  3. @matroska I don't think the whole owning a car mindset can ever be shaken off Sri Lankan mindset. I've seen migrated Sri Lankans having like 3-4 cars in one family rather than using the much better public transportation available over there. The majority of Sri Lankans start with the dream of owning your own car with the first job you get into. Then once you get the money you'd think of getting your wife a car to take the kids around, then buy the first car for your kid when he turns 18 etc etc.. My dad had it & I might do it even albeit a bit differently. Actually there's nothing wrong with that mindset as it drives you to work hard, be happy when you've accomplished it, have some pride showing it off etc etc. Heck just look around & see the number of car owning clubs this country has. People do take pride in owning vehicles here & as long as they do it responsibly I'd say it shouldn't bother anybody. Asking people not to buy cars because you can't put your own car to the road is the kind of privileged thinking we need to get rid of in this country. No wonder the majority is thinking like this as it is the same sentiment echoed by some of our appointed leaders in public. The funny thing is until you buy your car this same group of people are on the other side but as soon as they've got theirs they put down everyone else who comes after! Rather than discuss why so many cars are on the road, what we should discuss is why there's so much traffic. The most visible or surface level cause people assign blame is importation of too many cars. Rather if you dig deep the real root cause is majority of daily commuters to city centers start driving themselves to work. This puts more cars on the road during specific time slots of the day. If we can reduce this & remove reasons for people to flock to certain places we could easily control this. Just putting more buses with A/C etc & asking people to leave their cars is not going to solve the issue also. Whats needed rather is higher capacity networks such as trains, subways, trams etc developed having access to larger # of areas in a city. Problem doing that in a city like colombo is the existing infrastructure is so unplanned any development activity will have to shoulder huge costs in terms of reclamation, demolition, alternate route development etc. The more feasible option for an economy such as ours is to do things like, Move/Spread out high traffic operations outside of city limits -> Already some good work happened in the past like fish market moving out/establishing sethsiripaya/sowsiripaya (gov offices)/plans to move out manning market etc. Need to analyze data on spread of people coming in for work in major cities & continue these kind of improvement work. Planned cities in developed countries have separate business districts/shopping districts/recreational districts etc. with dedicated transport modes/routes. Manage Access time to the city -> Welcome change in this regard by moving school start time to 7:30am. Need to do more by segregating businesses & have staggered start times. Can banks or groceries etc.. start at a different time slot? Or even government can encourage work-from-home for applicable industries by giving tax benefits to employers who clock more such hours. Create more shared work spaces with video conferencing, remote access facilities etc at strategic locations for companies to bring in people only when needed. More Frequent Shuttle Services with Multiple routes in the city -> The rise of U*er/P*ckM* service increase the number of small cars, three wheelers etc doing their runarounds in the city. It is a known fact that majority of small car owners & three wheel driver travel daily to city center like colombo etc as they have much more business than the suburbs they come from sometimes 30-40 kms away. Rather if the government had a proper shuttle kind of bus service available every 5-10 mins with min cost with right facilities (A/C, wifi etc) 15 cars driving 15 people can be replaced by one bus. With the right technology & teams behind to manage these buses can have arrival/departure times visible for commuters accessible on their smart phone/displays on bus halts etc. One huge attraction for buying these small cars for people nowadays is the good money they make by running it on these services part time. I may not be favoured by many for saying this but the unless controlled this will skyrocket into something else. Already this companies are making big money & more parties are showing interest to enter the market. Meaning more people who ideally keeping their cars on the road are insentivized to drive them to work All in all if the right thinking & leadership is present we can change the situation drastically by thinking on the above lines. If at least one person of influence read this & step up to make a change we all can enjoy a much better lanka. I'm a full on proponent of car ownership & only advocate the proper management of the system which ensures that right for generations to come.

  4. chinese parts are better "tropicalised" because they are from China? 1.Mainland China is not more "Tropical" than Inglostadt or Gottenburg 2.Although the Chinese multi-nationals are manufacturing, the mother companies are from West 3.Even it was a 100% Chinese supplier, the Temperature/Test specifications are given by the Car companies in the West One example is Chinese Manufacturer Geely entering the EU market Through the acquisition of Volvo, but that has not made Volvos sold in EU more "Tropicalised" acc.to your Logic. But the truth is everyone wants to save costs these days,so unless a vehicle is developed for a Hot-climate market like middle east, they like to keep the Engineering costs minimum by reducing the HW and SW variants.

