  1. Why do some people overstate the fuel economy figures when advertising a car?

Some figures are so off to the extent you start doubting whether it would be a safe purchase.

When I took my CHR to the hospital for the first time, almost all the doctors were asking "malli, oke thel keeyak karanawada?"

Nobody bothered to ask "how is the handling? how is the power, comfort? What are the new features?"

Typical Sri Lankan mentality. It's almost like the number of kilometers per litre a vehicle does decides its market value.

@sathyajithj99 There was a poll on FB regarding the most important feature when purchasing a vehicle, the highest vote was for fuel economy

I wrote this on one of the threads as well..fuel economy is so high in importance in SL because 90% of the people buy cars that they cannot afford. So when they spend a lot of their income on paying the lease..they hardly have any money left for living life. Even if the companies give a vehicle allowance the fact still applies. So they want to spend as little as possible on fuel and maintenance

Then the another dimension is that we Sri Lankans LOVE a bargain. At a bargain we would even buy a heap of dog $h**. So exaggerated fuel figures are away of showing off what a bargain you are getting. In the same line....we measure human by the what we have rather than who we are. As such we always yearn to have the shinier, larger, newer car than what you always have. When you can't afford to get that....then exaggerated fuel figures become the justification for them to why they are using the car they already have.
