  1. is the proton wira a common car....i think it is even rare than the K10. the other thing i have noted is that even 300- marutis go for about 7.5k

ok,if you have 8 lakhs as total budget then rule no one is keep aside 1 lakh for repairs as any 2nd hand car will have issues that need to be sorted so that will leave you with 7 lakhs for that price you can either buy a Maruti as some suggested or if you dont want a Maruti you can buy a Proton Wira for 750 if your lucky or go for a Ford Laser 18- series which are good cars but you wont get 15kmpl,we have a 92 model Ford Laser and best I have got on a long trip is 13.25kmpl (1200cc engine) you can also go a little bit older buy a bullet proof Toyota Corolla DX wagon in mint condition for less than 6 lakhs and they are good cars and will be easy to maintain,Nissan March K10 is ok but they are not that popular
  2. there are some good ones around Kandy and if i am not wrong it is known as the nisaasn micra in other countries. My frined had one and looks apart it was a silent ride with AC,but do not pay anything more than 6k. parts are easy to find as per my friend. he has a 15sri one which original hood railings. at 8k u can even look for nisssan HB12 ( trad sunny) or even mitsubishi mirage( wijeweera model) or lancer C12 which are also good options

  3. Well this is a good thread...but my situation is a bit wierd. I was employed permanently till 2013 Jan but work as freelancer and do earn from a range of 85k to 160k . banks a reluctant to offer me loans, even in the bank that i have my savings and showing in black and white the money i put and the existing balance.

Is this the fate of self employed people....damn i thouhgt that making money was the hardest :speechless-smiley-004:

  4. After almost 25 years of wearing glasses I switched to contact lenses last year because didn't want to look geeky anymore for obvious reasons :action-smiley-026: . I was kicking myself for not switching earlier.

A few years ago I also looked into Lasik, but wasn't too comfortable about the side effects of dry eyes that may occur after the procedure. Contact lenses are less intrusive, and for someone like me who bothered with glasses for most my life I was very happy just getting contacts.

I use the two week disposable lenses and follow the cleaning procedure religiously. Took me a while to get used to sticking a foreign object in my eye but after only 6 months of wear it's like second nature.

I have noticed that the lens in fact does have a small 'crack' by design, Is that what you're talking about?

no....think of a pizza cut into eight triangles and that one trainge is torn on one border were it shakes in the eye. it is a defect....i am sure of that

  5. LAsik is good if you have a big correction. Contacts have the cosmetic benefit of not having to use glasses, but they carry some risks too. It might be some debris like lint stuck on the lens. A crack itself will damage your cornea. Do not wear them now. Like Rumesh said better you take this up with the people you bought it from. And generally with things like this don't skimp on quality. Try vision care. Theyre the best

Komi I know....but even these fellows are good that is what i came to know. As u say must never wear it so that the cornea gets damaged.( damn)

What do you know about laser treatment can it be done for anyone....like OP has said.

  6. Friends,

I have a question for all the people who have been using contact lenses for some time now. Well after nearly almost 25 years of wearing spectacles I finally decided to shift into contacts, inspired by my sister using it for like 4 years now.

I went to a popular place in ward place which starts with the word Techno........ this happened on 29/5 may and I got myself a pair of brown soft permanent contact lenses. learnt to use it right there under the advise of the optometrist and came home a happy man. i used the lenses as prescribed washing my hands, and keeping it in fluid and changing the fluid as told. to be frank since i am on the initial stages i would only wear them for about 3 days a week . However last Tuesday after wearing them on i noticed that my right lense has cracked. the lense itself is liked a polythene and has cracked and does not stay like it should in the eyes.

    Why did this happen?

Has this happened to anyone before( no one including my sister can explain because this has not happened to any one we know so far)

to be frank I am a bit baffled since i used it quite carefully, is it because of low quality work?

Need to know the scenario before i go to speak to them

I guess i should have sticked to my good old pair of spectacles instead of wasting 15k on this

    Thanks

    Rameez

  7. I do not need him to see this or read this, this is as a respect to a gentlemen who helped me and saved my money. I have read on good of other people in so many places and it brings me happiness even I do not know about them. Hope you can also be happy same way!

hey virtue .....by the way what was the cost of the paint job. I have spoken to him and i recall him telling about a painter at his place.

