  1. It would be an awesome project to restore is to the original specs and love to see a original spec KE74. As of now i can give you below amounts to closest 1K and these amounts are as of end 2008 / early 2009.

Fixing rust work & aligning stuff - 49K

Paint job from scratch to metal - 69K

    A/C work - 22K

    New Locks/ Central locking / Security System - 15K

New alloys + tires (after 8K deduction for existing tires & rims) - 42K

    Mag city tint - 3K

Let me check if i could find amounts for other tasks. But not sure..

Thanks very much. Tmrw i'm going to replace the core of the radiator with a new one. will cost me 15k. I think it's a fair price. Tends to overheat on speeds close to 100 km/h. I don't want blow my engine on the highway. :action-smiley-028:

  2. I only found 2 pics since i'm out of country at the moment. There were more pics at home when it was newly restored.. :( Also i hide reg plate and face since i uploaded in a photobucket.

Awesome. I thought those wagons came only in white

  3. I too did a restoration for a KE72. I'm not sure if its ok to mention the exact names of garages that i did it. Admin please remove the names if its against the policy.

So here is my story. I did my restoration at Mithila garage in Narahenpita. Its near Police hospital , NLDB, Railway crossing. So here's the summery. The car was fully dissembled for this process including engine, seats, light fittings, etc..

    1. Engine was send to Edirisingha brothers for overhaul (bcos i requested to get it done as this car ran on LPG for couple of years which was converted by Laughs and i wanted a complete restoration job after disconnecting the LPG system. I would never use LPG again and won't recommend to any one who loves their car).

1.1 Rest of the mechanical checks and repairs was done by the garage itself but the master brake pump repair was done by some place in Panchikawatta, but all the coordination was done by the garage.

    2. Complete paint job was done by the garage and they have a paint booth. Existing paint was removed to the metal and paint job started from zero. I applied the same color which was in the registration but only difference was it was metallic paint.

    3. During this time i was shopping for new light fittings including headlights, tail lamps, new led lights for dashboard, new door locks, central locking system, security system. Also i didn't like the existing 155/R12 tires and rims so i found a decent looking alloy set and 175/r13 tires (Brand new). If you are searching for alloys make sure you buy alloys that can be fixed without spacers. Rear tires wont be a issue check with front tires. But remember since KE72 does not have power steering more the grip tire gets harder it get to turn at still. Not much of a problem while driving.

3.1 I changed the original sealed beam head lights to 100w H4 halogen headlights. As it requires lot of current i had to use a 60amp battery and changed the alternator.

3.2 I was able to find almost all light fittings new except for the lights inside front bumper & reverse lights. So existing ones were used after thorough cleaning.

3.3 For rear speakers i removed the original hardboard and fixed a wooden board which is modified to look 'almost' same as the original hardboard.

3.4 I already had a good single din setup so didn't do any change for that. Also kept the original AM receiver as it is because i couldn't think of anything to do in that place. But i did re-wiring for all speakers at Pet#o Lanka because they fix the setup in the first place, so i went to them again.

3.5 Central locking and Security system was fixed at SunLanka. Before that i installed new locks to 2 doors, boot lock, ignition key.

    4. For seat covers and upholstery work the garage hired another person who came to the garage and complete it.

-- But if you can take it to Goonawardana cushion works it will be better, all my other cars was taken to Goonawardana cushion works Wijerama. They did awesome job for cushion works and complete carpet jobs.

    5. For electrical re-wiring the car was taken to a near by place for re-wiring.

    6. Suspension testing and adjustment, Brake test, head light alignment was done at Nalaka wheel alignment.

    7. When it comes to A/C most parts were replaced but kept the existing compressor because i didn't find a matching new one. A/C task was done at Frostair.

    8. Engine tuneup was done by Mr Dhammika.

    9. For complete cleaning job the car was taken to Cleen park.

    10. I did a window tint from Mag city but i don't recommend that as the tint color changed after few years. I wouldn't recommend anything more than 3M Chrystaline tint. Its the best i've ever used. (But i didn't change the tint on KE72 to 3M).

This is at highlevel what i did on my KE72 restoration project.. Hope this helps to start your project.

  4. Dear pros,

Autolanka had been a great place get those needful info all these years. Appreciate all the members.

