I'm looking for a car that looks decent, offers at least average comfort, and can be sold without much effort when reselling.

So, the story is, I'm a 26-year-old person from Gampaha, and I want to provide a car ride for my mother that I own before she passes away.

Nissan Sunny FB15 - common car, Nissan prices have not skyrocketed as opposed to other brands. Common car with ample parts availability. Fairly comfortable, and not bad-looking (personal opinion)  For your need this is the simplest and most painless option. Get a mechanic or a dedicated place to examine the car. Do some bargaining your budget should be enough. Resale should not be an issue either. An EX-Saloon (grade) with the 'old shell' should set you back around 3.2 Mill at max. Keep some cash for any repairs (car is around 25 years old now) and you're good to go.

A 2012+ Viva Elite would tick most of your boxes

A manual would be possible. Auto's are touching 4 Mill now and some of them are converted (and prone to issues)

Have you performed the Basic diagnosis like Dry Wet Compression Test etc. to determine whether the Engine is actually needs a rebuild?

This would be the way to go - I hope OP has taken the car to a proper mech and done a compression test. What I hear is that in the past people almost always tried to repair/rebuild engines. In recent times with the availability of recon engines garages tend to go for the more easier -'replace' method. Replace should be a last resort.

Of course these are not 'new' engines they're usually engines taken off wrecking yards. Having said that I need to mention that from what I have seen when I was engine hunting for the Starlet usually (i cannot stress the importance of the word usually - yes there could have been an engine a sumo wrestler used to throw at his opponents )a 15 YO Engine that has run in Japan and a 15YO engine that has run in Sri Lanka are in entirely two different conditions :)

Ok then here you go, I was following one yesterday on my way home the guy was driving a bit odd as he used to accelerate suddenly and slow down to a crawl at times (sometime too careful) only when I overtook it I saw that it was an undertaker.

    Triv001.jpg

I was going to go with a brand that has a LEGACY in the rallying circuit. But I realize it's not the same. Next guess is deduct 40 from the number of the beast and you have the model?

Maybe he was driving slow cos he was a bit nervous? What if you are driving a hearse and suddenly someone taps your shoulder and says 'malli drop me off here thank you' ?

They gave me some nonsensical lecture about how older cars are better than the new Civics and they don't like the new Civic at all since it has way too many gadgets and people who spend a lot of money on things like this, Benzes, BMW's, etc. just have way too many expectations; apparently the main point of a car is to get from point A to B. Ignored the idiot who told me that and asked him why the Brake Hold was struggling when downhill. He was clueless and said that it's normal

This sadly is the Honda agent's mentality - they are still living in the EK3/EG8 age - I may have said this before but when you take it to them they are always like this is normal :D

The "Hub" and Sta****d are at two ends of the spectrum. I personally have not been to the 'hub' but my friends have. And from their experience, they are somewhat paranoid .

Customer 'I noticed the oil level has dropped slightly'

Hub : 'Your engine is done for replace the Engine. Replace the gearbox and replace the windshield wipers'

    at the agents

Customer: ' My engine oil level is at zero, the engine is overheating and there's smoke coming out of the engine bay'

St****d : ' Aiyo that is normal sir, here pour some kerosene into the oil filler' and proceed to throw a bucket of water to cool down the engine.

To replace my brake pads and the coolant tank  I went to this place in Yakkala who mostly deal with Honda's  - I'm generally happy with the little work they did  will not mention names as per forum rules.

    Mitsubishi L200 (Triton)

visually very similar but the small clue is in the mirrors.

    image.png.435c815f52eb6452698102c37c9ed301.png our suspects mirror.

I will add another clue - the marque is not quite famous for pickup trucks and this particular models' chassis is based on another very common pickup truck.

This will hopefully be interesting. Coming from a state owned manufacturer who used to build vehicles for other brands in their country. The previous vehicles used to be copies of other brand vehicles which they used to manufacture with very long names (letters followed by numbers), I was fortunate enough to drive two of those in Sri Lanka (a petrol double cab and a Diesel Single Cab) of which one is still being used by a leading manufacturer agent as their parts vehicle. Later on I think around 4-5 years ago Sri Lanka Police got a fleet of vehicles from this manufacturer as a grant maybe?

    Triv01.jpg

The State owned manufacturer would be BAIC.

the car in your pic would be a BAIC X55 ?

ewly acquired French plant of an American car manufacturer. As a result, it was sold under both manufacturers' names.

This is the biggest clue. Simca took over Ford Europe's factory and started making the Vedette which was also marketed as a Ford.

Ok so since no one has answered, would either @matroska or @iRage please give the answer.

@iRage - please do the honors and take the stage. Gummy and I discussed this car before so me answering it would not at all count 🙂

Which one would you recommend? If a Petrol car, is it much to expect at least 15Km/l?

Apart from fuel efficiency, the only thing We look for is rear leg space.

