2C Turbo - Yay or Nay?
-
I used to recommend Perodua's particulary the Viva Elite to people asking what to buy for around 3 Mil. But not anymore. Now they're hitting the 4 Million mark

@matroska And the price difference between 92RON and 95RON has hit 98LKR/l
Considering permanent switch to 92RON, some Knock Retard comparisons between the two and if there's not much of a difference, I'm gonna switch to 92RON.
-
@matroska nothing on the outside, no strange noises or anything like that but the knock sensor is retarding the ignition timing quite a bit it seems. This is on a 100% 92RON tank
-
Good bye Rear wheel drive and stick shift! Let go of the Lancer.
-
Pretty sure this is @PreseaLover s handiwork while shuttling between Sweden and Germany.... trying to take revenge on the buyyas who did him injustice during his 90's shitbox hunt.
-
At a point where I might have to do away with project cars/beaters/shitboxes and move onto a less-dramatic reliable second car on a budget - what does the A/L community suggest?
- Show previous comments 3 more
-
Less dramatic more reliable would be the path that I took as a stop gap solution. But finding a good one is difficult as they are also hacked, and to everyone taste. @Supra_Natural was asking why I made myself do that when he saw about my round the country trip.
-
Bumped into a pretty decent EE80 Sprinter - always love that front. Tempted to trade with the lancer
-
It seems people still do post on Autolanka classifieds. There's a decent looking K10 for sale
-
FB keeps suggesting me to follow a group called 'SL DEFENDER ලන්කාවෙ ඩිෆෙන්ඩ(ර්) යක්කු' and yes as the name suggests it's full of cringeworthy retardedness
-
The current generation has ruined whatever "regard" that the vehicle had. They were capable off roaders and spent their free time with the mechanic but now they've become shorts for instagram with a bus song describing Kim Kardashian in Sinhalese, in the background with a lot of shaa, sira, adoh, ganing bung comments. Not forgetting the loss in regard to driving etiquette on the roads when driving these. They go swerving with horns, lights assuming its a rocketship with ground clearance, and then get raped by a prius carrying 4 tourists to nuwara eliya..
At times when I see these I feel its time to leave Sri Lanka.
-
While the starlet remains 'kota uda' as it's bodywork gets restored - I'm galivanting around in a Lancer 'box' with a slightly dodgy gearbox : should I do a write up? Hijack a thread? Blog post?
-
Noticed several - aquas going around with their windows down during the weekend - I don't think A/C has a LOT of effect on fuel consumption in modern hybrids or modern cars as opposed to the older cars.
Also the heat will wear out the battery soon. I get we are all range anxious now due to the fuel crisis but still might be good to evaluate the pros and cons- Show previous comments 2 more

The thing is are our citizens are not aware of the consequences of their actions and they aren't aware of the systems in place and blindly follow others in herd mentaility.
These guys would ruin their batteries pretty soon with the lack of cold air and added dust. These Axios and Aquas have their battery cooling air vent under the backseat and the the cool air pumped into the cabin via the AC system is then sucked into cool the hybrid batteries through this vent. Even under normal use (with windows up and AC running) these models end up with error codes and clogged fans that draw the cool air from the cabin and premature battery degradation.
It's a pity that these days with the roads deserted these hybrids could return around 30kmpl with AC on if driven sensibly but these guys are on track to ruin their rides.
-
The first victims of the fuel crisis are unsurprisingly the barges - everyone seems to be selling them and the classifieds and facebook groups are flooded with them. Prices are dropping rapidly and I really really hope a few enthusiasts get hold of them for a reasonable price else it would be really sad to see them rust away 😞

@MaleCortana..even if they do pry it off your hands...don't worry....wadiya dura yana ekak naha...thel wadiya naha ne...
-
@iRage a 75 liter tank on the contrary XD
-
So the Starlet was finally taken in to get all the bodywork sorted out, including the paint - The actual color code of the car was the 80's Toyota white (040) - however some previous owner had painted it gold and updated the CR - I'm pondering to go with white or gold
-
Not the best of times ... but still 1.4 Liters of RWD goodness might just cheer me up ... if I get to pump a full tank ... 😶

