It was wonderful when it started life so it seems that its taken over by the Elamilk community and the car sales brokers I see.

+1 to that, was a group for the true enthusiasts

So a couple of months back, I purchased a Toyota Vitz 2011 (KSP130, 1KR-FE) driven about 133k kilometers, and ever since I've driven about 5k. After the first 2-3 weeks of purchase, I discovered a few problems like the Engine Mount was gone, the Shock Absorbers, and a few more things as suggested by the service center I visited for a full service of the car (I'm a noob, my first car, I just wanted something reliable and decent looking to go from A to B). Before you mention whether I got the car inspected before purchase, yes, I did when I bought it from a massive "car house" situated in Malabe (I know you can guess it) and they have an in-house car inspection service from a well-known car service center (the one that was on Baseline road and now re-branded). The car sales guys told me that I could only get it inspected by them as they do not allow cars to leave the premises.

I was naive enough to trust the company and get the inspection, which showed no faults. Biggest mistake of my life that cost me a lot of money to get fixed.

So after all the repairs, I was finally happy that I didn't have to visit service stations anymore and all that (I got the car repaired and serviced at the famous service center that starts with an "S" and ends with a "G" (St__l__g). They did an engine tune-up as well (they told me an engine tune-up is good for the car and my car-savvy friend also recommended doing so when he came with me on a drive in my car) so I did it as well during my first service.

So here comes the fun part, just about the start of December, I was planning a few trips (work holidays, yay), and right before driving to one, I decided to get a car wash and get the crucial components inspected to ensure everything was good. This is about 3000km since my last service at the previously mentioned place. All components were good except the engine oil. It had fallen significantly below the two dots on the stick you use to measure the engine oil level (my apologies, idk what it is called). It was literally only on the tip. I still didn't understand the severity of the issue at the time, and even the vehicle shop guy said it is fine to drive on a trip, just go to your service center after your trip and check what happened.

I drove about 100 kilometers and then immediately went to the service center that my first service and they checked for oil leaks - which were none as they suggested and they told me that it was due to engine oil burn and they topped up 1.5L of 15w40 (Toyota) engine oil. Fast forward about 900 kilometers later, I think I've burnt at least a liter of engine oil now. I went into the service center for another weird sound that I thought would be good to get checked, long story short, not a problem, the sound was caused by a car wash and the water had gone into the break or something. But I decided to get the engine oil checked as well, and they saw the difference. Then the service manager comes and asks me how many kilometers since the last service, and I tell him about 4000. Then he tells me you were supposed to be here on 3000 kilometers because the engine oil was sludged. I was surprised as I had never communicated about such an issue and the service book had told me to return at 5,000 kilometers since service (It has only been about 3 months since service).

The funny thing is he was the same service manager who did the oil top-up for me when I went there about 1,000 kilometers before.

Now they told me I have to get a service immediately and I have made a booking to do so, and I will be visiting them within the next few days for the service.

They told me if, after the service, this issue is not sorted, I might have to go for an engine overhaul or engine replacement depending on my risk appetite and budget. I am not sure what to do in this scenario. Your advice would be highly appreciated in this!

Any advice is highly appreciated on how I can go about this stuff, as I do not want to sell the car as all the guys ask me to. If someone sold me a faulty product, it feels unethical to me if I forward that faulty product to someone else just because I get saved from the expenses. This car means a lot to me, it is my first ever car and I want to keep this car for at least 3-5 years.

Bro, where are you based? If it is in Kandy will be glad to help you out.

    1. You probably need to get in touch with a petrol-head who knows a thing or two about cars. You have a lot to learn.
    2. Don't sell it, I've had a heap of similar scenarios back when I was a noob and once we fixed up a car and used it for 20 years with no issues, ran near 400,000km (diesel engine) since the fix. Fix it and use it

If you buy it from Upgarage or Yahoo auctions those things run for about 7000yen on average if you want a pristine looking one. If you are okay with some scartches then we are looking at about 4000-5000....how the **#**# does it run up to 100K ? The one without the color LCD but tacho meter is about 5000yen for a good one. Plus local shipping of course.

I should quit my job and just strip parts and send them to SL :D

I've no interested in upgrading the lump we have as a brightly colored gauge cluster will not shine any light to the bland drive it offers. It is probably the lowest mileage vitz in the country and my wife will never sell it, will probably rot away in my garage.