You will probably not get 15KM/L on a normal Internal-combustion petrol car. Maybe in a tiny kei-car but those come with very little rear leg space.

If you do mostly weekend outstation driving the best option is to go for a slightly large(ish) Sedan. A corolla 141 will be a safe and solid bet - will do 10-12 KMPL on a long drive. Hybrids make sense for daily drivers but why go through the hassle for a mostly weekend driver. Allions Premios are a bit overpriced but if you can find one in your budget then it's a good choice. Other options - Bluebird Sylhpy G11, Lancer CS3/Maybe an EX.

If you must go for a hybrid

    - The FIT GP1 feels a lot more nippy and fun compared to the Prius.

    - The Prius is comfier, and has more rear leg space and the rear seats are better - the GP1 has the magic -seats that can be lifted up so they're not the most comfy. But it's a very practical car specially to haul stuff and it has insane interior space for its size.

    - Things that commonly go wrong in the GP1  are *usually* cheaper and easier to fix than in the Prius.

[please focus on the words commonly and usually - I don't want to be sued :D ]

    -Prius is better on fuel.

used the engines from the Beret/Florian (sedan/coupe) and Wasp (pickup) of the period

from a  particular maker who is more known for their reliable diesel engines, specially in a local context.

Nissan fb 15 per litter howmany kms done?

as others have mentioned above something around 8-10 kmpl will be what to expect. Will be better outstations/highway driving.

Ok then here goes, I would certainly ban @matroska of replying for 24 hours on this as we discussed on this car. From the weird world of oriental cars, and no its not a kit car it was built for the youth of a certain generation. Hints of the famous British mark maybe. The history of this car in Sri Lanka is a bit grey I dont know how many are running around, but can confirm there is one in the country of which the owner is also confused.

Maybe @iRage can share some insights.

Here goes then I am being generous here,

Only issue is they are a bit noisier than the Oem's.

I have noticed this - my current combination of yokohama blue earth's and brembo's are a tad bit noisier than the original Michelins and the OEM brake pads.

Has anyone else had their brake pads wear out so quickly though? It’s ridiculous that it only lasts like 3-4 years

I assume you do a lot of city driving? if my memory serves me correct yours is the sonic-grey one that's there in the office parking lot at Dematagoda? Break pads do wear out relatively soon. I've gone with Brembo for my 2nd set. Also the braking on this model is next level. Maybe a trade-off :D

is she worth all this trouble and cost?

Well yeah - It's always a matter of choice isn't it? I mean I've had to replace the A/C condenser at just 3 years into ownership (that's more to do with the gas and the local conditions). If we look at the fairly newish models (less than 10 years) all the variants available in Sri Lanka have some sort of niggle - Aquas,Axios,Vezels,Graces,Fits (and the Tiny turbo-engined Euro's.) If you want to have a taste of a newish car with some bells whistles some fancy techie bits and good driving dynamics, (yes the 1L turbo and CVT combo is nothing to write home about but throw this into a winding road , sharp bends and you'll be grinning ear to ear) , is still budget friendlier than a euro to maintain, returns acceptable fuel figures( albeit on octane 95), and doubles up as a very practical family car - the choices are rather limited

On 3/28/2024 at 7:50 AM, iRage said:

I wonder if the non-1000cc Civics are also having the same level of niggles come up (and I mean actual issues and not the whole "known to", "possibly can" situations which every engine on the planet has but actual things that do happen). I suppose it is a case of "gone are the good old days".

AFAIK  the 1.5 L Variant does not have this belt issue.  - the 1.0 engine is a wet belt.

    Look for service records.

This model (141) is known for compressor issues around 100k kms

Also CVT transmission issues if not properly maintained. Atleast CVT oil should have been changed in every 40k kms

    Dashboard cracks

and those dashboard cracks are quite prominent as well - I've seen many fleet cars with this issue.

What to look for when you are buying a nissan hb 12 station wagon diesel

Diesel swaps were a common practice in the 90's so first of all check if the car was an original diesel.(even if it was not - a proper swap will not be an issue but advised to practice caution)  I'd assume the engine is an CD17 if it were original. Check for the usual, check for blow by (google for it), check if the vehicle pulls well, gear shifting. Ideally get a diesel mechanic to check it. When it comes to body the usual checks need to be done : corrosion, interior etc.

I'm planning to buy Aqua 2012 or Fit GP 1 2013. Which one is better in terms of comfort and maintenance.

I found an Aqua for for 6.3 Mm with battery and ABS replaced while fit for 6.0mn without battery replaced.

Need your help choosing the best

when was the battery replaced in the Aqua? The biggest pain points with the Aqua is the battery and the ABS.

The GP1 is more of an old school mild-hybrid that has lesser troubles (oil burn issue aside)

Aqua will be more economical on fuel, be a bit more faster on a straight line.

The GP1, will have a bit more bells and whistles, larger with more cabin space and storage space. Less fuel efficient.
