  1. thanks to everyone for responding

    I have found below Q/A on http://www.police.lk/index.php/traffic-police/55

    "Question : 15.

I have tinted glass fitted into my vehicle. Is it a offence?

    Answer:

Use of tinted glass are appended in Government Gazette 875/08 on 16.06.1995 and Gazette Number 1273/28 on 31.01,2003. If windscreen and the two shutters besides the driver are tinted It is an a offence. However 20% tinted glass could be used only on the top portion of the windscreen"

However it doesn't tell any tint percentage for other glassess, Is this mean that it is possible 100% to back glasses ?

If you take traffic laws in sri Lanka. You can't do following as well.

    1. Putting rear seats for dual purpose vans.

    2. having more than two people in a motor bike

    3. listing to radio while driving.

    4. Putting closed lorry bodies to D*MO batta

    5. installing many fancy items to buses and three wheels.

  2. Haven't or have? I assume you mean HAVE? If so that's weird, for I thought you could run synthetic oils for about 15,000km without issues?

Haven't observe any performance drop with fully synthetic even after 8000Kms and it was after running more than 8 months.

If your car is not running more than 5000Kms in 6 months, better use normal oils. Else it;s a waste of money.

Why I use 5000KM change interval is it get your car been serviced at regular intervals than servicing it at 10,000Kms.

  3. If Owner's Manual says '0W 20', use it. It's a low viscosity engine oil good to minimize the starting friction and to increase fuel efficiency. I'm using Toyota 0W 20 oil for my Fit. No Worries, but make sure to change at intervals of 5000km or 3 months. Because it is a mineral oil!

Yes, you have to change it at 5000Km, else you will fill real decrease in engine performance. Haven't observed it even with 8000KMs of mobil fully synthetic oils.

  4. And how exactly can you ascertain whether the mileage is genuine?

Since these engines are normally used in commercial vehicles, they have average more than 100,000Kms. I am not sure how we can test the genuine mileage of an engine. Most mechanic is do is to test the sound, any oil leaks, exhaust gas.

If you directly import from Japaneese auction, there is a high chance that it has stated genuine mileage.

  5. 100,000 on the clock for imported engine is normal. It can be used another 200,000Km without any problem. 100,000Kms in Japan is like 30,000Km in Sri Lanka. It's nothing for a 2C diesel engine. If it's genuine mileage you don't feel much difference in engine with 20,000Kms and engine with 100,000Kms. That's the quality of a Japaneese engine.

  6. SLT and Dialog 4G LTE seem to be the best two options right now. I'm using the web pro package of SLT, getting full bandwidth of 8mb DL 1mb up, can't say the line is stable though, having frequent disconnections here and there, all because of the faulty equipment that is in the exchange 1km from my house.

Also, SLT has to be up there for having the worst customer service in any country. I dont know what kind of people work in the customer service, some of these women who answer to the 1212 hotline don't even know terms like "bandwidth" and "routing". Their solution to all internet problems is "sir please turn off the router, wait 30 seconds and turn it on, and call us again, suba dawasak!"

All in all, if you guys have 4G LTE coverage in your area, get it, dont ever go for SLT, who have been lying to customers over and over while providing shit service.

Your comments about customer service ladies are 100% right. Most of them even don't know how to configure a basic Dlink router. Recently I moved my house and luckily I had old setting saved in the router and by looking at it, I configured the new wireless router. After 2 days received a call from technician and I said I have already configured it myself.

When I got my new connection, I had so many issues. Most of customer services advice is to switch off, wait 10 minutes and start it again. Then I was pissed off after calling so many times and said "I have done it for entire day now, please give some solution for this". After 2 days technician came and figure out that it was a problem in the line and he corrected it by calling to regional office. (they have put low bandwidth setting which are not enough for ADSL)

  7. Best is to personally import, most of the car importers import “R” – repaired grade which sometimes have very low mileage.