However these gauge clusters are divided between the ones with Safety Sense and Non Safety Sense models thus they end up costing atrocious prices. I just mentioned what I have seen to OP here.

Perhaps you should peep into the Fb classifieds to fuel your venture,🤣

I saw fellas selling various crap claiming JDM used blah blah.

@iRage Will appreciate it if you can guide me into making a few purchases off Yahoo Japan, as I have a small project and is in dire need of a few bits from Japan.

    Hi all,

I have a vitz KSP130 2018 model safety edition. The stock meter cluster doesn't have a taco meter and a digital display. Is it possible to upgrade it to a meter cluster with a taco meter and/or LCD display? I have seen that the RS model and some NSP models have LCD display and taco meter.

Some old posts I found in the site by fellow member @ghostwriter.

    WhatsApp Image 2020-11-24 at 1.18.31 PM.jpeg

Please advice if anyone know a place to do the upgrade or anyone already done it.

    Thanks in advance!

Can do, there are some available in the Facebook groups, of NSP130 matching KSP130, just plug and play however none available for the models with safety sense and autobraking models locally.

Half the vitz fellas in SL are hunting that gauge cluster and so will pay atrocious amounts to get one.

Mileage correction will have to be done.

Eitherways its a CVT, there is no huge benefit to having a rev counter.

The LED screen is pretty. came in the start stop edition. Ones with the colour LED screen go over 100K LKR and very hard to find. Also you need a special multifunction steering for that (Not the one on normal Vitz's) with a different ribbon, in all will go near 200K LKR if you find them locally.

Hi, I need some advice. I recently bumped my car to a wall and the front left door and the front bumper got badly damaged. The insurance agent(A*****z) quoted 35,000/- but the damages looked like it would cost more. I asked him and he said if it cost more to talk to the insurance company. I received the 35,000/- in 2 days.

So now what should I do? Should i go to my garage and get an estimate for the repairs and if its higher than what the insurance quoted should i contact them? Or will the garage deal with them directly?

I have a bad feeling that this is going to drag so i need your advice on how to approach this correctly please.

If you have a trustworthy garage, just put it there and ask the insurance to settle it. They will negotiate and do the needful.
But make sure the garage is reputed or trustworthy such that they won't collaborate with the insurance and do a shoddy repair to balance both sides and make a quick buck.

Example, If the bumper is broken beyond repair ( large cracks, holes, tears in plastic, tears in clips and mounts, insist on replacement as the insurance may negotiate with the garage and try to fix it. Do not hesitate to attack or escalate any dispute with the insurance as their entire profits now depend on underpaying claims. Threaten to appeal via the insurance ombudsman or social media. Sri Lanka is that good now.

Hmmm.....what is a small vehicle? Something like a Lancer EX is also small and not that much larger than a Vitz or an Audi A1. The Euros will definitely be the more premium and refined options. I can't believe I am saying this but even a Raize will be a bit better than the 1L Vitzes. or even a Juke/Qashqai if you want to go with some Japanese options. Also, there is the Mazda2 sedan and hatchback (and Demio from Japan). Again, much better than the 1L Vitz.

There are some cars with different trim options that are better than the basic F Grade Vitz,

such as F LED, Amie, Jewela and some with Mix and matched options with nice seats, Color MID and all.

Perhaps that may also be an option.

  7. When it comes to the Montero Sport and Fortuner, you sorta land and the bottom end of the pool of vehicles for sale with your budget, thus landing with the high mileage beat up cars that have been around the block.

I'd suggest trying to stretch your budget a bit more as approx. there are many genuine cars at the 100K Km mark for sale, but demanding a bit higher price.

I know you see a load for sale on ###### or fb marketplace but those have probably done north of 400K (tampered to 100K) with many lady drivers and doctor/director/chairman owners. The gearbox will need an overhaul nearing 400K.

There are Montero Sport's that have done 400K + in govt institutions with no issues to date. I have seen a 2007 fortuner at the 350K km mark in Jaffna with only a facelift(Ex-UN or embassy car I think).

My prediction is they will rise again due to the wonders of this nation.

Also keep in mind of essential maintenance of these vehicles as you will need about LKR200,000 for the timing belt + ancillary replacements even if the mileage at the 100K km mark or 200K Km mark.

