  1. You can drive in the UK on the SL license for up to 12 months after arrival. Use that time to brush up on passing the UK driving test and theory as it is not a cakewalk unlike in Sri Lanka. You can't use the license after 12 months and I would not push my luck on that (although I know people have in the past) as the police database and UK immigration database is now linked and they can immediately check whether you are past the 12 months. It is good to have an international license issued by the AA but not mandatory. Also if you are planning to buy a car on the SL license the insurance will be somewhat or much higher (it will anyway be high on a new UK license, although that quickly drops off if you are aged over 30). All the best.
  2. Whatever happened to uncle Sylvi and his windscreen polishing service? Anybody know?
  3. Hi all As it has been about 8 years since I first posted this, bumping it in the event any member can post the complete 'action steps' given the deteriorating situation on our roads, this could be very helpful.
  4. Properly built roads don't need to be 'maintained' year in and year out. Instead of blaming 'yahapalane' for everything, try blaming the people who built them badly in the first place.
  5. This chap apparantly has experienced it: An oldie but a goodie. The moron commenting at the end is lucky he got away with his life

  7. It surely cannot be that hard for you to just search on google? Here are two links that should answer all your queries: http://b-pro.ca/jdm-auction/ http://www.pakwheels.com/forums/vehicle-documentation-registration-import-lease/240577-jdm-vehicle-auction-sheet-how-decode
  8. This one's in HD: I find it amusing how the cars involved are similar to the Wijerama incident (a black BMW, a white BMW, a White Merc, and a Prius ) Except that it would've been me beating the shit out of the BMW driver had it been my car he hit.
  9. Caught myself wishing the same thing no sooner I had passed, but was still frothing mad at the near miss and it didn't occur to me at the time. That car's probably totaled or at the very least will never be the same again.
  10. To the morons in the white BMW (e36 I think) chasing the black BMW that almost side-swiped my car (and many others) at 100 miles an hour at the Horton place/Wijerama junc around 1.30 am before promptly braking like idiots while taking a turn, crashing into a parked prius and then ending up with a (probably condemned) car facing the wrong way in the drain - here's a big F YOU. Not only did you almost force several others off the road, crash into their cars (and get left behind by the black BMW that was either your buddy or was just being chased), you could have easily killed innocent people had you crashed into an occupied vehicle. There's a difference between having an accident (why it's called an 'accident') and deliberately behaving like idiots in a car you brats are obviously not skilled enough to handle. Good thing you'll didn't crash into that wedding Merc and ruin someone else' day as well. I echo the couple of drivers who passed by giving you guys the finger as you stood around looking a sorry sight...it's what you deserved. Oh...and next time you decide to take a turn at that speed, try not to step on the brakes at the wrong time...it just lets us know that it's a disaster waiting to happen...
  11. Never you mind...I was indicating that I have only dealt with them for commercial work (anti-shatter and solar film for office windows), not car.
  12. W*dac is not a small outfit, they are one of the oldest and most established interior companies in the country. They have been installing Llumar (established US brand) solar films for my OFFICE projects for the past 20 years. No complaints. Good service, prompt attention to any minor issues that arose during their 10 year warranty. However I have NO experience on their car tints but if the quality is the same as their commercial installations it should be good. Kleenpark used to deal in 3M products, have done a few commercial projects with them but they have had high staff turnover and their present staff is frankly rubbish...clueless with bad attitude, and I've no idea about the NDFOS product (they claim it is used in the Samsung displays but I don't see how this is relevant nor find any info on the same)...I think they messed up the 3M brand and had it removed from them and now peddling this Korean product...may be good or may be garbage, no idea. Not impressed. They claim the NDFOS product is 3M equivalent or better. I'd be a bit hard pressed to believe that.
  13. Ashroff's car does carry the CC label, have seen him step out of it a few times. He probably is consul for some country.
