  1. Well for one it's running an 80's Nissan Caravan Engine. RMV can be a bit liberal in naming their 'Models' Though it says Defender If i'm not mistaken the Defender 90 Series started in 1982 or 1983. This could probably be a 1980 Series 3 fitted with a Nissan Engine (which is a common replacement for Series 3 in SL) and underwent many changes over the years including the front grille and other bits and pieces. In reality even if this car could talk it would not be able to tell what it exactly is unfortunately.
  2. These 'Warranties' from car sales point you towards places like c***point etc. If I were you I'd rather get it checked by Staf*ord or the so-called 'Hub' in Maligawatta. Word of advice - these two are at two extreme ends. The Hub folk are a bit over-enthusiastic and for the folk at St**ford - they don't try to rip you off but can be a little too 'ah that's normal' for example if you go to the 'Hub' and say 'There's a strange noise coming when I break' they will immediately ask you to replace the entire gearbox, break pads, all 4 wheels and do a wheel alignment. As for St***ord take a car that is belching out black smoke and possibly some flames coming from under the hood they'll throw some water at it and say - 'That's normal sir'
  3. did you check with the RMV website using the info what this number is actually registered as. I'm no expert on this but this doesn't add up - this screams out frankenstein.
  4. Yes but 10 years is a really long time. I really don't think the country would be an issue. and see you sold an INDIAN car for higher price than you got it. But then again take into mind inflation as well. If you really love the car I'd say just go ahead. And this is for 10 years why would you spend 10 years with a car you don't like in the first place? ?
  5. Since we're onto the whole resale value thing I want to add a small observation. For over a decade sri lanka have had this curious obsession with the Allion/Premio range. The 260 was described by some as and here I quote some exact words " like having a fixed deposit" . "wikunanna dammahama polimata enne ganna" " idamak gattha wage" etc. BUT, take a look at the quick site at the number of them waiting to be sold for days and days ...there's one in Moratuwa that's been for sale for about 3 weeks now. People have maybe changed their preferences or they're considering the numerous turbo-charged options they get for the same price as a 6-7 year old car. So really you can't predict the market - a reasonable price. clear records, zero bullshit, and good maintenance will USUALLY fetch you the best possible value for your ride be it today in 2 years or 10 years.
  6. If you're ready to use it for 10 years resale should be the least of your concerns. Are you really concerned about re-sale value ? 10 years is a looong time actually. Roll the clock back 10 years 1. There was a civil war in this country. 2. A certain terrorist leader was alive. 3. The Gen2 Priuses just started reaching and people ran away when they saw one. 4. Nissan Sunnies - FB14,FB15,s N16's were considered great cars. 5. Nokia phones were the best selling mobile devices. 6. I was still a student and weighed 8 kg less. 7. 512 KBPS SLT ADSL was "da bomb" the point is in 10 years time maybe sri lanka will have stopped importing cars altogether. maybe due to inflation your Yaris will fetch 625 Million instead of 62.5 million (that IS the price right?) there will be many crazy tax rules , maybe Mahendran will be back as the CBSL governor. and god forbid but we all might even be dead so dont think about reasale but think about daily running as the others mentioned.

  11. The new swift's a sweet ride. If you don't travel on poor roads would be a good option. Baleno's the more 'mommy' version of it but has a bit of more space inside. I'm not really sure if you can get an A1 for that price. and what on earth is this ?   12. I really don't think anyone was concerned about the environment in the first place. There was a tax cut on hybrids (actually there still is) and back then for the price of an abused sh*t-pile with wobbly wheels and yellow headlamps and the sh*t stains of the previous owners (whose name incidentally was not on the CR cos hey its been on open papers for 13 years) kid you could get a 2/3 year old car with lots of bells and whistles that was not a Indian tin-can-on-wheels - the choice was simple.

