garage : Indika Motors at Salamulla, Kolonnawa (It's at the beginning of Gamini Road on IDH road.) The owner (Indika) himself dismantled the CVT box into pieces and I was looking at how he broke the GB into pieces. He was pretty confident in what he was doing and diagnosed the problem quickly. I was offered with a 6 months guarantee for the repair and so far the problem didn't return back (Still only about a week after the repair, so it's too early to say for sure.) Other than that he has few cars he rents out. I got a car from him while the repair was going and later he said that he don't need money for it. (Anyway I've paid him for that as well.) All in all he seems to be a good guy and few of the other guys I've spoken were happy about his work. I wouldn't hesitate to go to him again if needed. Thanks Komi for recommending him earlier..
  10. Hi Guys, "Heard" that Honda Vezel - a Hybrid small SUV from Honda has landed in SL market. I'm currently thinking about an upgrade (Within next 6 months) and considering this vehicle although I'm not a big fan of Hybrids. My other alternative is to extend the budget a bit and go for a 2nd hand fortuner. (Somewhere around 4.0 - 5.5 Mil+). I know that these Two vehicles are of Two classes. Thing I like in fortuner is, it's a 7 seater and I might need the extra seats from time to time. I'm sure that the Honda would be of a more refined drive than the fortuner which based on the Hilux. (I've my mind on Honda CrossRoad as well, but compared to fortuner it's very cramped inside.) - Does anyone have any experience on Vezel (specially guys involved in the trade) ? How is the handling, Is it fun to drive or a boring vehicle (Slow acceleration etc) ? I went through some reviews and those mentions that it only contains a 1.5 iVtec motor coupled with the electric motor delivering 150HP+. All of the reviews I found are from Indian web sites which are usually BS. - I know it is too early to ask such a question, but are there any known issues to anticipate with the technologies involved? (Eg : Gear box issues which are common on earlier Honda CVTs etc) - Does anyone know the exact market price (non permit) of Vezel in SL at the moment ? (I heard that it's between 4.1 - 5.1 mil, but not sure.) - Again a hard question to answer but some of you guys know the market being actively involved in it - As a Hybrid would this become too common in Sri Lanka like Axios, Prius, Insights, Allions etc. - My current ride is perfectly running well, but just thinking of doing an upgrade, since it's getting old. Do you think it is wise to stay few more years until this model becomes main stream and then do a purchase or buy now before the demand/price goes high. I don't have a requirement to buy a car brand new since 2-3 years of use with good maintenance should be negligible wear and tear on a petrol engine. Thanks guys !
  11. Kushan, Sorry for the late reply. Yes m HRV had the same issue, got the TB and IACV cleaned up @ Stafford + fuel system clean up - and it cured it. So far it didn't came up for more than 1 year. Also BTW when you switch off the AC does it become smooth ? But I have also noted that if there are air bubbles in cooling system, it starts to have an effect with the idle.. If you have already cleaned TB, IACV etc .Disconnect the battery or the fuse (Make sure you have the required security codes etc for Car DVD) , press brake for few seconds, reconnect battery , switch off all accessories, keep the car running at P for few minutes - atleast till the radiator fan cycles 2 times.. - This may smooth out the idle .
  12. Hi, If you have cleaned the IACV and TB and if its not still better, could you check the following ; 1. Check coolant level. If coolant is up to the correct level, make sure that you remove any air bubbles trapped. Open the radiator tap when its not too hot, put the AC into heater (running full) and run the car on idle until all air bubbles are gone, and then re-fill the reservoir to the correct limit. 2. Take your car to a battery joint, and do a load test and see if your battery is doing well. If the battery is weak (even if its cranking up etc), it may cause rough idle. If you google about the issue, you could find more information about this.
  13. I agree on Kushan's comments regarding the valve cleaning. As he has also mentioned it is a very satisfying vehicle - Unless the CVT issue is in a severe condition don't worry about it too much.. Every vehicle would have few flaws after running for 100,000 + KM - as long as it could be repaired with a reasonable amount and effort it should be OK (Thats my personal opinion)
  14. Hi, I won't call myself a Honda expert but I do have a fair knowledge with my ride. To check whether the CVT transmission is in a good condition; when the car is stopped in traffic (in D and you are on brake), instead of gently accellerating, do some hard accelleration. If the CVT issue is there, there would be a vibration, and a judder. (Note : This would be from stop to start). However the seller can also temporary stop this issue as there is an oil additive (Could be found at Tech motors panchikawatta) which would cure the problem (atleast temporary).. Below blog from a fellow Sri Lankan conrtains details on the oil http://rayazmuthalif.wordpress.com/2008/07/08/how-to-avoid-cvt-gearbox-failures-in-honda-city-fit-jazz-a-sri-lankan-perspective/
  15. I've been a HRV owner for sometime. Other than the CVT gearbox issue which would arise if the CVT is not taken care properly it is a very nice vehicle. And the Honda D16 engine (1499cc) + transmission provides good response. 4WD system is not good for 4WD adventures but still the 4WD system is good enough to run on beach or on muddy trails - But I don't think most of the SUV users would really dare to put their vehicles to real mud. 4WD is engaged automatically and you don't have any control over it. Mine haven't given me much trouble for the past 2 years. HRV is very reliable and handling is quite good. It is essential that CVT oil is changed on time but it costs about 10,000 Rs per change. If you can find go for a JS4 Engine, GH4 body trim. Nowadays there are many HRVs around so parts are not a big issue but a little bit on the expensive side than common toyota/nissan models. HRV delivers decent fuel economy but don't expect it to be like an alto.. Passenger space is good but boot space is not huge - But in case you want to carry a large load, you can fold the rear seats (which are adjustable). Rear seats are designed for 2 passengers as the seats are adjustable.. Mine has the following options : Climate control AC with digital panel Original navigation with the original ICE - No use as it is Japanese.. But sound quality is good Sun roof (not the sliding type though) Most (if not all) comes with alloy wheels, retractable power mirrors, ABS and EBD, Rear wiper , Power shutters etc. You could find the engine specs etc from www.honda-hrv.info/ Discussions on HRV related issues etc could be found from http://www.hondasuv.com/members/forumdisplay.php?f=6 Please let me know if you have any more queries, I'll try to help. All in all its a nice ride - but old.