Thanks guys! Actually The Starlet is still with us - my Dad uses it and while mechanically in top form has now developed a bit of corrosion - particularly on the floor board, has a significant dent on the passenger door (someone knocked while it was parked - probably a bike), and is need of a complete paint job - I bumped into this on the classifieds for a relatively ok price - and the temporary decommission of the starlet seemed to be a good enough excuse to get my hands on a manual after a really really long time.
-
Well at least they haven't blocked this site - it's testing times and automobiles are grounded mostly with the ongoing fiasco. But there's a treasure trove of knowledge, experience and anecdotes in this forum - maybe time to fire up at least some fun threads - like we did during the pandemic lockdown #1 in 2020?
-
It's high time I attended to the corrosions in the Starlet and the cosmetics - while I'm at it should I swap in a Turbo ??? Turn it into a proper sleeper?
-
I am sort of with @MrCat..but also not...
What he says is true...but then it also depends on the size of the turbo, how much boost you are going to be running and how you are going to make sure that the power delivery is close to linear as possible (big boosts of power is not going to do anything except keep you in one place and rip your tires off and then throw he car around a bit...so to what mrCat mentioned). Which is also why the big old turbo with plenty of lag is a problem...you will literally have nothing until boost builds up and when it does it will slap you in the rear end. If you are looking at dropping in the engine and turbo from a Glanza or GT, then putting the power down won't be too bad..but then you won't be putting down all the power as well; and it won't be a pleasant put-down as well. So yeah....the final tune will make a huge difference.
The suggestion for a high reving engine is attractive because of the gradual build up of power/torque.
At the end of the day it depends a lot on how you want the car to feel and what you will be using it for.

Curious whether any diesel versions of the Galant Sigma made it to SL. Every diesel Sigma out there seems to run a Toyota 1C or a 2C.
- Show previous comments 1 more
-
@iRage yeah makes sense - despite almost of all of them being 1982 models the diesels have numbers 31,32,64,65,325 so they were converted at various times - at least there are few original petrols out there as well.
-
It could be that they got converted as they passed hands with time; either because the owners thought the engine was too thirsty or broken to an extent that they didnt want the original fixed.
Sadly a lot of larger capacity cars have seen this fate..Crowns, Gloria/Cedric/Laurels, etc....too bad the process to actually put it back to original and re-register with older numbers simply is not there.
-
Back after a while - what's up folks? Things seem awfully quiet here.

Hello @matroska! Hope you remember me😌
-
@Ruslan it's badly in need of a paint job and there's a bit of corrosion to be sorted out - which reminds me i need to write the rest of the blog @sathyajithj99 sadly yes it seems cars are just getting exchanged between buy-and-sell people and due to the cost of parts and labor no new projects either. @alpha17 in fact I do good sir...good to see at least some of the members are visiting the forum time to time. During the lockdown we had some interesting banter but I guess times are tough and people have a lot of problems. 😕
-
I'm not sure I've said this before - but time and time again I realize that when you're sad, frustrated or emotionally down someway or the other a quiet drive can always fix things for you...

@iRageYes. I'm Ok. My mother was in hospital for over 3 weeks and eventually passed away last Monday. The correct music, and taking the longer, more scenic routes home helped ease the anxiety and after her passing it soothed the pain.
-
@matroska so sorry to hear that ❤️
They say death is the only certainty in life but it is something you can never get prepared for. Enjoy the long drives until the pain gets erased by joyful memories.

Need Advice or an Idea : My friends house was burgled last night and the burglars made off with the Smart Key to his GP1. The grey imported GP1's usually come with 1 smart key and a regular key. The risk is that the car is now vulnerable to be stolen at any time by the burglars. Is reprogramming the car to a new smart key with a new unlock code possible? Any one faced a similar situation?

Don't know if the guy can re program but there is a chap near Nugegoda - about 100-200 Meters passing the bridge going towards Maharagama. It's on the left hand side and there is an apartment complex Opposite the shop. Sadly don't have his number. Did u try Pet#o or Advance Audio - Dehiwala ?
Rs. 500,000/- ??? My %$#@*&

What's up with larger sedans and interior abuse? Most of the 90's Cefiro, Bluebird, Camry/Vista interior bits look like a bunch of sabre toothed tigers had an orgy inside them. This is not the case with the Sunny's Corolla's Starlets and Marches *most of the time*

@MaleCortana Is right, lack of parts is the major plus these cars are hard to come by in Japan too to get the parts. Ours wasnt in a good nick when we got it 17 years ago.
-
Thats a clean U13 @Magnum
@MaleCortana you're right ...other than the spares issue - being a non buyya car people are less likely to have resale in mind. Some people buy without proper financial means to maintain due to the lower price and then leave the cars to rot. It's sad actually- most of these cars have options well before their time and in good nick would be an absolute joy to drive it's a shame they have been abused like this.
-
@MaleCortana is spot on...it is the context the car is used in and owned in.
As for parts, @Magnum mentioned that it is hard to find parts even in Japan...well..yes but no but yes...back in the day, interior parts, sets were easy to come by back in the day...but now (which is when all these cars actually need the parts) they are hard to come by as there are no old cars in Japan. they've all been shipped outside to countries like Africa (where these old barges have a HUGE market). The lack of parts apply for any old car. Been stocking up parts for my Corolla Wagon....it took 7 months for me to find a set of headlights, grill and tail lights ! On the other hand..there were plenty available in SL...used Japanese ones and new Thai reproductions.

Anyone recommend a upholstery place /fiber shop that can re-upholster a car door - the vinyl bits are warped, cracked and basically hideous - have a look below it's worse when you see it up close