If you buy directly from an auction you will have access to the auction sheet which gives a basic indication about the condition of the vehicle.

Some of R grade vehicles has better condition than 4.5 vehicle. R mean replaced, most of the R comes in side fenders, bonnet, side doors. Conditions depend on the level of accident they had. Most of them are totally replaced and same as newly built one. e.g side fenders, they will replace any inside damaged parts also

  8. 5' 2'' is not a magical number and it was calculated based on huge analysis done by Toyota. they have done a survey with more than 2 million persons and better sampling strategies.

then they have identified that "Heights of people" can be represented by a "Normal distribution" and they have calculated the "Mean" and "standard deviation" for that particular distribution.

based on that values they calculated the "Probability" that we can find a person who is not higher than 5' 2''.

    that value is 0.00985634.

    world population is 7 billion.

total number of cars manufactured (prius family) = approx 4 million

    then probability of having a Prius for a given person = 4/7000 = 0.000571

since "not higher than 5' 2'' " and having a prius is mutually exclusive,

the probability of having a Prius for a given person and that person is not higher than 5' 2'' = 0.009856 x 0.000571 = 0.000005632

this answer is closer to 0

that means Toyota will win the case.

Bro, I think you got the numbers wrong.

there are more portability of person being less than 5' 2". e.g. See China, there average height is 5' 2" for women

  9. Most sellers don't show the original JAAI certificate, they have put a photocopy inside the vehicle to you to see.

Even you get the JAAI certificate, there are no mentioning of original body conditions, you can get this only through the Auction sheet. Get the actual auction sheet URL from the seller and if the auction date is within 2-3 years, the links will be still there and you can see the original body condition, what parts was replaced etc etc.

High Mileage vehicle from Japan would look same as low mileage vehicle, even an experienced mechanic would not feel the difference driving 100,000Km driven car in Japan and 10,000Km car. The situation is different if the car is used in Sri Lanka. you can see worn out suspensions while driving.

Most commercial vehicles (buddy vans, vans, pickups, buses, lorries) are normally come with high mileages. Some are even nearing 700,000Kms. I have seen one Toyota Hiace commuter in auction recently with 697,000Kms. They are going very cheap and our buggers get them and tamper the ODO meter.

I had very bad experience with sellers and also the registered vehicles bought.

    1. Once we bought a FB15 car from reputed car seller in Peliyagoda, ODO meter was having only 29,000, We didn't drove 10,000Km at most, we had to replace CV joints, Rear wheel racer hubs which are signs of mileage close to 100,000Kms.

    2. I was a third owner of a CR42 vehicle, we bought it because we had it's previous model at our house, that was early days of choosing vehicles, went with experienced person about vehicles,he said conditions are good, so we bought it and within few days we felt very low pulling power and no body able to corrected it, Accelerating black smoke, a mechanic later said it would have done more than 200,000Kms, but that time we had only 70,000Kms in the clock. The emission test kept failing even after injector pump services which cost more than Rs. 10,000.

Now I am an owner of car bought directly through auction by myself, used more than 25,000Kms in sri Lanka, ODO meter now 55,000KMs, didn't had a slightest issue with the car, didn't even changed break pads yet, Only regular servicing.

  10. Tx friend. but i expected more frm 3rd gen :-( .

    3rd generation: Long distance 22-25

Colombo - 16 -18. Not more than that.

The advertised values are much higher than actual. You can't drive in Sri Lanka to get those. The people behind will be scolding you.

Also keep in mind that Honda Insight is mild hybrid vehicle and even without the power of the battery you can use it as a normal petrol car of 1330CC, also it feels like normal petrol car, the gear lever, dash board and everything is simpler.

Where as prius, it's fully Hybrid and totally depend on the Battery. the gear lever is a very new way and more complex. There are no S or L in the dear box. no P in gear lever, there is separate button for Parking mode. Also if you are a Short fellow less than 5'2" don't go for 3rd gen prius and you will have difficulty seeing the road. Some prius comes with adjustable seat, but some don't. Prius is more comfortable than Honda Insight.

