  1. Dear Autolankans, Thanks for reading my post. There are myriad of options when it comes to e bikes. There are dedicated electric bikes then there are e-bike conversion kits. Lets say if I converted my mountain bike by adding a motor and a battery pack, what will be the legal aspects that I need to look into? should I register it? Conversion kits typically come with 250W or 350W motors and battery packs with 8-10 Ah.
  2. Found this article online. Posting for the benefit of everyone: https://www.rte.ie/lifestyle/motors/2017/0603/880092-warning-about-regulation-of-pcps/
  3. Thanks for reading my post. Lately I have heard of this new financing method (new for me, and for SL, since I have not heard of such offer In the past) called PCP (Personal Contract Plans). Apparently it is a sort of paying a down payment for a car, and then paying monthly rental. But the ownership will not transfer to you until you pay the balance amount at the end of your contract. The details are kind of sketchy, and I'm on the look out for more details. If you know or already got an agreement, or you have had one in the past can you share the pros and cons you see in getting into a PCP?
  4. Thought of reviving this old thread. My existing tires needs a replacement soon and I was searching for a tire set. I was checking for 31x10.5 R15 tires and got a quote today for some Thai brand called 'Federal' or something. They were quoting 27k a tire. Have the tire prices gone up that much? I was wondering how much the popular brands of ATs would be.
  5. Thanks for reading my question. One of my buddies had fixed an Armadillo bumper to his jeep. I was wondering about the legal aspects of such a mod. I have seen quite a lot of 4x4 Jeeps with these and it seems that the authorities are OK with these (still they chase bull bars). Is it because; since these are buffers, and quite a lot of older models of jeeps/trucks came with metal bumpers does the law leave provision for them? Will they create problems in case of an accident?
  6. Sorry for the delay. I missed this thread. Wow... Kudos! It is indeed a Daihatsu Rocky.
  7. Yet another 'hisaradeta amuda gahilla'. If they straighten up the public transportation system, they need not implement anything. No-one likes to drive in Colombo traffic. If the public transportation is good, most people will opt to use it instead of driving. The problem is that most of the private bus owners are politicians. And they don't want to change. They just want to milk every nut and bolt!
  8. Never trust J***a***thi. I have really really bad experience with them. Better to not insure and save that money in a savings account than to insure with them!
  9. There was a permit system (Blue Permit or something?) which allowed the foreign workers to import 5 to 10 year old vehicles once every 5 years. Then it was cut down to once in a lifetime. And then I lost track of the legislation...
  10. I stand corrected. Yes there seems to be a concession of 25% for Tax payers who contribute at least 250K for either 5 or 10 consecutive years. Application form from IR has more details: http://www.ird.gov.lk/en/publications/Unit%20Profiles_Tax%20Payer%20Service%20Unit/Form_App_Vehicle_Permit.pdf But how does that measure against someone in the government getting permits of much higher percentages, without paying any tax? P.S. I' not against any hard working government servant getting a permit. But it is unfair to leave out those who basically pull the weight of the economy. The latest development is: http://www.ft.lk/article/475349/CMTA-urges-Finance-Ministry-to-reconsider-issuance-of-vehicle-import-permits-to-taxpayers
  11. Have no experience with a swap. But I know that the 4D56 is a solidly built engine. Try to get a 4D56T if you think the vehicle can handle the extra 'ump'. Except for relatively quick belt wear (probably due to the weight they pull), there are no complaints.
  12. I don't think it would work that way. The proper approach would be to make a conducive environment to retain the professionals in the country. But, in order to do that we should have rulers who understand the value of knowledge and knowledge workers which Kudu, kasippu mudalali and common thugs do not! In the end, people should be blamed for sending them to the parliament!
  13. Yep! Agree... err... Haven't I said that myself already...
  14. ' Welcome to SL politics! In case you have never heard before, 'This is a Land Like No Other!'
  15. No, the allegations are not 'malicious'. They are with ground. The problem is stigmatizing every sector alike. There are sectors in government service, despite being severely resource constricted, performing the best they could being quite effective (i.e. - hospitals, armed forces). But then again... there are sectors that don't. They earn a bad rapport for everyone.
  16. The system is a collapsed one. There is nothing to collapse even further.
  17. I personally believe that the doctors in SL are seriously underpaid. At the end of the day, even doctors have to 'pay their bills'. And I never blame a doctor for curbing the gap with private practice.
  18. Yes Crosswind nailed it! Permits should be tied to a time window when our foreign reserves are healthy. That's how it has been... until this budget at least! Just to add my two cents, difficult as it may be, there should be some measure of 'contribution to the economy/country' when allocating rewards like permits. Blanket assignment of permits will never motivate any party. In fact it would demotivate, except that the reward is essential to the profession. (i.e. - A car for the doctor is a must as doctors are summoned 24/7 to the hospital based on the need, heck they should allocate a driver too if possible, Concessions for computers and equipment for IT people, etc.)
  19. Nope. None of the tax payers get/got the permits. Its only the non-tax paying government workers who got the tax exemption on vehicles. The tax-payers had/have to pay tax when they import vehicles.
  20. May I, This is a really easy one, so made the image smaller...
  21. Apparently the owner is contemplating on 'To have the front grille or not' And to include a turbocharger and an inter-cooler... and...
