The 49cc motorcycles becoming a real menace for all highway users and an increasing headache for the cops as the existing road rules are preventing moped users being punished or penalised ,allowing 49ccers become dare devils on highways.

Cops are forced to put a blind eye on the road rule violating 49cc ers due to loop holes of our own laws.

I strongly belive that local authorities must take quick and serious steps to protect lives of 49cc moped users and of others before this become a real social disturbance.

I agree. Some time ago we came across a whole bunch of them trying to race each other down Galle road one evening. It was sorta funny to see them lying flat on the bikes to lower wind resistance. But the thing was, they must have been doing about 50, and swerving all over the road to avoid pot holes. I doubt those things have much in the way of suspension to absorb a pothole at that speed. Since my father was driving, I put my window down and yelled at one them. Bugger got the shock of his life, tho he didn't slow down much. Musta been about 15. Stupid buggers.

i know... and half the people riding these are under 18... and some even in school uniforms....

honestly WHY cant the police stop them.. ok, if hty are riding those bikes with the foot-pedal its ok.. but theya re running on the engine, i'm sure they'll need a mtorctycle lisence for it...

i guess the bike u guys are talkin about is the one which is not licensed and got both pedal n engine ryte...

Well the fact is , SL rules permits mopeds or motorcycles under and including 49cc engine capacity to run without registration,helmets,insurence ,riding licence ,where as even bicycles need registration in SL.A stupid system of law heh?

Very True Miniace. Our Goverment stupidly limits fast bikes but dont put a regulation for Moped users to wear protective gear and they should start registering these bikes because if they come and knock you and run off, there is no way to catch them, I have had very near misses with mopeds and if a life is lost its very sad. I for my self know on Katunyake road how many moped riders have got killed and how much damage they have caused to cars.

Yes machan, these laws are Ridiculous, if you ride a TVS champ you don't need anything including a helmet cos it is only 49cc, but if you ride a Honda chaly 50, Honda Super cup 50 or Yamaha mate 50 you have to have everything. Even if its 49cc, I've seen some doing more than 50km/h on them, dangerous.

Now there are lots of variety, some are quiet bigger than TVS champ and without pedals as well. ie: TVS XL thing.

exactly....why the concerned authorities and traffic police are late and reluctant to talk about this increasing menace.

I have seen a few wearing helmets for their protection and rest gamble with their lives.

I've got one, but not in Colombo, hits about 40kmph, but starting it is a pain, coz you have to pedal it till it starts... fun to ride....

Machan, you can put it in doublestand and start using the pedal as a kicker, I'm seeing my next door uncle starting his Champ every morning using this technique, he starts with just one kick though..

So did I. I agree. Was a little thinner back then coz a 2k bike ride is a good workout. Until it rains.

HEHEHE!!

true....

i did like 10k a day on the bie when i was doing ALs... even now its the fastest way to get to Kolpity in the morning rush, from my place (Col.5)

Bus=40-50 mins

Car=20 mins

Bike=15-20 mins (denpending on the effort you're willing to put in.. but a normal ride is 20 mins)

:D

though i'm sure a Moped probably might do it faster..even if it doesnt have the advantage of being able to go on pavements or run redlights..:huh:

well people always like to bend the rules. same scenario in car taxing, cars upto 1499cc taxed under a different category n cars over 1500cc is taxed as luxury.

but i think the riders should be more conscious about their safety and wear a helmet. same applies to seatbelts in cars.

Hey i need to get 1 49cc bike any suggestion of a gud 1

And the 1st modification will be installing a new silencer plus an autolanka stickerr :action-smiley-060:

Go for TVS XL, it is better than TVS champ it seems, also XL is quiet bigger than the Champ and it hasn't got the push pedals. Also it has a nice beat silenser as well.. :D