  5. Yes Using the word "aids" at the wrong place can give a whole different meaning Whilst "aids" is an accepted plural form of "aid" in modern English; in the world of "development aid" we like to keep the plural of "development aid" <or any reference to such> as development aid <as usage of the term aids can be quite confusing >

  6. There's nothing called a 'reliable place'. Even the agents sometimes repaint and sell vehicles which were damaged during shipment. and famous car sale owners have time and again sold cut and bud vehicles. It all depends on your luck and how you inspect the vehicle.

  7. Yeah i used the improved design one because the old ones are no longer available to buy. and you cannot fix the new rings to the old piston since the design flaw so you literally have to get all 4 pistons and rings with the new design. and you have to use the right tools to fix the ring to the piston and install the piston into the cylinders, this guy is not a maka bass so he has all the tools and does it perfectly. if it was someone else i am sure he would have used a mitiya and taken the piston pin out and installed the new piston to the rod but he wanted it to be perfectly fitted and wanted me to personally go to D*MO engineering and get it done. I have gone around 500km so far and will keep the forum updated. i feel the smooth acceleration since they are new piston and also he suggested to change the oil to 10 w30 after 20k.

  8. Hi Guys, I've been thinking of getting my Jeep tinted before the warm season hits in a couple of months. The cheap stuff can be done up for next to nothing but I want to get the good stuff. The Local agents here charge quite a bit of money and I don't get to know the exact grade of the product they are using for the job so I'm weighing two other options. 1. Buy online - Where I can pick the grade of the film I'm buying (1 ply or 2 ply, dyed or Nano tech, heat rejection levels etc etc) 2. Buy from the Sri Lankan agent while on holiday next month. Does anyone know whether 3M Sri Lanka sell just the tint film? Do you happen to know an approximate price per meter or a roll of a particular size? Would appreciate your info! Thanks!

  9. Heya TDMax, firstly let me start off with the disclaimer that I'm no expert in identifying odd noises coming from peoples rear ends!!!! However, this could be several things in my rather shallow knowledge. Rear-end noises (If you'll pardon the expression) coming 'from the wheel' could be: 1) The brakes. Remove rotor and check e-brake shoe. 2) The tyres. A hum when in motion could also be worn tyres. Check that. 3) Is the car RWD? Probably not, so we'll forget the rear differential. 4) Could it be the suspension? Get the struts, strut mounts, springs checked. The rear lower arms. 5) Grab hold of your exhaust tip and yank it up and down a bit (again no double meanings intended) as the noise could be an unstable exhaust mounting. Ok thats all I can think of right now, will post any more ideas if they come to me. Please post what it was when you discover.

  10. Hi, DONT BUY MICRO BAIC X25!!!! im an owner of Micro x25 and my advice is don’t even think of buying the x25 or any vehicle from Micro!!! a) The sales staff lied to us (first batch ) when we bought the x25 saying it’s a ‘special price 42.5/- and the price will increase after the sale of 60 units. But they went and did the exact opposite by reducing the price by further 250,000/- !!! This ruined the chances of selling the vehicle in the secondary market for reasonable price (given the fact that Micro vehicle does not have decent a re sale value ) b )when we tried to address the issue to the company they gave vague explanations. Worse the rouge sales staff who sold us saying the price will be increased shortly did not even answer the call!!! Called them so many times.... D )cheap quality seats and fabric - (the new Maruti have better quality seats ) seats are the only thing Micro manufactured in SL for Baic and it’s really SHIT!!!! C ) pick up is extremely poor for a 1500cc, d ) fuel consumption is not good e ) the wheel disk was rusted and got it painted (free of charge ) f ) extremely poor quality car mats g ) they stopped the trade in for the X25 at thalahena Micro trade in show room . The guys won’t even answer your call!! We feel that we got caught to this. We had to wait 4 months to get our vehicles some of us ended up paying the first month lease without even getting the vehicle to the hand. We ordinary Srilankans not only have to carry the burden of paying hefty tax for vehicles , but also to get fooled and played out by our own company is really disgraceful.