The most frugal of an oil change would cost about LKR30000+ (Montero Sport) and that is every 5000km, same with the Fortuner.

70mai (front + rear + GPS model) doesn’t have an inbuilt park monitoring system. Have to purchase an external wiring kit for that facility but that kit also not sensitive enough to identify regular vibrations. And other issue is that system get activate after 5mins. So you don’t get any recording for the first 5 mins after parking.

In a country like ours, I don't believe there is much gusto attached to a recorded video of a fella nicking your mirrors. When you show these videos to cops they are like, "apita owa balanna wela nah mahaththayo, entryak daana"

In reality the only REAL use of a dash cam is to scare away potential thieves, or offenders on the road, even cops.

Also I presume there will be a fair drain to the car battery as the camera itself will not run on its own battery after a while. Lastly these are all low end cameras which we pay a fair buck thanks to the USD, I wouldn't go to tapping into the wiring harness for something of this grade, rather spend that money for full insurance cover, atleast you'll get 70% as a claim.

  9. my advise would be to hold on to whatever you have or source something that is from a good owner, as the market is flooded with buy and sell buggers and their kids trying to make a fast buck. All the "market fast moving models" have faux mileages and are loaded with impending repairs. If you monitor the classifieds and Fb Marketplace you may notices the same car exchanging hands quite often for low sums till some mudalali takes it and sells it off to a poor fella in the periphery with a lease.

I'm thinking to buy a 4x4 SUV around 6-8 million rupees.  I would like to get your ideas on below vehicles

    1. Montero Sport 2008 diesel 4x4 4d56 2500CC engine

    2. Toyota harrier 2007 RX300 petrol 4x4 2400cc

    3. Montero 2003 petrol 4x4 V6 3000CC

Actually, I dont have any experience in driving any SUVs yet. I really appreciate your ideas and experience on the above vehicles in following areas.

maintain cost, reselling value, fuel consumption, durability, spare parts availability etc.

    Thank you.

    Well these are 3 very different categories of vehicles, each has pros and cons, besides price they don't share much in common. I have extended family owning each one of these so can tell you this;

    1. Montero Sport 2008 diesel 4x4 4d56 2500CC engine

    Pros -

Cheap to run, Cheap to fix, ample parts EXCEPT body panels, shares many parts with the L200 of that Era, Very capable offroad, decent fuel economy. These were the last montero sports' that were made in Japan.

Cons - Interior bit cramped but not at all bad, as far as I know all imported are Manual transmission (may not be a con to you), expect High mileage cars.  70% of these came in black which I love but not the most preferred in the market. Interior plastics are very prone to cracking due to the heat soak on the black ones. Worst Handling of the 3

They have a faux low market status as 99% came brand new via agents, therefore car sellers have purposely lowballed them into low market, so that they can shed a million mile 120 prado that has more fiber work and paint than a 3 wheel. However they are now picking up in market as they can be modified very well to go offroad, plus the starting cost is much lower than a prado or montero.

    2. Toyota harrier 2007 RX300 petrol 4x4 2400cc

Pros - Very comfortable, Well Toyota badge : Sri Lankans, Better Interior, Better Ergonomics, Much more luxurious for its period. Best handling of the 3

Cons - Parts are expensive, source-able but not as easy as the others. Poor off road capability compared to others. Not the worst but fuel economy is a not a boon.

    3. Montero 2003 petrol 4x4 V6 3000CC

Pros - Comfortable, Spacious, Still has the road presence, Parts are easy to find, Can hold its ground off road. Handles better than the montero sport.

Cons- Very Thirsty, resale is not that great. much older compared to the others but given their fuel factor you can find cars with lower mileage than the others. Also due to their prestigious status at the time, most were expensive and well taken care of. The 3litre one is not that nippy. It will be a mission to find a good one.

All in all I would go for the Montero Sport diesel in a heartbeat, as we had one a while ago, regret selling it badly.

No..they do not have the same engine. The Alto is a Suzuki (Maruti) and has a K or F series engine (?, no idea what the Indian version has). The Kwid is a Renault and has a Nissan-Renault built engine.

They are both pretty appalling when it comes to safety so don't drive it anything faster than a bicycle and stay away from anything that whizzes past you.