Had used both the cars and both has pros and cons. I prefer honda Insight over Prius because it hasn't given me a single trouble, the breakpads are already 25,000Kms used in sri Lanka and gurage fellow said it is not even half used. I think the quality of the spares are better in Honda. Also had few problems with my Prius, sometime remote key was not working, had to replace some steering parts due to rattling noise.

If you are more into fuel saving guy, go for Prius.

  11. is there a big difference between insight 2009 and prius 2008 fuel consumption in a traffic ?

    Yes,

Honda Insight in Colombo traffic and short distance travel does 11-14.

Where as, Prius second gen does 14- 16 in Colombo.

For long distance, I got Insight is same as Prius.

Colombo to Anuradhapura with AC and 4 people - Honda Insight Gave 22KM/L with lot of overtaking and aggressive driving.

Prius will give the same figures.

  12. Hi Friends,

  13. Thanks for the details dpbatagoda, by any chance do you know the average cost per service at each of those service places?

I normally do my service at RTT. The prices are as follows.

    1. Servicing chargers,Rs. 2200.

This includes washing under the car (undercarriage wash), interior vacuum and cleaning, carpet wash, body wash, Oil change, Filter change, Checking oil levels, battery conditions, break pads status etc etc. This doesn't include any seat shampooing or hood shampooing. But they clean the seats, dash board and interior parts using chemicals putting to clothes.

    2. Cost for 4L Toyota OIl; Rs. 3500

    3. Cost for OIl Filter Rs. 900

    4. If you want to change air filter (I change it every 15,000Kms), it will cost around Rs. 4000.

    5. Gear Box oil change - Should be only done through agents, (not from your service station) Rs. 10,000 including oil and labor

    Keep in Mind

    1. DON'T ever let the cleaner to put high pressure water to your Engine cleaning. Currently what most palaces does is they put high pressure air to clean the engine room which is the correct way

    2. DON'T go to places where they mostly service heavy vehicles such as Lorries and busses, these guy mostly don't know new way of servicing the vehicles. Once I had bad experience with a place near Impala Kotta road (now the place is closed due to no customers). The two guys put oil to my previous car undercarriage washing and luckily nothing happened. Later I got to know that new vehicles don't need any oiling to be put under when servicing. Oiling will damage some rubber parts due to high heat and oils will collect more and more dust under the car.

    3. Stay at the place where the car is servicing. You can learn what they do.

    4. Bring the remaining oil cans to home and they can be used for your next service.

  14. 1. You can go to any reputed Service place. Auto miraj, Laughf, Auto pal, Auto Clean, RTT are few options for you to try

    1. Recommended one is 0W-20 oil which is now available with Toyota. 4L is around Rs. 3500. Or you can buy fully synthetic 0W-30 Mobil for Rs. 8000 for 5L from any oil shop around panchikawatta.

    2. Toyota Oil 5000Kms.

    Fully Synthetic 10000Kms,

    3. VIC brand is good and relatively cheaper than original parts. Buy it from reputed place. (not from a small corner shop or from broker in a road)

    4. There is Honda Parts shops everywhere in Panchikawatta. GS auto is a good shop for Toyota and Nissan. They also has Honda Parts. Sometime your service station has the same price and no need to waste your time. Check with your service station first.

  15. 1. Dont go to Naw*** cusion. It's very expensive

    2. Ask from the cushion guy about the material, The Japanese fabric last as long as your seat, other one(Chineese, Indian and Korean) fade after few months. Total waste of money

    3. When putting floor carpets, use one with dots, not the one with rows (it gets tear very quickly)

    4. When putting to seats with airbags, they cover the entire seat, and the airbag will have trouble when bursting out in case of an accident

    5. What I learnt with seat covers are never remove them to shampoo or wash, you can't put them back and you have to put new ones as most of the materials get shrink.
