  1. It's a sad day for DIYers and petrolheads who know the value of this man's work. I must have been around ten years old when I first peered in awe through the pages of a Haynes manual. It was one for a Renault 12 that belonged to my grandfather. That manual is probably one of the reasons for why I don't mind some grease under my fingernails, and what inspired me to get one for almost every car I've owned.

    Rest in peace Mr Haynes.

Factory Workshop Manuals, as the name suggests are for the use by authorised dealers and service centres and they're supplied by the manufacturer and circulated among these parties only. This is because the manufacturer usually gets a cut from vehicle services through dealers and agents after their cars are sold (spares mainly). So although we're able to find workshop manuals online, they're technically copyrighted and cannot be circulated publicly. I believe the manufacturer supplies special tools and diagnostic equipment to these dealers as the manuals usually indicate tools required.

Haynes is a third party company that print their own versions of manuals and they're available to be purchased and used by anyone. I believe some of the content (torque specifications, capacities and tolerances) are obtained from the respective manufacturers. The manuals are usually assuming that special tools (only available with the authorised dealers) are not available and are written with the regular person in mind. Some of the manuals even cover common issues and things to look out for in certain cars - content that's not available in Factory Workshop Manuals

      Hope this makes sense.

The Lance Evo on the other hand has always been a halo car that showcased all that Mitsubishi can do.

Well, unfortunately, MMC is all about SUVs these days, they might as well choose an SUV as their "halo car" and leave the legendary evolution name as it is, a remnant of the glory days of MMC

Well be optimistic everyone, in a time of ever increasing EVs, bland econoboxes, crossovers & so on, the Evo & supra have returned! I don't care about sacrilege because as long as there are beautiful, fun to drive cars (especially with iconic JDM nameplates) I'm happy. Now let's wait for a revived MR2, RX car & S2000

Got a Gameboy Play-it-loud (transparent) version on 12-1-1998 it was one of the last revisions of the gameboy. I loved it so much i think i still have the bill/warranty  somewhere(I still remember the shop name was LaOx and the city was Akihabara)  -sadly the thing packed up about 7 years later :(:( i also had one of em mandatory Chinese NES Knockoffs with contra, mario etc... used to trade cartridges and lost many of them and some were confiscated at school. There used to be a tuk-tuk driver near our home who used to be an avid gamer and Once the second set of game-pads went bust and I was hooked onto PC gaming gave it away to him no idea what happened afterwards cos i got to know he was in jail :D

I've been emulating everything from Gameboy ,NES,N64 to PS2 during the last few years.... thanks for reminding me of this i think it's time to download some roms and emulators :D

    3. asrock

      asrock

I also had a Chinese knock-off of the Atari 2600 I think (or at least the housing was the same), that my mom bought for me because I had completed all the games for the Game Boy and we couldn't find any new game cartridges in Kandy. I think I played it for 6 months or so and ripped it open when the joy stick cracked :D I remember that the middle part where you pop in the cartridge was not even wired. All the games were embedded, had like 100 shitty games.  @matroska I also emulated a game or two but I soon lost interest because you can't get the actual feeling of playing on an hand held or console.

    4. Davy

      Davy

      Nice!

The earliest memories I have of my childhood is of me playing Grand Prix on an Atari 2600 that belonged to my father. I may have been 4 or 5. Back then, there were no other games or consoles to compare it against, so it was the best thing that ever happened to me. :D I remember spending hours on that console and my father even got a second joystick so that I can play with him.

Then when I was about 7 or 8, I got a Chinese knock-off NES with all of the games I cherish to this day (I believe it's the same on that @matroska had, because mine had Mario, Contra, Gradius, Battle City (Tank 1990), Road Fighter, F1 Race, Galaga and many more in built games. The good thing about the console was that it had a functional NES cartridge slot. I was gifted many genuine Nintendo cartridges and I still have them.

As for the consoles, we moved house in 2009 or so and my mother has thought the consoles are worthless and has "donated" them to some kid in the old neighbourhood. I discovered only a couple of years ago that they are gone. :( Those classic consoles are worth a lot these days and complete sets go for over Rs. 50,000 now.

I too have been emulating my favourite games for a while now. However, there are Bluetooth wireless controllers now and I got a pair a few weeks ago. I must say that they've been the best thing I've purchased in a while. I can now run the game on a tablet or phone and cast it on the TV and it's just like the good old days again! :) The 8bitdo ones are the best IMO (the controls feel and behave like the real deal. And no input lag although it's wireless), but there are many cheap Chinese ones out there too.

I'm also thinking of getting the classic editions that Nintendo have been releasing, just for authenticity's sake. There's a NES, SNES, Atari and even a C64 mini edition that were released by the actual companies a few years ago.

      NES Classic:

      https://www.nintendo.com/nes-classic/

SNES Classic (this is the UK/Australia version):

      https://www.nintendo.com.au/snes-classic/

Google "Atari Flashback" for the Atari 2600 and "C64 mini" for the Commodore 64 mini.

The last image I tried to upload was 4.3MB or something, the progress bar reaches 100% but I got an error message. But some times I'm able to upload without a problem, maybe something with my internet connection.

    3. Davy

      Davy

Maybe you can resize the images before uploading so that the file size is lower. I always make sure the max width of the images I upload here are about 1280px and the file size is a few hundred kilobytes. For a forum, I think this works well.

if someone can make a post including the prices of vehicles for permit that would be great :( im lost here so many different importers and so many different prices.. one import honda civic for 3m one for 5m :3

    4. matroska

      matroska

well that's almost impossible - i mean there are 1000's of importers and various models. Best option is for individuals to check prices with a few importers then go to the numerous Japanese auction sites get a rough idea about prices and factor in the tax etc. As a potential buyer one has to do their research/homework than expect others to do it for them. for example you go to a UK used car site and find out that the Civic 1L goes for about 20,000 GBP and add the 17.5 Mill tax for 1000 cc and get a rough price (also keep in mind the costs for insurance and freights.)

    4. Davy

      Davy

:P Well it's like this... I went to the garage early morning because the car stalled twice the previous day. Kept it slow with AC off and I reached the garage without stalling at all. Did the scan, got the error and I was stupid enough to come back to colombo in the car itself to get the new sensor. Bad decision... Car stalled at several places (for 30 mins sometimes). Managed to reach the garage somehow after a few stalls, but they've closed for the day. :D

how much did it cost you for the parts?

    3. Davy

      Davy

About 29K for the front shocks, 22K for the 2 busted engine mounts. 12K for the bearings + axel oil seal and a small amount for other parts + re-setting wheel alignment etc. Parts were bought from the agents except for the shocks (KYB bought from T@@S). Set me back about 70K in total with labour. :S
