  1.  You guys remember Californican?

If he was around AL now he would be having a blast with all these hybrids and electric cars coming down to SL now

  2. I guess our tax people haven't yet realised yet that car manufacturers are downsizing the engines and turbo charging them. :D

They seem to focusing on engine capacity based tax rates :D

      I hope they don't do that :D

    3. terrabytetango

      terrabytetango

they will. cos the new "must have" car will be the 1 litre Civic which is sold (and made) in the UK.

    4. Magnum

      Magnum

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. Everybody is eyeing the new 1L Civic. Soon they are going to notice this loop hole :D

  3. Sometimes on the road you would see vehicles which have one headlamp that stays on high beam at all times while the other one is in low beam.

I heard this is done(not sure if intentionally or unintentionally) by using the wrong bulb type.

This should have been on that N16 thread lol

You connect both high and low beam wire?

    3. The Stig

      The Stig

yes but it will put strain on the wiring so they might melt.

Also the bulb will produce excess heat and damage the housing.

    4. Magnum

      Magnum

I guess these are the kind of vehicles which end up in flames on the highway

  4. Does IOC and Ceypetco share the same fuel? Or does IOC import separately from India?

    1. tiv

      tiv

Separately  bought in, refined together, again separetely sold, experts pitch in please

    2. Magnum

      Magnum

I see..so the fuel quality could be different?

    3. trish_auto

      trish_auto

Import separately. But quality controlling and approvals are done through CPC .

IOC is currently holding the permit for importing, distributing and selling only.

  5. Have you guys tried the original Toyota air for tyres? Makes a massive difference in comfort and handling

Good thing you guys are also getting only genuine air for the tyres!

Do get it only from the agents

  6. I remember someone here asking why new Toyota cars have a vertical raised up line on each side of the roof. I found out why, it's to do with aerodynamics

  7. Do fog lamps come with a height/beam adjustment?

      Magnum

Will give it a try next time I'm in Sri Lanka

The low beam is auto adjusted and the high beam is fixed I guess.

    3. tiv

      tiv

The deal is in a unlit pitch black road and Sri Lankan setting,

Auto adjusting kind of makes a mess of things, especially pot holes messing the system alignment you end up losing usable low beam for a few km each time,

To add to this if it has Auto dimming or built-in setup to lower the beam based on the oncoming lights,

Then a local Mad max style mudalali express comes with all 24 lights on without a care in the world floats past you while singing his horn and all those sophisticated electronic bits leave you in low bim dipped to the max and you the human component partially blinded by there hideous glare!

    4. Magnum

      Magnum

I thought auto adjustment only adjusts the beams when the vehicle is loaded up at the back and the front becomes lifted up

Yeah don't think auto high beam is practical in Sri Lanka

There are some idiots who have 1 light as high beam all the time as well.

  8. Earlier models of BMW such as E36 and Mercedes such as W123/124 had anti glare side mirrors but newer models don't seem to have that. Any idea why? I'm not very familiar with European cars.

    1. terrabytetango

      terrabytetango

No, but Mercedes W124 took side mirrors very seriously, with the larger passenger side one, and even base W124s having a power passenger mirror while the driver's one was manual.

    2. The Stig

      The Stig

Newer higher end euros have electrochromatic  auto dimming mirrors even on the side mirrors. I think they are offered as options on base models but most people dont get them. And manufacturers dont sell the blue tint anti glare mirrors anymore cause they want customers to pay more.

    3. Magnum

      Magnum

      @The Stig that makes sense

I guess it was standard back then which is why you could find most cars with them.

I read somewhere once Lexus entered the markert it became quite difficult for BMW and Mercedes to put forward a price that matches with Lexus especially in the US. I assume to keep the price down they started turning standard features into extras and selling a base car with simple features at a lower price

  9. Its about time admins check threads before they are posted. Someone had created multiple threads advertising fake stuff. On top of that some people open threads without searching, there were 2 new Hiace threads recently when there's already a thread with loads of discussion.