Now I am planning to restore my 30 yr old KE74 to its first looks, I mean to its original looks. Its been for a year with me. I have ordered a heynes manual for this car. It's on the way. Planning to use it for mainly mechnical repairs. In the mean time I am planning to get the body work done. She has some rust spots. what I am worried about is for those rust around the windscreen and the tailgate. Got plans to replace the windscreen. The windscreen is a nightmare when driving at night.

I plan to do the following

    1. Body derust and paint (tinkering and paint)+ undercoat- I am looking for a place at the moment if u konw a place pls suggest

    2. I have some rust (worn down) on the frame (chassy) only in one place. Its near the engine mount. Want to repair it as well. wellcome your suggessions how to repair this part.

    3. Mechanical repairs - I think I'll be able to manage

    4. Interior - I am looking for a place to restore to its original looks. Guys if you could suggest me a place I'll greatly appreciate.

This is my first restoring project. Hope you'll add your cents and rupees for this.

    Thanks a lot guys

  5. Not sure whether this is the the same place I'm referring to, but I hope AL Mods will allow me to post the full name in order to help other fellow AL members to stay away from this shop.

Name of the shop : 'Tharaka Auto Windscreen (PVT) LTD'

Address : 519, High Level Road, Delkanda, Nugegoda.

    Date of Visit : 22/11/2010

    Time of Visit : 2.00pm

Tme left the shop : 7.00pm

Reason to visit : To service automatic window winders of all four doors of a Toyota Starlet

    Bill amount : Rs 7150/=

Number of employees attended the job : 5

Initial reception was very fine from the shop owner but the service & the final outcome is totally unsatisfactory. Not worth for the money spent on the work. Stay away from this place.

    you got place right

  6. There 's a place at Wijerama Junction, close to pola (weekly fair). Name m.. m..forgotten... some sort of windscreen place(small joint). There's an expert and charges are very reasonable. He did a good repair job of my ex....Carina door locks.

Hi, went to the place recently to fix all cylinder door locks of a old corolla wagon. Needed to repair 4 cylinder locks . this is what they did and you decide whether to go or not to go there.

    1. Went there at about 11 am returned at about 5pm waited for a whole 6 hrs and still couldn't get the job done ( only 2 door locks were fixed). So had to go there next day. I left the other door locks with them for the next day after promising to finish up next day. I was expecting to wait but not for 6 hrs. Charged me 3000 thats 750 per lock.

    2. Next day after calling them went there in the afternoon and staight away they fixed the locks. I thought finally the job was done but checks revealed 2 locks are still not proper. It seemed like they haven't done anything on the second day but just fixed it. Told the guy then and there and he was clueless didn't know what to do. Then aked me "can you come another day?"

Didn't want to argue with those guys about the job, it will only make me nervous in the end. So I got off of that place saying to them in my mind "pinata thiyaganin" and never will want to go there.

So far I have no idea what to do for the locks. I don't know whether i can buy new ones.

They may have done good jobs, but never in my case. If they cant do they shouldn't have accepted the job.

    Good luck

  7. cmxjn,

You live in Colombo? Can you show the car to me I will try to help you.

    Sylvi Wijesinghe.

I live in Maharagama. Thanks for offering help. Sorted out the matter. It was the rod of the master clutch pump longer than the one before. Making the rod short to the one before is the remedy. Thanks again

  8. I got new clutch pumps at p'watte. I showed the existing ones to G* Auto at P'watte they did the search for me. I am long time customer of theirs. cost me 10k and 20min of waiting. Reasonable I guess. There was a small change in the slave clutch pump, and the result was the clutch pedal now remains abt 5 cm higher than other pedals, need getting used to it. Have you guys got any suggession to lower the clutch pedal.? Its been lowered to the max by adjustments.

  9. Congratulations, you made the right choice! :sport-smiley-004: You're more than welcome to share photos on this thread.

A 5K engine means it's a 1.5DX. How many Kms on the ODO? Does it still have the original steel wheels? I'll dig up some old invoices and get you some shop details for parts. These were bought at the 'watthe though.

Thanks very much, ODO says 199,000 kms, not sure whether the ODo reading is genuine. Has 13'' alloy wheels, doesn't harm its original looks.