  14. Hi. Cannot comment on fuel economy for older cars since the figures vary drastically for each individual car. I recommend Famila/323( ford laser :same car), charade, K10, AT150. Much as I simply adore the uno practically it would require a lot of attention. Also would suggest the DX wagon. You can get a really good one for that price. And read this thread Subscribe to old car groups on FB. Keep some cash in hand for some repairs. Dont just chase one model visit a few and see what really suits you. Pay attention to body and interior (cos its tough to sort out those parts than the mechanics) Happy hunting.
  15. Hi. First of all let's edit the title of the post shall we? This is a very vague title. Rename it to something specific like Honda City vs Sunny N16 or something. Hard to say "Better" without specific criteria. Well the sunny n16 itself is a rather nondescript car but it will be a tad bit comfier than the city ( which i assume is the city that came in 2000/2001) As for selling yours can't really say all depends on the YOM, options and condition of the car. P.S i think by n17 you mean the facelifted n16.

  18. Your (3) requirement is hard to fulfil - no one can predict how the market will be in 5 years time. Even the so-called "market" cars like the aging toyotas are not so marketable these days. Check the number of cars that are left unsold in clasifieds each day price getting reduced. Hybrid : If you must you can get a decent insight for this budget - get a battery report done by St****d Motors before you buy . Fuel cons is around 12-13 KMPL in city again depends on how you drive Mild Hybrid : Wagon R 2014/2015 Slightly used. With hundreds and thousands of them on the roads i think it will be hard to re-sell in the future to be honest. Supposed to be good on fuel. Kei: Assorted Kei's of various shapes and sizes if you're ok with having a pokemon on 4-wheels as your daily driver. Non Hybrid Hatches [in reality expect fuel figures of 10-12 kmpl in city] 2010 Honda Fit GE6 : Excellent car with tons of space inside for its size. Joy to drive. 2009+ Mazda Demio : A bit small but again a fun car to drive. 2009+ Suzuki Swift (Locally known as Beetle Swift) : Cramped rear, zero-space boot but a very peppy car. Slightly Thirsty for fuel. 2008+ Toyota Vitz : A local favorite. OK car. Not my cup of tea but many like it. Sedans (~10 KMPL City) Mazda 3/Axela : 2004+ ...you can source a 2007 if you try hard. Lancer CS : good option as you can get a much newer one. 2008ish Nissan Tiida 2008+ Haven't quoted any Euro's cos I know jacks##t about them. But others will chip in. Keep your options open and look for a few specimens. Decide what really strikes you with a 'wow' and go for it. Don't buy dilapidated scrap-heaps thinking of resale value. You will regret it later.
  19. Yes there is a risk. What you can do is - source a car with clean and good records preferably Toyota maintained (don't go for the ones serviced at the nearby joint) then take it to Toyota and get it inspected including battery report etc. This actually applies to other cars too not just hybrids.
  20. Ahh the sri lankan measure of a cars success ?? I have a cousin who uses a 2017 Allion and im pretty sure it does about 12 or 13. Your doc.friends maybe put surgical spirit as a fuel additive?? ? That car looks mean machan. Im a bit of an old school car fan but still having travelled in the CHR i feel it's a good overall package.

  22. Yes it is. Still quoted for OPs beneifit cos Ive heard SriLankans refer to the CHR as Jeep(average people) and SUV.(posh peeps- not crossover mind you but just SUV) Example: " ara dostharala ehema gennana jip eka" " Machaang bugger bought that new Toyota suv- whats it called men?"

  24. Sticking to the two brands you mentioned If you want a relatively well seasoned model that is popular on our shores you can go for an Axio hybrid in the mid 60's. It's a nice car but it lacks that little bit of X-factor. Honda Grace is another contender . Another 'safe' but boring option would be an unreg Allion ( I think you can get it for that budget) Two other kind of 'different' cars I can think of is the Civic and the CHR. Of the Two you can get a SR grade Civic for below your budget(~5.9 M) The EX grade is more expensive. I have suggested the CHR here as a 'car' since in reality it's just a over hyped hatchback. If you take your specific criteria. [2] Not sure if the Civic can fulfill these requirements its very new and we don't quite know how the 1L Turbos fare in our conditions. [3] Again the Civic is a bit low. The CHR has a bit of ok ground clearance. [4] Just a word on the CHR regarding this, Despite being a Crossover-based vehicle its awfully cramped inside specially if you're a tall bloke. [5] None of these new vehicles will give you headaches for the near future. Just be aware of how the Turbocharged Civic will fare though I really don't expect it to throw up any nasty surprises.
