  1. Dear Trinity

I know you have answered this question a 100 times on this platform before. But since this is 2021 and cars have gotten older and prices have gotten crazier, can I ask you one more time, is a 2003 cs1 with 158k on the clock by three owners, is worth for 2.8 mil? And what to expect with  car like that? I have the option of buying a suzuki sx4 crossover, single owner with 120k on the road for 3.45mil. Your opinion on that?

For that range you can try a newer model CS3 (like 2010). Other cars I’m not much updated with the prices these days. All I see are absurd prices.

When I bought my Lancer EX, I had the idea of upgrading to an outlander or a Mazda 6 down the line. However I just put that idea on hold because for the prices these vehicles are being sold, I could buy a good house or a nice piece of land. In addition, if you carefully look, there aren’t many vehicles that are up for sale which are well maintained.
so be careful and throughly check the vehicle before buying.

      Hi Amil,

Part of the answer you are looking for is in your question itself. Prices have gotten crazier, because of this factor its impossible to determine a baseline. Hence it would ultimately come to the condition of the car, your requirement and what you are willing to pay.

2003 CS1 hovered around 2.2Mn price tag before this price hike. Now even an Alto is priced at 2.0Mn rage. Hence can argue that 2.8 Mn is a fair price for a Japanese Sedan.

However, you really need to check the condition of the vehicle before proceeding. These days most of the people who owns  a car that runs good seldom sell them. Mainly because the alternatives are very less.

As for comparing these two cars, its just apples to oranges isn't it? One is a sedan slightly under powered and the other is a hatch.

Lets list down main areas which you should consider before committing to either of the car.

      Lancer

Its 18 year old and has been used by three owners. Hence I really doubt that the mileage given is correct. Check the past records, especially maintenance records. Look for replacement of timing belt, clutch, suspension, tires, battery, brake pads and rear brake cylinders, lower arm bushes and engine mounts etc.. if you can't find these records or the available records are inconsistent, I would suggest to stay away from it.

      SX4

This is a newer car than the 2003 CS. Since its a single owner car, there is a high chance that all maintenance records are available with him/her. Though the car is a hatch, its spacious. I haven't heard any inherent issues with this car. But my knowledge on this model is much less, hence you need to do your research. One of my office mates has this car and so far I haven't heard him complaining about it. If the mileage is really 120k, it should have the records of recent suspension changes, gear oil changes, tire changes, A/C repairs etc. Check for those.

All in all, if the SX4 has proper records I'd say it would be the best option (as it has lower mileage, newer than the Lancer, less owners, powerful than the CS1 etc..). However, I can't comment on the price for the reasons I've mentioned above.

      Hope this helps.

      Best of Luck

      Cheers!

  3. Anybody used Partsouq or Amayama? What are your experiences with them?

    1. trinity

      trinity

Just had some parts delivered through Partsouq. They never disappoint. But SL customs taxed the hell out of me this time. Parts costs about 10k and tax was 12k (Shipping about 9k). Unless the part is something that cannot be sourced locally or something very expensive here, this option no longer makes sense.

  5. Effin' pickup driver reversed onto the rear bumper while I was parked ???

Luckily the damage is minor, I'm on two minds whether or not to get the bumper repainted or leave it as it is

Damn! That’s a sad scene to look at. Sorry to see this. But glad that it didn’t cause a bigger damage, especially to the body . I get your concern about painting as most paint shops doesn’t match the color properly. My front bumper is slightly off colored due to a situation like this. It had been done by the previous owner.

During my ownership I too got rear ended while traveling on slow moving traffic. Though there was not much of a damage, the paint got peeled off in the area of impact. I got it repainted at the agent and they did a pretty darn good job at it. Color matched to a perfection.

I’m gonna get my front bumper painted from them when I get a chance.

As for your damage, I’d rather you’ve left the small scratch on the metal without touching up like that. And if you got the money sorted out, get it painted at Unit#d Mot#rs and be done with it.

Huge Nintendo Game Boy fan.. Had 2 classics and one Advance. Had about 10 original cartridges and few Chinese duplicates. Back in the day we used to exchange the cartridges with friends and eventually most of them were lost with them. Sold the Advance, dont know what happened to the classics, maybe they are still there at my parents place..

Hashan, dont ever do neutrals when the car is driven on public roads. And usually our cars does 14 outstation & 10 city and its the average best figure we could get out of them. Above are exeptional cases where you take a long drive in expressway and then continue rest in less traffic roads which is also like an expressway. :)

@ The Stig, but in cars even if you can see the side of the car on the mirror, you actually cant see the entire length of the car. reason is the slightly inward angular shape towards the rear of the car. so you cant exactly judge the distance just looking at the mirror.
