  1. Hey macahng, TNX for the advice. This is the da scene. Its very difficult find a reliable mechanic to do da job. As u said U cant trust their as*es as they just try to get da money. yeah now I gt a lil picture how it shud be done. Neway I wan't jump into converting. i think I shud look for good garage. Neway tnx again for the details. Hope to see more from others. Cheers.

machan tell me where you live because i know a good garage.he only undertake a job if he could do it perfectly and the charges are reasonable too. we took our old nissan double cab to him for an engine overhaul and he did it perfectly. and he charged only about 9000 rupees. :)

  2. Hi guys,

I got a Mitsubishi Lancer EX (Lancer Box) 4 forward. Engine capacity is CC1300. I wanna covert it into power steering. Plsease advice me on this. How much will it cost and recomend a guy or a garage for this.

    Cheers

Hi machan one of my friends converterd his old nissan blue bird to power steering some time back. I am not 100% sure about the current prices but at that time(about 1 year ago) he paid around 15000 rupees for the required parts(used parts). those include the new steering rack, the power steering motor and the other pipe lines required to feed oil to the rack and since the power steering motor is driven by a belt you'll need to buy a new puley(this is connected to the crank shaft and all the belts are connected to this) that can facilitate the additional belt.

First take out the current steering rack and take it with you when you are going to buy the new steering rack and always take a good mechanic with you if you dont have knowledge about these parts. You'll be able to find a good steering rack for about 8000. Always go for a good rack even at a higher price.

And make sure to tell the used parts dealer that you'd bring the parts back if the are found to be defective.Normally they give a gurantee for about 4 to 5 days.

I dont know a good garage for the conversion but please be carefull when selecting one. because the mechanic that my friend hired didnt do the job well and now there is a play in the steering rack. :(

  3. Hi guys, need some advice on the following:

I purchased an old car on the 31Mar07 on cash basis.

I have got the transfer papers filled by the previous owner & need to send for ownership transfer.

    1. How much will it cost to get it done on 'one day service' ?

    2. What is the normal service fee & how long will that take ? (IF not one day service)

    3. I have only 1 completed MTA6 form. The previous owner whose an expert said that instead of filling all I

can submit photo copies as it carries same info on all 4 forms. Is this okay with RMV?

    4. Is there a defined time frame from date of purchase & transfer ? Its more than a month now

Hope u guys can help me out with ur expert comments.

    Cheers

The fee for one day transfer would be around 1500 (i think its less than that). Go the RMV before 9 and as soon as they open the gates rush in. Then you'll be able to get it done soon. I think you need 2 passport size photo graphs and a copy of your NIC as well. Machan i advice you to fill all the forms instead of photo copying them.Read the instructions on the tranfer papers carefully. If you use the oneday service you'd be able to get the new documents in the evening.

Normal service would take ages machan and during that period if you decide to see the car that would be a head ache. As far as i know there is no time frame but what they advice is to get it transferred as soon as you buy the car.

  4. There has been a clunking noise coming from the front wheels of my car. This noise was firstly heard when I turn the wheels through steering and later it has been always there while drinving.

My mechanic diagnosed it and told me that the ball joints are tight (very hard to move) and bacause of that the noise is coming. He oiled the joints to temporarily eliminate the noise. According to him the joint was not damaged but only problem is not enough lubrication. He suggested me to drill a hole and place a nipple on to it so that the joint can be lubricated periodically. I haven't decided yet to go for his option.

What do you guys think? What could be the cause of this problem? Anybody experienced similar situation? How did you overcome such a problem? Please share your experience with me, It would be a great help.

How old is the car? If it has a valve through which you can inject grees them you have to lubricate it periodically but machan if it doesnt come with a grees nipple then you are not suppose to lubricate it. May be your ball joints are too old and due for replacement.

  5. Thanx a lot for the info Hola... actually hola, i have a N/A and havent done any modifications to the car ...its all stock...what would happen if i install the muffler, with out the header?

In terms of performance it wouldnt make a very big difference. Changing the muffler is only one part of the jobto make it a full performance exhaust you'll have to change the header and the exhaust pipes as well. Using bigger pipes that match your muffler would make the exhaust restriction low. And machan equipment such as catalytic converters increase the exhaust restrictions. So what some people do is they remove that as well. But this would be disastrous on the environment. But if your catalytic converter is not working and if you dont plan to replace one(ofcourse you wouldnt do it in srilanka) i dont see a reason as to why you keep it.

Archon checkout the picture below it'll show you the difference between a stock exhaust system and a full after markat one.

  6. Hi Nim.. thanx a lot for the information....i know this place! have you installed a header too?? What about your performance and fuel consumption after the installation? im very concerned about the performance of my vehicle! Did they give you any technical information about how it affects the engine?

and dear Nim our admin might get really  about brand /org names if you post them....soo please edit the thread if you can..