  14. The car is owned by Mr Ashroff Omar (Brandix). The family generally does enjoy their cars.
  15. Yes. I'll reply and admins can delete the post if not appropriate to criticize in an open forum. However, I'll consider it keeping the market informed...the company specialized for a long time in parquet and wood finish floors. Somewhere down the line they have branched off into tiles including quartz. They were awarded a job for bathroom countertops in one of my projects, along with some floor and wall tiles (perhaps about LKR 15-20mn in business). First of all, their so called "installers" are only tile salesmen who have no clue about technical matters of installation. In addition, their workmanship was very poor (probably OK by Sri Lankan standards, but not acceptable to me) and I had to several times stop the work, reject tiles (warped, cut wrong, chipped, poorly laid, debonded, etc). They also had major issues with labour (probably not unusual in specialized construction areas in SL) with work being done halfway and then stopped for days or weeks at a time as they could not find suitable replacements. The "tile salesmen" too kept dropping in and out of the company like flies, with the result that towards the end of the project (one year later) none of the original team was there and it was another nightmare to explain to them the defects that needed to be rectified. The so called impenetrable quartz also started showing all sorts of stains. Finally they brought in a chap from Italy who is apparantly a representative of the manufacturing company, who claimed they have not finished the product properly after installing (polish) and the quality of edges etc was also poor, but that was the end of it and there was no further outcome. They also demand 100% of the material cost prior to installation, as a result of which you do not have much leeway for financial penalties for poor quality work. My next step will be to contact their chairman (incidentally, according to one of the salesmen even the installations at the chairman's house have the same problem). A good example of a company trying too hard to diversify while not investing enough on training and technical upskilling of their staff. Not recommended at all.
  16. In case you're interested, there are no authorized installers for Corian in Sri Lanka at the moment. An established interior design company in Colombo 7 had the agency a couple of years back and lost it due to the mess they made of the product locally. Now Alumex (Hayleys) imports and distributes, but you will need to go with one of the freelancers who will work with the product and hopefully turn it out the way you want. There are also one or two parties who import and install a similar product to Corian (they call it the "Korean" Corian as it comes from South Korea) and do a very decent job of it (I think one of them has worked for Dupont Corian at some point), but I have no idea of the longetivity. Non-porous material such as corian or quartz (the latter freely advertised by a shop near the American Embassy who do a disastrous job at installation) are your best bet for non-staining countertops, if you can actually find someone to work it!
  17. While the media is giving the impression that these are all work of the last government, for the record some of these cars date back to the 80s/JR's era including one that was gifted to him. Most of the bulletproof vehicles were given to senior cabinet ministers in the 90s, and the black Merc from Chandrika's fleet. The last govt. too did bring in armoured cars for the forces heads and president (not ministers). I wouldn't blame any govt as it was a need for the times we lived in. Wouldnt touch any of these cars even if salveageble - the maintainance as someone else has stated hear would easily hit the seven figures on a regular basis.
  18. No I had them rotated before the alignment. However, I will swap the front two wheels and retry.
  19. If not a hydraulic puller then how would you recommend this is fixed (if in fact it is the problem)? Any locations you can recommend. MV-5: Mainly, the steering wheel does not seem "comfortable" being in the dead straight position and there is mild resistance when driving to keep it in that position; should I let it go it will lock in slightly turned left a few degrees. This is enough to end up with the car running off the lane if driven 20m or so like this. I do not recall this occurring until of late. Komi- Road camber is what I thought earlier as well. However, trying to locate a straight enough stretch that I can run the vehicle far enough to notice whether this is happening. As recommended by all of you, I will first check the brakes and wheels, then proceed to car care or any other highly recommended location for further tests. My experience thus far with the agents has been less than impressive, so really would not want to go there unless I have no choice.
  20. Hello all Vehicle: Kia Sorrento 2011 model. Vehicle tends to pull a few degrees to the left for some time now. Wheel alignment (front and rear) and balance checked and confirmed it is in order (Autodrome). Yet the problem does not seem to have gone away. No visible deformity of wheels and car has not been driven at speed through any potholes (to my knowledge). Also, the steering does not vibrate when pulling to the left, but steering just seems happier that way. Any suggestions as to what could be wrong, and where I can get this checked for further diagnosis (other than for KIA agent?)
  21. I'm guessing this must be Galle Road somewhere in the mid 1970s? I can't for the life of me figure out exactly where this is, and yet it all looks so familiar...especially those two phillips signs...any ideas? I didn't check the FB group yet.
  22. Sometimes they don't go that route Many of them cruise around unregistered with clown princes at the wheel for a few months...must be resetting the odometer or something prior to shipping out
  23. The Central Bank does not exist to issue warnings of the status of privately owned Finance Companies.