    By the way its 15-68xx

  10. The thermo fan arrangement is very rare on these. I think most JDM KE72 wagons have the clutch fan (or something) for the radiator whereas I've seen some KE70/AE70 sedans in other markets with the thermo fans. The clutch fan has to have a shroud that goes around the fan for adequate cooling when the AC is working. If not, it'll overheat.

So, you've got a DX too? What year/registration is it? Is it in good nick? :sport-smiley-004:

Thanks for your comment. Didn't see 2 fans in the engine bay, just the direct fan.

Brought a JDM KE74 last week, YOM-1985 REG-88, has a 5K engine with a 4 speed tranny. Well maintained by the previous owner,at least the body and the paint, had preserved the car interior as well.

A couple of days after taking over, I had to clean up the radiator (after overheating with a/c), then complete check of braking system (after a brake bind) and replaced front wheel razors. Now I removed the clutch master and slave pumps as a preventive measure. Noticed wear and tear intend to replace both clutch pumps with new ones.

Searched for those clutch pumps in Maharagama area, couldn't find any probably because its a old car.

do you have any idea where i could find those clutch pumps for KE 74. A shop specifically?

    Thanks

  11. Hi guys,

I have a question: Want to know whether the KE72/ KE74 wagon comes with 2 fans, 1 for radiator, 1 for the air condition condenser? my one has only the direct fan to cool the radiator. The a/c works without any cooling issues.

    owners pls can you comment.

    Thanks in advance

  12. Thanks for the advice. Thought of buying a 2005 built for an impressive price of about 5/=. Changed the idea after inspection not to buy even though said to be very fuel efficient. Going to settle with a well maintained 1985 KE74 and about to become an owner of a RWD.

  13. Hi Guys, I recently found out that my carb is a mess and had a history of difficulties to pass emission tests within a fair margin. Every time am in the margin. So Having thoughts to replace the carb with preferebly a brand new unit or a re conditioned one. The engine is a GA15DS, and has a ECCU, It is a dual barrel carb. The car model is FN14. I thing B13 (doctor sunny) has the sane engine and the carb.

Guys, Do you have any Idea where i should look to find this carb?

  14. Dear Experts,

I am Planning to buy a scooter for day to day use about 100 km per week, After some research have found these following options,

    1. Demak 125cc - Visited their show room, A Malaysian built- sri lankan assembled, Good bulid quality though not as hondas or tvs. Specs are far better than the others listed here. Asking price lkr 162k

    2. Honda Dio 110cc - asking price 212k

    3. TVS Wego 110cc - asking price 200+k

    4. Mahaindra Rodeo 125cc - asking 195k

I think a 125 cc engine would give a better pick up. Fuel wise all are pretty much the same.

Thinking of going for a Demak 125 cc. mainly because of their specs. The company had been around for a few years my worry is for after sales service.

I would like to know the experts' opinions on this? Thank you

  15. The VQ20DE is not exactly an engine with a lot of performance potential, not without serious bucks anyway... Plus it's heavy and probably will not fit into the pulsar's bay.

You're better off finding an SR20DE and giving it some upgrades.

    thanks Ed.

  16. If you are thinking of fixing a SR20DET( the 2 ltr turbo engine you mentioned) I don't think it'll be possible

Never seen a SR20DET in SL so far. Even if I find one its not practical to swap a SR20DET. Thinking of a VQ20DE which comes with cefiro A32 and A33's. This is a V6 but not sure whether i can squeeze in to a fn14 engine bay

  17. guys, I have a pulsar x1 2 door hatchback FN 14. Has a GA15 E-carb engine front wheel drive. built 92. Thinking of modifyng it to a sleeper with awesome power within rather than the looks. I'm aware of the Pulsar GTIR which is a 4wd 2ltr turbo charged engine. I'd love to have a pulsar Gtir. Sinece i have a fn14 looking for ideas to modify as a sleeper. any ideas from the members appriciated very much...

  18. common dude i don't own this place or anything... But really it is so funny the way how chathurike and his friend were acting.. They could have made the complaint at that moment, if really something like that happened... they could have talked to the guy who pumped his vehicle and tell that the pumper cheated him.. why didn't they??? :action-smiley-060:

Then what are you? Pump man?? anyway if you are not connected with the place why do you defend so much? If you guys make sure that customers don't get cheated this thread wouldn't have existed?