    Thanks a lot :D:D:alc:

    Archon

OOOps forgot that ill edit the post machan. I should say that after they installed the exhaust there was some improvement in performance. And machan fuel comsumption was very high when i pushed the car hard. And i didnt find a big difference when i drove the car normally(when i drive the normal way i shift gears at 2000rpm). No machan they didnt give any technical data.

  7. If you wonder how exhaust headers improve performance read the notes below machan. :D

During the exhaust stroke, a good way for an engine to lose power is through back pressure. The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. If there is any amount of resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gases out, power is wasted. Using two exhaust valves rather than one improves the flow by making the hole that the exhaust gases travel through larger.

In a normal engine, once the exhaust gases exit the cylinder they end up in the exhaust manifold. In a four-cylinder or eight-cylinder engine, there are four cylinders using the same manifold. From the manifold, the exhaust gases flow into one pipe toward the catalytic converter and the muffler. It turns out that the manifold can be an important source of back pressure because exhaust gases from one cylinder build up pressure in the manifold that affects the next cylinder that uses the manifold.

The idea behind an exhaust header is to eliminate the manifold's back pressure. Instead of a common manifold that all of the cylinders share, each cylinder gets its own exhaust pipe. These pipes come together in a larger pipe called the collector. The individual pipes are cut and bent so that each one is the same length as the others. By making them the same length, it guarantees that each cylinder's exhaust gases arrive in the collector spaced out equally so there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the collector. There are two types of headers that you can use one is 4-1(four into one) and the other is 4-2-1.(4 into 2 into 1).Usually, the four-into-one header is a better choice for high RPM operation and wild camshafts. For street use where a broader torque band is desired, the 4-2-1 is usually a better choice. However, VTEC Hondas are almost always better off with a four-into-one header because of their inherent long valve timing events.

large Header for a Marino ? where he can buy it ? better to do a Rear Exhaust for Elcardo or Tokimo

you can get a custom built one from one of the famous car modifying guys in srilanka. Once i took my honda there and since the price was too high :( i dropped the idea.

  8. Hi guys im a new member :D ..im hoping to install a muffler (a beat silencer) to my Marino...but i dont know much about the down side of it specially about the way it affect to the engine health... and also can anybody suggest me a place where i can buy a good quality muffler with a deep sound at low rpms! :D guys please help me...

    Thanx

    Archon

Hi bro i got my muffler from el**** ind******* 1.5 years back. They have a wide range of mufflers. I got mine for about 10,000 rupees. Its stainless steel and still in superb condition and it gives a great sound at low rmp.Look at the picture below.

  9. found following ad on the net ... is this possible ? a corolla 110 below 950/ ?

Looking for a car below 950K /= , should be manual.

    NISSAN ---> FB14

    TOYOTA ---> AE100,AE101,AE110

    MAZDA ---> 323

    Hyunda ---> Elantra , Accent

If a car is priced Unbelievably below its market value always check the history of the car well. Because they could be stolen ones.

  10. An Amaron battery is fitted in my Primera. It was there when I bough it. It’s more than 3 years old now. Has lost its flashy Green colour. But still no problem with it.

I’ve changed a Global Maintenance free battery when I had the FB15. The battery dealer was not very convinced abt the Amaron at that time when I asked abt it. He recommended Global if going for a Maintenance free battery. He said there were few came back when they were doing Amaron.

Machan how much did you pay for the battery at that time? Do you know the price of one now? Thanks.

  11. Hi Guys,

Please tell me hows the fuel usage or consumption in Honda EK3... Thought to ask since there are lots Honda Gurus in this forum :D ...

    Thanks in advance

    Gentoo

machan there's one old forum on this matter. Check the old forums under HONDA, you'll be able to find it easily. Plus it has all other information about the EK3 which might be useful for you.

  12. since we're under the topic of cvt i was just wondering whats the difference between tiptronic and cvt? My XG has a tiptronic gearbox engineered by porsche and its a blast to use. Is cvt relatively the same?

Go to the following link bro. Read the article and then you'll understand how CVT s work.

    http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cvt1.htm

Go the following link to findout a list of new cars equiped with CVT gear boxes.

  13. Hey Bro,

Never play around with the timing belt man, its the heart of the car in a way. It may cost you 12,000 for the whole thing including the bearings but no issue. There are some expenses which we should consider in the long term. Like yesterday i heard a noise near the power steering pump and the belt near it so i asked them "how much to remove and repair" they said 350/=. That was fair so i told them to remove and see where the noise is coming from. And even the CVT oil was 1500 per can so i told them to just change it otherwise in the long term if something goes wrong it will be a huge expense, and specialy on CVT it will be huge curse.

When it comes to timing belt, a hiace would say 100,000 and mine was told 60,000. Even the place i worked before had 2 accords and they had changed in 60,000kms. Why take a chance bro. Change it.

