  1. Just like our banana republic with organic fertilizer, Ethiopia has become the first country to ban ICE vehicles. The reason just like in us they have a huge Foreign exchange deficit and fuel is very expensive. How will it work out without no infrastructure in place? They claim they get 97% of electricity from renewable methods.

If I am not mistaken, Ethiopia produces A LOT of its energy from waste and biogases...so the whole 97% generation thing is quite true. However, like you said the problem is reach...I believe only a small % of the population actually have access to electricity (50% or so). Partly due to infrastructure spread and partly due to economic reasons.
Now considering that almost every car you see on the road are ICE cars, in the city and in the villages, I wonder how this is going to work. Heck there are many villages where people don't have electricity but do have some sort of run down car to get them to the nearest market/city/etc....

Thing is iRage, this stinks like the recent fertilizer ban by you know who. People dont think on the long term, if countries like the US, UK and even China cannot cope with the charging requirements with the existing infrastructure how can a country like Sri Lanka or Ethiopia overcome these challenges? The so called experts have so many stories to say about EV. I presume you didnt see the FB live of a so called EV expert in Sri Lanka after the carsguide Australia testing of an EV vs ICE (same make and model) where the EV was more expensive.

Oh yeah...I agree with the fact that this sounds completely stupid as a large percentage of the population simply cannot run without petrol. Outside of Addis it is going to be a huge issue. Especially in the farming/industrial regions.
The very few rich people will be able to run EVs and that is about it. Heck...the government it self..they have  HUGE fleet of the usual cars...are they going to replace all of that ?

They do create most of their electricity using renewal sources...and they did have a sensible electrification plan which involved changing over to electric and hydrogen busses and other public transport systems. They even piloted EV busses and offered commuters free transport as well. Sad to hear that the government took such a drastic step as this is going to derail whatever chances their "original" EV strategy had.

  2. Looks like you found it. You want to go ahead or let someone search for the glorious Group B era and come to the answer? I am a bit confused on the car as apparently they didnt have a specific make on the car, could be the reason for the badges and also no badge on steering wheel. The car looks original though.
  3. Ok then here we go guys, available in Sri Lanka and there is one for sale on the net. Two hints - This car belongs to a group of automobile companies and the predecessor to the one in subject ran in the famous Group B era of WRC. A small detail, the car in the advertisement is a bit confused by its brand identity where it has the front badges from the correct make and rear with badges from Skoda
  4. Austin A40 Devon Pick Up. Thats the closest I get to the side wheel arch and the door liner.
  5. Lewis Hamilton broke the internet last night! What a story, what a change.

True, hope he fares better with the idiotic strategy team (Copy we are checking). But then Redbull went even further with the Horner drama and they say Newey will leave to Ferrari if Horner leaves.

Seriously...what happened to F1 ? These days it seems to have more drama than a Mexican day time soap and a focus on racing lesser than a teenage boy's focus trying to do homework at an all female yoga studio.

And the season has still not started

  6. You learn something new everyday. The Hyabusa is actually the peregrine falcon. Read a bit about it and see why it was named as such.
  7. Well no, since you tried I will give one small clue the subject car has a name synonymous with Hayabusa.
  8. Lets leave it to someone to crack it, if they dont by tomorrow morning I will give the answer.
  9. Big Aussie made car from a US automaker.
  10. Jeep Commander it is Think it was built to take on the Hummer limited production run. Few of them in the country. Over to you sir
  11. Your on the right track, and it is referred as a truck by them 'mericans. And a big one at that.
  12. Well I just wanted to put @matroska on the correct path. Oh well lets see how this goes, I am including just one part of a vehicle and if you need any clues just ask. Yes this is available in Sri Lanka
  13. A later version did a lap of the Nurburgring under 10 minutes at the capable hands of a late lady driver.
  14. Now that my friend is a name 🤣, I think most Chinese have names likes this. Heck even BYD is short for Build Your Dreams. Should search for the longest name for a car, obviously the Chinese will come up top (was there a thread for vehicle names in the good old days? I remember talking about the naked car etc). Out of jokes certain Chinese products are made by different different parties and available on Ali Baba as different makes and models confusing us.
  15. We could include, but as you said sufficient clues will need to be given. I still think there is a lot of cars in the country that we can use for trivia, its just about finding the correct angle of the car to include in trivia.
  16. Ok first thing first, do not expect 15kmpl from either of those vehicles, best around 8kmpl and worse case around 5kmpl. Since these are not vehicles found easily in the market I would say it wont be the easiest to find parts. Between the Santa Fe and the Grand Vitara I will lean more towards the Grand Vitara but you are looking at a 2 door vs a 4 door. Maybe you could also look at a Toyota Carina, or something like a Tucson / Sportage as well.
  17. +1 on the Kelissa and the Alto 650. Kenari? Have you seen the thing? Cruze - A good vehicle with ground clearance and with the biggest engine, wont be helped by fuel economy. Also you may consider the Suzuki version of it Ignis/Swift.
  18. Thats a mix and match from everywhere. What exactly is your requirement? Daily drive? First vehicle? Typical mileage you do per month, plus fuel consumption you are looking at.
  19. You are comparing two different models here. You an never compare a A3 with a BMW 3, you compare a BMW 3 with a A4. What would your budget be like and do you have a preference for year of manufacture?
  20. In this instance you do not have to worry as the condition is deleted.
  21. Hi @Davy after a long time I'm seeing an old timer, yes this would be a Laurel (C230). Take the floor sir.
  22. This one shouldnt be hard for you guys.
  23. Another failed attempt at marketing a Chinese mass produced car as assembled in Sri Lanka. This vehicle was sold in a market as made in USA and were found out by the public. Has various names in different countries. Rinco Aria, Yitai Motors YTEV08007, Volt City EV
  24. Did a camping tour to Hulangala on Sunday, its amazing how far the small Alto will take you where some so called SUV's bottom out.

I think I have got the forum members to discover Sri Lanka more with my status update. Have fun guys, just dont leave polythene and your beer cans up there bring back what you take and lets save the environment. Ideal if you guys could camp out there its a nice experience with the howling winds and constant fear of the tent being ripped apart. The name Hulan Gala doesnt dissappoint.

  25. By all means take the floor.