Yes he is a nice gentlemen and once helped me as well by sending a bass he had known for sometime to my house.

tends to have a great history though and we should get used to it :D :D

  8. Hey don, is sisira's nickname chuti by any chance? At the exact name location, I got some work done by a guy called chuti. Was okwith the work.

My trusted mechanic for any japanese car repairs is saman. His garage is in vihara lane wellawatta. 0712299000 He will alwys try to save money for u by getting cheap parts. Thats my only worry:-) His charges are very reasonable.

Another mehanic I recommend is, Pushpakumara @ nedimala junction.

crosswind....nedimala where? can you please be a bit more specific. Is he good with oldies?

  9. And I will start by sharing information about a mechanic who has been my family's primary mechanic since 1996. His name is Sisira and he mostly works by himself in a little garage in a Pepiliyana road (just after the bridge on the right if you are travelling from Gansaba junction).

He's good for all forms of mechanical repairs in petrol and diesel vehicles (engine repairs, brakes, suspension etc) but not so good at diagnosing electronic issues (ECU, sensors, check engine lights etc) as he is old school and does not have a scanner etc.

He is also not good for automatic transmissions.

You also have to tell him the quality of part you want replaced, and better yet buy him the goods yourself, as if you let him buy parts, sometimes he will try to save you money (all good intentions) and buy cheaper parts.

But he has never scammed us by inflating the price of parts he has bought on our behalf, which I think is fundamental, as most other guys I've been to have pulled that scam on me.

But the most important thing is this. In all this time, I've not had a single item stolen, swapped, broken by him in our family cars, and he has gone out of his way to get our cars started at home. So we have no hesitation of leaving our cars there, and we rarely have had to take them back (like all there has been a few mistakes, but sorted out quickly enough).

His charges are also very reasonable, and I often overpay since I think what he asks is too low.

    Don,

Is he the mechanic soon after the SALA enterprises showroom? to be frank there are about 4 garages in pepiliyana , I would like to show my old lancer to him,

If posssible can you please PM me the description of the guy.

  10. guys thought of starting a thread about the top 5 things you would do when your car decides to stall.... My friend who was in aussie said that when they buy a car there is a payment to be made to an oraganisation( similar to AA in sri Lanka) on an annual basis so that if your car stops they will come to the rescuse anywhere in australia. Since over here this is not the practise generally what are the top 5 things you would do.

  11. This is the four square light model? Congrats on your first car! And what's more it's got the engine in the front, gearbox on the middle and drivetrain in the rear. Recipe for tons of fun of you ask me.

    1. Looks like you need a carb tuneup. See if it can be fixed first, if not consider replacement.

    2. To address the rust near the windscreen properly you'll have to remove it and tinker. There is arise of breaking the glass but it's a fairly common car you should be able to find a replacement if so there's no point tinkering without removing the glass. A good tinkering/paint might set you back around 150,000. But if done well the car will hold for at least 5-6 years.

    3. The rack too might be fixable by servicing the rack end bushes/whatnots. Replace as worst case scenario.

Where do you live? I'd recommend my mechanic Indika because he has 2 of these cars and two daihatsu charmant (same car, no? Like the terios/rush?) which he has restored to brilliant condition. The Carina's are diesel converts tho. But they all run like dimes. He's in Kolonnawa. PM me if you want his number.

Komi is this car a rear wheel drive or front wheel drive?.....

  12. Now now Guys I think silvi is ROFL.....even now :sport-smiley-004: . I think he is taking all of us for a good ride.!!! and pretending that he cannot understand

Silvi come on....dont tell me that you guys did not flirt during the bellbottom and heavy side Balm era :sport-smiley-003:

Silvi on a serious note what i meant was that we will be screwed during the budget after the colossal expenditure taken into account. Please let us not forget that apart from the highways...this will not result in any money generating activities at least in the immediate short run..the end result is a very tight cash budget ...with desperate signs like mobile phone tax, death tax,air pollution tax.....etc.

  13. seeing all this chain sprocket issues.............makes me attracted to the scooters in sri lanka.

I was having a chat the other day about a scooter called SYM from thaiwan at the auto exhibition and he told me that scooter sales are really picking up.