    #####

Thanks a lot bro. You saved my life. Last night i checked the service record of my car what you are saying is totally right. Becasue the second owner had changed the timing belt at 67000 km and the third owner has changed it just after 116000 km. The agents have carried out the job and have all the receipts and stuff. :)

    Anyway thanks a lot bro.

  14. No definitley we are still on CVT. But as a comment on your last line, its true they tell you to move away. But be a bit stern and just go to your car. For an instance i have to keep them reminding a dozens of times to be careful when they hold high pressure vacum for the engine as i got the K&N. And even today i stoped it and he just said "oh i thought its good to slightly hold the vacum hose". They are the experts with no doubts but if you have something special which has to be moniterd closley then its our call if they ask us to move away from the servicing bay.

And once again on CVT, i was just next to the car when it was draining etc and no metal pieces found just dark brown ATF (thank god). Thanks for confirming that its 2years or 40,000kms for changing interval Nimz. You are a star!

Thanks Hola. Actually both of us should thank Supra_Natural for giving me the owners manual. Earlier he had a Honda ES8 after selling it he gave me the manual. Hey machan i wanna ask you a little question. In honda EG8 do we have to change the timing belt evey 60000km? I have a EG8 twin carb. the person who told me about it has got a EG8 VTEC. Bit confused machan now my car has done 150000km so dont wanna take a chance.

  15. Nimz,

Just met the man. It has come factory fited and he says the Indica had a normal battery in it. So i guess the mini diesel lorry which sells at 635/= brand new comes with factory fitted Amaron.

PS:Reshufel and do some mods to the word Amaron?-you can spell Moron

you would defineatly be saying that word when you hear the price tag  . well we might be able to use him as the source to find out how good this brand is. keep in touch with him.. ;) . lets see how long he is able to use it.. thanks for the info bro.

Sorry Dude.. thats hog-wash.. whoever who said that was very ignorant.. If you're engine is producing enough heat to evaporate battery water- it would first over heat then the radiator will give up and you wont even be able to run the car.

Anyway unless its some van or truck, your battery will normally sit pretty close to the engine. (in most cars I guess)

Thanks pilawoos :) upto now i even thought that what he said was right.

  16. Sorry Dude.. I'm a bit confused as to how engine temp can reduce/effect battery water levels???

Yea machan once this was a problem to me as well. So years back i went to see a car exhibition at BMICH and got the chance to speak with the agents for one particular brand of battery. Acoording to what he said if the battery is mounted so close to the engine and if the heat of the engine is higher than normal it can evaporate the water in the battery.

  17. No bro, if the Honda manual says so then 40,000 it is for sure. Maybe keep 2000kms as trafic allowance and change in 38,000. Plus the manual also says in 2 years too. I dont run my car that much so might as well do it 2years to 2 years. Thanks for the info!

machan this is off the subject but how the honda service centre now? Do they allow you to go and see while they are carrying our services on your car? Last time i went there i saw i sign saying "STAFF ONLY".B****HIT

  18. you are correct in that argument machang. if it fits for India it fits for us. I know you are intrested in switching into one of them but if the price is double might as well use the normal ones we got in shops.

This neighbour had a Tata Indica too, got to have a sunday morning chat with him

defa if it's double the price i would never buy. yea it gives a 48 month warranty but the important thing is how many 1000 rupee notes we have to spend buying it. A normal battery(EXI*E) ,if i am not mistake, would cost about 8000 or a bit more but if the amoron is priced around 15000 that means it would make a very large whole in the wallet. Since my wallet is not that deep :D ill go for the normal one. .

If the prices are that high i suggest anyone to go for a normal battery and spend the money that they save on car maintenance or upgrading.

  19. I changed it 30,000kms ago. But i found the oil a bit brown. The boys in blue made a big shout saying "budu ammo it should be changed every 15,000kms". I guess CVT gear oil sales are low and this is a new gimmik

Its bit funny because what the owners manual says is this,

    Continously Variable Transmission

    (CVT)

If you drive at high speed in high temperatures(35 C)or above the tranamission fluid should be changed

every 40000km or 2 years, whichever comes first.

I have no practical experiance machan so try to find a person who is using a car with a CVT gear box. He'll be able to help you.

  20. Nim, coincidence but i just saw the front door neighbour had bought himself a TATA mini lorry(no number plates even) and there is an Amaron fixed in it...Does this mean TATA comes with an Amaron from the factory itself?

PS:This is the 2nd TATA the neighbour got in.

hmmm good question bro. If this is the case that means TATA trust amoron batteries so that they use them in their brand new vehicles. This is some indication that they are good but there could be other issues too. for example they may have an agreement with amoron that they supply the batteries at the lowest price. So again the question arise whether a vehicle amnufacturer would do such a thing without assesing the quality. And the other thing is if that battery is used an india without any problems, i think it should be in here as well.

I am sure that atleast one person in Auto Lanka should have tried that battery so guys what are your ideas about it? help please....