    1. vag2

      vag2

anither idiot has just created a thread to brag about his Acqua fuel efficiency while going downhill ?

    2. Davy

      Davy

User accounts do have to be approved before they can be used to post content. If not for that, we would have seen much much worse spammer activity on the forum IMO. As soon as I saw those posts, I reported each one of them (and I think everyone else should use the "report" feature whenever they notice spamming, name calling (see above reply), advertising etc.).

Mods and Admins can't really keep an eye on the forum 24/7 IMO (they too have lives). So as a community, it's our responsibility to help them keep it running smooth. :)

@vag2, If you look at the date on that thread, it was created a year ago. Also, I don't think you can call it idiotic. It's just ignorance.

  10. Michelin or Pirelli or Continental?

@terrabytetango Makes sense, not sure how Maxxis are but according to consumer reports Toyo doesnt seem to be doing that well.
Btw didnt your Axio come with Michelin?

    3. terrabytetango

      terrabytetango

Nope, I think most JDM compact cars come with Toyo or Yokohama. Michelin is reserved for high performance tires offered by the euro brands.

So now we know the true story behind these so called "white vans" everyone was afraid of

  12. Some people are going bonkers with engine tune up and its become bit of a hype. How often should we do an engine tune up? or should it only be done if you notice something wrong?

  13. Guys! any idea how they come up with the fee for annual license fee?

    1. Crosswind

      Crosswind

It's a highly complex formula that uses a discrete mathematical algorithm called fourier transforms, calculated by one Mr. Samaraweera at the parliament of Sri Lanka.

  14. Toyata Lanka is selling a Hiace with 5L engine, I thought that engine went out of production long ago

Don't think the 5L model is allowed to be sold in Japan due to emission restrictions. Plus 200 series being heavier than the 100 series I can imagine how underpowered it would be

      @terrabytetango whats a ROW model?

    3. iRage

  15. Why are government vehicles from Mitsubishi or used to be from Mitsubishi?

      Jor-el

It's still from Mitsubishi. Recently they bought a fleet of L200 sporteros for Municipal councils and other government offices. Police highway patrol divisions use Lancer EXs. CEB uses Mitsubishi fuso trucks

Maybe an agreement between UNIMO and the government (They might have *cough* greased some wheels *cough*)

    3. iRage

      iRage

Basically who ever wins the tender will supply the vehicles. I suppose Mitsubishi were able to meet the basic specifications and be price competitive.

  16. Mobil or Castrol or Toyota genuine engine oil for diesel?

Don't use normal compound on the glass if you don't know how to do it properly. You will scratch it. There are water stain removers that you can buy (or get someone to mail it from Japan). Maguiars water spot removed used to be available in SL. It is a lot more user friendly and less prone to permanent scratching of the glass. Granted it will require more elbow grease than using compound.

  21. If you leave a tire idling after using them for a while, do they become useless?

    1. Kavvz

      Kavvz

Depends on how long it was stored for and how...

    2. TarragonTV

      TarragonTV

Tires expire after about 5 years of its manufactured date. No matter whether it's been on road or home, after that time, tires are no longer reliable. The manufactured date is printed in every tire.

Does washing often take off the wax?

    3. iRage

      iRage

Progressively yes....depends on the shampoo you use as well. If you use something like AUTOGLYM, Maguiars, Turtle Wax, etc...the recommendation is that you use their wash and wax shampoos. Been using Maguiars for sometime now and with the wash and wax the wax does seem to stay a bit longer than when I would just wax and use a normal shampoo.

    4. Magnum

      Magnum

I use a japanese shampoo(cant remember the name) and it has a wax like compound too.

  23. Any idea which euro standard fuel we have in SL?

    1. YZF-R1

      YZF-R1

Euro-III is available at IOC sheds (so they say).

  24. I know ceypetco super diesel has only max 10ppm sulfur. Is IOC the same?

    1. Crosswind

      Crosswind

Yes. IOC buys all fuels except Euro III from Ceypetco
