1. I picked up the habit out of necessity. Once on a long trip my car had a problem that when I slow down and stop at traffic the engine would die, unless I kept giving it a little gas. So to overcome this problem as soon as the car came to a stop I would put it on N, put the hand brake and keep revving the engine. That got me home until I was able to take it to my mechanic and fix the problem. Now even though the problem is fixed I keep doing that, partly for that reason and partly because it gives me some thing to fiddle with while waiting in traffic. I should probably start fiddling with the radio instead..
2. I was advised to get one too, after I kept scraping my left bumper and hit my left signal light. Its supposed to be useful in judging distance when turning into tight corners as well. I personally felt it might be useful too. It looks a bit cheap though but, I suppose its cheaper than changing the signal light everytime
3. LOL, true true..I guess we "auto drivers" have gotten a bit lazy. I have always marveled at how "manual drivers" do it specially in the crazy traffic here in SL
4. yep, that's exactly why I flick it to Neutral as well. N is just one higher than D, so its faster to get moving once the traffic starts to move. Every second counts when your trying to avoid trishaws from butting in front
5. yikes! I feel like a complete idiot now but you were right, it didn't move on an absolute flat place. Thanks for saving me from a lot of embarrassment at the garage!
6. Hello experts, I have a Mazda familia 1999 Auto transmission. I recently had the EFI cleaned at the garage, (they used a can of Wurth's EFI cleaner) after that I noticed that while at a long stop in traffic, when I put the car in Neutral and take my leg off the breaks, the car begins to move forward slowly. It did not do this before. Could this be the result of the EFI cleaning or some other problem? I would just like an opinion before I take it back to the garage. Thanks!
7. It means the car is as shiny and clean like freshly minted money and smells as fresh as your breath after brushing with mint toothpaste I also like the description "(s)topping condition" and "lady doctor used"
8. For Overdrive, the indicator comes on to remind you that it is OFF. As being ON is the default position. This is what it says in the manual: O/D OFF indicator light This light comes on when the overdrive has been turned off.
9. Yep, Thanks for the link. That makes sense.., now if I would only remember to turn it off when going down hill luckily there aren't too many hills on my usual commute
10. Thanks for clarifying Stig. I managed to find a manual for the 2001 protege. And according to this manual there is an overdrive mode button on the gear lever. However it works in a funny way, overdrive is on by default. Pressing the button cancels overdrive. The manual suggests canceling overdrive in stop and go traffic. When you press the button on the gear lever and cancel overdrive an indicator lights up on the dashboard. Confusing isn't it?This is what the manual for the 2001 protege says: Overdrive operation In D, the transaxle automatically shifts to overdrive, which improves fuel economy and reduces noise. To allow engine braking when going down a steep grade, make sure the overdrive button is in the off position And for a smoother ride with less shifting, don’t use it when: • Going up a steep grade. • Driving in stop-and-go traffic. • Pulling heavy loads. To turn off the overdrive, push the button. The transaxle will then shift through a three-gear sequence in D. Shift patterns without overdrive: D = 1st, 2nd, 3rd 2 = 2nd 1 = 1st To turn it on, push the button again. Shift patterns with overdrive: D = 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th 2 = 2nd 1 = 1st In my 1999 BJ model, D is marked as D3 which added to the confusion. Anyway I have it sorted out now, Thanks!
11. Hey guys, I am a bit confused with the auto gear set up on my Mazda familia. They are set up like this: P R N D3 S2 L1 I know what the P,R,N are for and I use the D3 to drive, but what confuses me is why do they have D3 instead of just D? and what are the S2 and L1 for? I do not have the exact owner's manual for this model, so please excuse the stupid question. Thanks!! O.K I figured out what the S2 and L1 are for. But having only a D3 instead of a plain D confuses me. I know that D3 is supposed to be for stop and go traffic, but what if I wanted to engage the fourth gear on a clear stretch of road, how to do that?
12. Thanks I did. Btw, The mazda.lk site is under construction
13. Yes, that's good enough. Thanks a bunch!
14. Greetings all, I recently purchased a Mazda familia (YOM 1999)and would like to read the owner's manual. Unfortunately the dealership did not have one. Can anyone direct me to a link where I could download one? Many thanks!