Even if you find a good example, the reality is that things like brake pads, shocks, etc..do not last that long. So although day to day running might be low, be prepared to replace consumables at far greater intervals than something like a common Japanese hatchback.

You might want to look at cars like a Starlet, March, Swift, etc..as well, although they might be older than the Alto or Kwid you can get. Also, finding a good one might take sometime.

    + Kwid = Plastic Sump

I own a nissan leaf 2012 ZEO model car.I bought a cheap Bluetooth OBD 2 scanner online for nissan leaf. I connected it through the info car app first after trying connect it says app connected to obd 2 device but doesn't connect to the ECU.

I checked it with leaf spy lite and pro app versions but it doesn't connect also.

After I bought another obd 2 scanner online which says compatible with nissan leaf and leaf spy app.But I get same result from that too.

I needed check some fault codes . As the scanners doesn't work . I removed the negative 12 v battery terminal and leave for about 5 minutes and start again and it doesn't make any difference in fault codes errors come right after like they haven't cleared. I think there's something wrong with the ECU of my car.

I need to know why OBD 2 scanner doesn't connect and if there's any other way to clear the codes without a scanner?

Get the battery health assessment at A*W, they have a proprietary scanner for leaf. My input is dated to the 2017 era, when I owned one so peek into the FB pages to see if they still do the scans.

There is a possibility that someone did a bms reset or some milaege hack and removed the CAN High / Low pins off the obd port lines to prevent buyers from getting a readout and testing them.,

    Thank you very much.

Does the rear seats support child car seats.

And one more thing. I want to buy a petrol vehicle thus KR 42. I have gone through some AL posts and found that NOAH are not commonly available in Sri Lanka and only ones are KR 42s (GL or DX) converted to NOAH. And AL forums suggest some conversions are not done properly.

So i am bit confused now. If I buy a KR42 converted to NOAH, what are the things i should be looking.

Original Noahs came with Chassis Tag SR40 and as SR50 (4wd), so on

There are only a handful of original Noahs in the country. Even if you buy a conversion, my opinion is by now all the problems would have been sorted. To be sure do an inspection at Car Checks or Toyota.

Noah 5 door models were very rare, so just see if a 5 door one was converted to 4 door by welding a cut panel. The welding bit and closing of the driver side rear door is the place where most issues come. Also get the dual AC lines checked by a AC place to see if the shrouding and things were done properly. Lastly the Noah gauge cluster is different from the stock one, and the harness is also different. Do check if all that was replaced correctly. Inspection will cover most of the above points.

Your problems are halved as you are looking for a petrol one, as most noahs in the market were petrol to diesel converted and then noah converted, the diffs, final drive, engine guards, subframe, all had changes which are overlooked during the petrol to diesel conversion.

From the chassis no you can check if it was a factory 5 door or 4 door model, so try to get a 4 door van converted to a 4 door noah.

They are very basic vans and any issue can be easily sorted. Since you are looking for a petrol one, the chances of finding a better conversion are higher as most of the hacked ones are diesel. The American billet grill model is the one that has issues with ground clearance because of the body kit.

My knowledge on the subject is now about a decade old, so follow a few facebook groups and you may get an idea of newer experts and garages who handle noahs.

Btw, i was thinking of kr42 noah over freed(my last selection based on our previous conversation was freed).

    Say 2007/2012 model.

Found many info in previous al discussions.

But couldnt find any on ground clearance . Google does not give an accurate value either . Can anyone pls tell me about ground clearance of kr42.

Sometimes i have to travel on bumpy and broken roads where ground clearance become a great deal. And i have to transport වී මලු and such cargo all the time. (Not for business purposes but for pursonal usage.)

And does anyone know about child car sear compatibility of noah kr42.

I am now seriously thinking about noah kr42 over freed. Guys. Help me out

Very good point sir. This i was thinking a lot and every second hand vehicle seeker will glad to read this.

    And the last sentence 100%agreed

We had a CR51 for like 20 years from new, Auto 4wd, did turbo engine with M/T swap later, ground clearance is almost similar to a Hilux Vigo if you put it on 15' Tyres and 4wd system was very capable.

Being low market you might be able to find one for cheap, then again selling is also difficult. There is no major difference in fuel economy between both.

These models are still preferred in the hill country markets around nuwara eliya, lot of one owner vans there.
